Lung Adenocarcinoma Metastasis to the Vocal Cord.

Metastases to the vocal cord from a distant organ are extremely rare. This case showed metastatic adenocarcinoma on the vocal cord of lung origin in a 75-year-old nonsmoking female with a history of lung adenocarcinoma surgery 2 years earlier. The vocal cord mass was surgically removed, and the biopsy confirmed metastatic adenocarcinoma of lung origin with thyroid transcription factor (TTF)-1 positivity. A further evaluation found recurrence in the lung. The patient received gefitinib. Here, we report an extremely rare case of metastatic adenocarcinoma on the vocal cord from the lung which is

Chondrometaplasia of the vocal cord in an adult male.

INTRODUCTION: (Chondrometaplasia of the larynx is a rare disease. We report a case that presented at the otolaryngology department in our institute in 2015.) PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 62year old man without any history of trauma presented with progressive dysphonia, dyspnoea, without any dysphagia. A fibreoptic laryngoscopic examination revealed nodular mass arising at the junction of anterior 1/3rd and posterior 2/3rd of left vocal cord. DISCUSSION: A computed tomography scan of the neck region showed a rounded and circumscribed mass without infiltration of the surrounding tissues. Histologica

Vocal cord paralysis caused by stingray.

Foreign bodies in the oral cavity and pharynx are commonly encountered in the emergency room and outpatient departments, and the most frequently observed of these foreign bodies are fish bones. Among the possible complications resulting from a pharyngeal foreign body, vocal cord fixation is extremely rare, with only three cases previously reported in the English literature. The mechanisms of vocal cord fixation can be classified into mechanical articular fixation, direct injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, or recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis secondary to inflammation. The case discusse

Diagnosing and treating vocal cord dysfunction.

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is a respiratory disease in which the vocal cords close during breathing. It is often associated with acute signs and symptoms of upper airway obstruction, and is commonly mistaken for asthma. A lack of knowledge of the condition and limited research can make VCD hard to manage. This article discusses the causes and signs and symptoms of VCD, and how to diagnose and treat the condition. It also explores staff awareness of VCD, and how specialist multidisciplinary clinics dedicated to treating the condition can improve care in complex breathless management.

[Treatment of unilateral vocal cord paralysis].

Unilateral vocal cord paralysis refers to the immobility or limitation of mobility of a vocal cord due to neural injury. Neural injury is most commonly caused by surgical trauma or a malignant tumor. Hoarseness with various degrees is the main symptom. The typical finding is a vocal cord remaining in a laterally immobile position on the side of injury in mirror examination, when the patient is asked to produce a voice. Establishing the etiology of the paralysis often requires imaging studies in order to exclude a tumor. Treatment consists of voice therapy and, in severe cases, voice surgery.

Vocal cord dysfunction without end?

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is an important differential diagnosis in acute dyspnoea. VCD is caused by adduction of the vocal folds during respiration typically leading to attacks of dyspnoea, stridor and coughing. Here we present an extraordinary case of an untypical paradoxical vocal fold adduction in a 15-year-old girl with stridor persisting over several weeks.

[Congenital bilateral vocal cord paralysis].

Congenital bilateral vocal cord paralysis (CBVCP) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition and awareness of the condition is necessary to ensure early diagnosis and treatment. This case describes a 25-month-old boy suffering from CBVCP. The main symptoms at birth were inspiratory stridor combined with a normal voice and feeding problems. The difficulties in achieving the right diagnosis are demonstrated, and the treatment so far, including tracheotomy and a feeding tube, is outlined. The importance of fibre optic laryngoscopy in both diagnosis and control is stressed.

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis in children.

Bilateral vocal cord paralysis in children with its many causes presents a challenging problem to the pediatric otolaryngologist. Traditionally, management of bilateral vocal cord paralysis includes securing the airway with a tracheotomy and waiting for spontaneous recovery. Surgeons have tried a variety of surgical procedures in lieu of or in addition to tracheotomy, but none are perfect solutions to the problem. This article reviews the current surgical procedures for bilateral vocal cord paralysis in the pediatric population with a particular focus on the senior author's experience with the

Vocal cord dysfunction: dealing with aggressivity.

QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is characterised by recurrent attacks of paradoxical adduction of the vocal cords during inspiration, accompanied clinically by dyspnoea attacks with inspiratory stridor lasting between minutes and hours. The aim of the study is to evaluate the self-perception of patients suffering from VCD and how they deal with aggressivity. METHODS: The Giessen Test (GT) and the Picture Frustration Test (PFT) were used on 6 patients with VCD. RESULTS: Five variables show significant differences between the patients with VCD and the values of the normativ

Bilateral idiopathic vocal cord palsy.

We present 3 cases of bilateral vocal cord palsy who presented with acute respiratory distress with features of upper airway obstruction requiring tracheostomy. No cause could be found despite clinical evaluation and laboratory investigations. This diagnosis should be considered when child presents with upper airway obstruction emergency after ruling out other important causes of stridor and laryngoscopic examination is warranted in such cases for diagnosis.

Tonsillar cyst of the false vocal cord.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To report, for the first time, tonsillar cyst of the false vocal cord. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. METHODS: Case presentation and literature review. RESULTS: A 74-year-old woman with a mass in the false vocal cord presented with hoarseness. Histopathological examination revealed tonsillar cyst. Marsupialization via microlaryngeal approach failed. Finally the cyst was resected successfully through a lateral cervical approach with concomitant tracheotomy. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of tonsillar cyst in the false vocal cord in English literature. The cyst was

CT assessment of vocal cord medialization.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) occurs after iatrogenic injury or disease process and is associated with dysphonia and aspiration. Various surgical options are available for treatment of UVCP, including vocal cord medialization thyroplasty and injection laryngoplasty. These augmentative procedures improve phonation and airway protection. Our purpose was to demonstrate the CT appearance of implants used for the treatment of UVCP. METHODS: Twelve patients treated surgically for UVCP were studied with helical CT. The vocal cords were augmented by using Silastic imp

Vocal cord dysfunction: a case report.

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is a respiratory condition characterized by the paradoxical closure of the vocal cords. This condition results in a myriad of symptoms that would be expected from an upper airway obstruction including anxiety, hyperventilation, wheezing, stridor, shortness of breath, dyspnea, and suprasternal and neck muscle retraction. with known VCD who underwent local anesthesia with intravenous sedation for perianal skin tag removal. Vocal cord dysfunction in children and adolescents.

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is a nonorganic disorder of the larynx that involves unintentional paradoxical adduction of the vocal cords while breathing. The resultant symptoms can include dyspnea, chest tightness, cough, throat tightness, wheezing, or voice change. Most patients with VCD are female, and among adolescents and children, VCD tends to be triggered by exercise and is typically confused with exercise-induced asthma. Both gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and psychiatric illness have been reported as having strong associations with VCD, although, to date, there is no evidence t

[Vocal cord dysfunction in children and adolescents].

More attention has been given to vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) in the past years. Even though the disease is known since 1983 and was brought to mind at least casuistically through the years, often VCD was not diagnosed as such, being mistaken for bronchial asthma - at times with grave consequences for the patient. VCD causes the acute onset of stridulous respiration with acute dyspnea making the differential diagnosis of asthma quite suggestive. The inspirational stridor and a peracute progression of the disease should cause doubts as to the diagnosis of asthma. We collected case reports and d

Vocal cord paralysis in infants and children.

Vocal cord paralysis is the second most common cause of neonatal stridor. Recognition of laryngeal paralysis warrants further evaluation for an underlying etiology as it is frequently a manifestation of a multisystem anomaly. Initial intervention must concentrate on airway stabilization and treatment of any underlying conditions. Management strategies should be individualized and focus on maintenance of a safe and stable airway, acquisition of intelligible speech, and deglutition without aspiration.
