Geological sources of H2 and abiotic CH4 have had a critical role in the evolution of our planet and the development of life and sustainability of the deep subsurface biosphere. Yet the origins of these sources are largely unconstrained. Hydration of mantle rocks, or serpentinization, is widely recognized to produce H2 and favour the abiotic genesis of CH4 in shallow settings. However, deeper sources of H2 and abiotic CH4 are missing from current models, which mainly invoke more oxidized fluids at convergent margins. Here we combine data from exhumed subduction zone high-pressure rocks and the

This paper is a critical reconsideration of Freud's analysis (1907) of Wilhelm Jensen's novella Gradiva: A Pompeian Fantasy (1903). Freud's interest was aroused by the parallels between Jensen's presentation of dreams and Freud's model of dream formation just published in The Interpretation of Dreams (1900). Freud also acclaims Jensen's presentation of the formation and "cure" of his protagonist's delusion about a marble bas-relief of a woman walking. This paper argues for the centrality of the phenomenon of fetishism, briefly considered but excluded from Freud's analysis. The fantasy of Gradi

UNLABELLED: Indonesia ranks among the world's most disaster-prone countries due to its location within the Pacific Ring of Fire. West Sumatra, in particular, frequently experiences earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, flash floods, and hydrometeorological hazards. These recurring disasters highlight the urgent need for mitigation strategies that integrate scientific approaches with traditional indigenous knowledge. This study explores the potential of Minangkabau indigenous knowledge as a source of values, knowledge, and socio-cultural practices that can be incorporated into social studi

We revealed that the absorption aerosol lying below or above the morning residual layer (MRL) promotes (stove effect, heating the MRL layer) or strongly inhibits (dome effect, heating the temperature inversion layer) the development of planetary boundary layer (PBL) after sunrise, while scattering aerosol exhibits similar suppression (surface or aloft umbrella effect) on the PBL regardless of its vertical location. However, the role of different type of aerosols (i.e., strong absorption aerosol and purely scattering aerosol) present from MRL to upper atmosphere remains lacking and therefore, n

Endophytic fungi are well recognized as prolific producers of structurally diverse natural products. In this study, three endophytic fungal isolates - Penicillium singorense MA-S1, MA-S3, and PDA-S2 - were obtained in Sasmuan mangrove forest, which had previously been affected and altered by the lahar from the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. Morphological characterization and 18S rDNA/ITS sequencing confirmed their taxonomic placement in the Penicillium genus. The three isolates were subjected to fermentation using rice medium, and metabolites were extracted using ethyl acetate. Crude extracts

Post mortem abnormal modification of bone are known as pseudopathologies. The geochemical characteristic of the burial soil and/or the presence of biological agents may produce marked changes in bone preservation. This could be the case for a young individual, E74, from Herculaneum, which was a Roman town near Naples completely destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE. E74 is an incomplete skeleton of a male individual of 7-8 years of age. Its second and third cervical vertebrae, the eighth thoracic vertebra and the first lumbar vertebra show a septum dividing the vertebral

Local adaptation plays a critical role in an organism's ability to survive and reproduce in diverse environmental conditions, potentially improving an organism's response to stressful conditions such as ocean acidification or pollution. In this study, the effects of lower pH coupled with the presence of environmental contaminants were assessed on sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) collected outside and inside a volcanic CO2-vent system, where the mean ambient pH is 8.1 and 7.7, respectively. Both groups of sea urchins were spawned, and offspring were reared at pH 8.1 and 7.7, and in the prese

We hypothesized that Cholera (Vibrio cholerae) that appeared along Lake Kivu in the African Rift in the seventies, might be controlled by volcano-tectonic activity, which, by increasing surface water and groundwater salinity and temperature, may partly rule the water characteristics of Lake Kivu and promote V. cholerae proliferation. Volcanic activity (assessed weekly by the SO2 flux of Nyiragongo volcano plume over the 2007-2012 period) is highly positively correlated with the water conductivity, salinity and temperature of the Kivu lake. Over the 2007-2012 period, these three parameters were

Glaciers are populated by a large number of microorganisms including bacteria, archaea and microeukaryotes. Several factors such as solar radiation, nutrient availability and water content greatly determine the diversity and abundance of these microbial populations, the type of metabolism and the biogeochemical cycles. Three ecosystems can be differentiated in glaciers: supraglacial, subglacial and englacial ecosystems. Firstly, the supraglacial ecosystem, sunlit and oxygenated, is predominantly populated by photoautotrophic microorganisms. Secondly, the subglacial ecosystem contains a majorit

The village of Furnas, like other active volcanic areas in the world, exhibits high levels of hazardous gases. We aimed to investigate the existence of a possible association between chronic exposure to volcanic sulfur gases and chronic bronchitis. To investigate this, we used two populations, one exposed to active manifestations of volcanism (Furnas) and another from an area where no volcanic activity took place for over three million years (Santa Maria), both in the Azores. We used data on the incidence of chronic bronchitis among both populations (1991-2001), obtained from the records of ea

Medical geology (MG) examines the interactions between geological materials, environmental processes, and human health, with particular importance in disaster-prone regions, where rapid geological changes can abruptly intensify geogenic exposures and necessitate immediate public health responses. Geological events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and dust storms can mobilize hazardous geogenic materials, enhancing atmospheric dispersion and inhalation exposure. Although the relevance of disaster-driven geogenic hazards is increasingly recognized, quantitative evidence of th

Recent excavations at the early Middle Pleistocene site of Mata Menge in the So'a Basin of central Flores, Indonesia, have yielded hominin fossils attributed to a population ancestral to Late Pleistocene Homo floresiensis. Here we describe the age and context of the Mata Menge hominin specimens and associated archaeological findings. The fluvial sandstone layer from which the in situ fossils were excavated in 2014 was deposited in a small valley stream around 700 thousand years ago, as indicated by (40)Ar/(39)Ar and fission track dates on stratigraphically bracketing volcanic ash and pyroclast

The potential global atmospheric and climatic consequences of nuclear war are investigated using models previously developed to study the effects of volcanic eruptions. Although the results are necessarily imprecise due to wide range of possible scenaros and uncertainty in physical parameters, the most probable first-order effects are serious. Significant hemispherical attenuation of the solar radiation flux and subfreezing land temperatures may be caused by fine dust raised in high-yield nuclear surface bursts and by smoke from city and forest fires ignited by airbursts of all yields. For man

OBJECTIVE: To describe the ocular signs and symptoms of patients complaining of eye irritation due to volcanic fog (vog).
METHODS: The study utilized a non-comparative, retrospective chart review of 30 patients who had a chief complaint of eye irritation, which the subjects attributed to vog. Ocular signs and symptoms are described and related to the ambient concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), particulate matter sized 2.5 microns (PM(2.5)), and vog visibility in O'ahu during the period of the study.
RESULTS: Ocular signs noted were conjunctival injection (100%), clear mucous discharge (

Sulfur isotopes in ancient sediments provide a record of past environmental conditions. The long-time-scale variability and apparent asymmetry in the magnitude of minor sulfur isotope fractionation in Archean sediments remain unexplained. Using an integrated biogeochemical model of the Archean sulfur cycle, we find that the preservation of mass-independent sulfur is influenced by a variety of extra-atmospheric mechanisms, including biological activity and continental crust formation. Preservation of atmospherically produced mass-independent sulfur implies limited metabolic sulfur cycling befor

BACKGROUND: Cholera remains a major (and increasing) global public health problem. Goma, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been a major cholera hotspot in Africa since 1994 and is currently experiencing one of the largest outbreaks in the world. This article contributes to the existing scholarship on cholera risk by utilizing a variety of qualitative research methods.
METHODS: Data were collected between 2021 and 2022 using in-depth interviews, narrative interviews, key informant interviews, transect walks and a participatory mapping workshop, in six areas of Goma. Local

Global climate appears to be changing at an unprecedented rate. Climate change can be caused by several factors that include variations in solar radiation received by earth, oceanic processes (such as oceanic circulation), plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions, as well as human-induced alterations of the natural world. Many human activities, such as the use of fossil fuel and the consequent accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, land consumption, deforestation, industrial processes, as well as some agriculture practices are contributing to global climate change. Indeed, many aut

The global sulfur cycle plays a critical role in the redox evolution of Earth's surface and upper mantle, yet the distribution and origin of sulfur in the mantle remains largely unconstrained. El Hierro is a volcanic island in the Canary archipelago that is fed by sulfur-rich magmas. To constrain the origin of sulfur in these melts, we combine in situ sulfur isotope analyses with regression modeling. We calculate that undegassed El Hierro melts have δ34S values of 0 ± 2‰. The average δ34S of undegassed El Hierro melts is 0.3‰ to 1‰ higher than magmas erupting at mid-ocean ridges. Mass balance
