Perfluorocarbon liquid in the management of retinal detachment with proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

PURPOSE: To describe the techniques and results of perfluoro-N-octane used during vitrectomy for managing retinal detachment with severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). METHODS: The authors retrospectively studied 223 consecutive patients who underwent vitreoretinal surgery for severe PVR (93% D1-D3). Patients underwent an average of 1.72 prior vitreoretinal surgeries. Perfluoro-N-octane was used intraoperatively to flatten the retina, avoiding posterior drainage retinotomy, to identify areas of residual retinal traction and periretinal membranes, to stabilize the peripheral retina dur

High-Resolution Ex-Vivo Imaging of Retina with a Laptop-Based Portable Endoscope.

PURPOSE: Ophthalmic endoscopy is useful in vitreoretinal surgery with opaque anterior segments or anatomically challenging structures. However, standard ophthalmic endoscopy devices are usually large and costly. Thus, the development of a portable endoscope is necessary. METHODS: The portable endoscope consisted of a probe, an illumination system, a high-resolution camera module, and a universal serial bus (USB). It was connected to a laptop and applied for intraocular imaging of porcine eyes in vitro. Basic parameters and pictures of the same tissue target were compared with those of the sta

Development of a core outcome set for patients with epiretinal membranes: a Delphi consensus study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) can affect vision in complex ways, requiring assessment beyond visual acuity. We developed a core outcome set (COS) for patients undergoing surgery for macular pucker secondary to iERMs for use in both clinical practice and clinical trials. METHODS: An online modified Delphi technique was used, incorporating literature review, stakeholder workshops and two-round Delphi survey, each followed by a hybrid consensus meeting. Stakeholders, including health professionals and patients rated the importance of each outcome on a 9-point Likert scal

Silicone Oil Into the Suprachoroidal Space: An Illustrative Report and Literature Review.

Silicone oil (SO) tamponade has been widely used in vitreoretinal surgery for complex retinal detachment cases, yet its migration into unintended intraocular spaces remains an uncommon but clinically significant complication. While sub-retinal and anterior chamber migration have been more frequently described, suprachoroidal SO migration is a rare event, with few reports in the literature. The underlying mechanisms proposed for this complication include transient hypotony, infusion cannula malposition, and structural vulnerabilities within the suprachoroidal space. This review synthesizes repo

[Ocular malformation and paediatric retinal detachment].

A range of posterior segment abnormalities, especially anomalies of the optic papilla, coloboma, and persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous are associated with the high risk to develop a retinal detachment. Most of these retinal detachments develop in the first and second decade of life. In most cases of retinal detachment caused by malformations, vitreoretinal surgery is indicated. Results of surgery depend on the nature of malformations. In spite of an anatomic re-attachment of the retina, in some eyes the functional results are limited. Especially in cases of severe PHPV, the aim of vitre

Outcomes of Vitreoretinal Complications Requiring Operation after Abusive Head Trauma.

Abusive head trauma (AHT) can result in retinal complications that require operative intervention. There is no review evaluating the outcomes of vitreoretinal operations in aggregate or on the timing of vitreoretinal intervention. This systematic review aims to fill this knowledge gap. A literature search between 2011 and 2021 was performed with PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. Included articles described outcomes of vitreoretinal operations after AHT either in aggregate or as individual cases. Nine articles met criteria; the direct outcomes of operations were collected to minimize bias. Vi

Managing vitreoretinal complications in uveal melanoma: Surgical treatment and practical considerations.

BACKGROUND: In the past few decades, the primary management for uveal melanoma has evolved from enucleation to eye-preserving treatments. However, despite achieving a high rate of local tumour control, complications following eye-preserving treatments still occur and are partly responsible for functional loss and secondary enucleation. METHODS: A literature review by a broad international panel. RESULTS: We summarised the current literature on utilizing vitreoretinal (VR) surgery for managing the complications of uveal melanoma. We also provided insights from the authors' personal experience

Choroidal vascularity index changes in different treatments for vitreomacular traction.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to examine if choroidal vascularity index (CVI) is different in eyes with unilateral vitreomacular traction (VMT) from their healthy fellow eyes; and whether different treatments affect the CVI. METHODS: The baseline and 8-week post treatment CVIs of 56 unilateral VMT patients that underwent spontaneous resolution (n = 30), vitreoretinal surgery (n = 16) or pneumatic vitreolysis (n = 10) were compared with fellow eyes using paired samples t-test. Partial correlation analyses correcting age and gender was used for calculations between treatment groups. P

Autologous retinal transplant for macular hole in retinal detachment following bag-intraocular lens complex dislocation.

Retinal detachment (RD) associated with a macular hole (MH) in a previously vitrectomised eye represents one of the most challenging scenarios in vitreoretinal surgery. We report a case of an elderly patient in their late 80s who developed total RD with a concomitant MH following pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for a dislocated capsular bag-intraocular lens complex. Management included the use of autologous retinal transplantation (ART). Complete retinal reattachment and closure of the MH were achieved. This case illustrates the importance of active posterior segment surveillance after complex vit
