Expanding the Use of Six-Minute Walking Test in Patients with Intermittent Claudication.

BACKGROUND: Six-min walking test (6MWT) has been widely in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) to quantify the walking impairment and the efficacy of different therapeutic interventions. Despite the aforementioned usefulness of 6MWT for PAD, the information provided by this test goes beyond the meters walked. The aim of this study was to describe the relative values of 6MWT and body weight-walking distance product (DW) in patients with symptomatic PAD. METHODS: Two hundred twenty-seven patients with symptomatic PAD participated in the study. The 6MWT was performed and ab

Six-Minutes' Walk Test and Handgrip Strength Associated with Increased Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Colorectal Cancer.

PURPOSE: The number of cancer survivors has been increasing in Europe by 3.5% per year since 2010. Overall, 38% of all prevalent cases will live more than 10 yr after the diagnosis. Colorectal cancer (CRC) stands as the second most prevalent cancer among survivors across genders. Interestingly, most CRC survivors will be older than 75 and will possibly need survivorship care services. This study's primary aim was to investigate the association between physical fitness and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with CRC. Secondary analyses explored detailed subdomains. METHODS: We

Accompanied versus unaccompanied walking for continuous oxygen saturation measurement during 6-min walk test in COPD: a randomised crossover study.

The aim of this study was to determine if there is a difference in 6-min walk test (6MWT) distance when the assessor accompanies the patient to continuously measure peripheral oxygen saturation (S pO2 ) compared to the patient walking unaccompanied.  We conducted a randomised crossover study to evaluate the impact of the assessor walking with the patient during the 6MWT (6MWTwith) versus the patient walking alone (6MWTwithout). At the end of a pulmonary rehabilitation programme, each patient performed two 6MWTs in random order and separated by a 30-min rest.  49 patients with chronic obstructi

Calf Muscle Oxygen Saturation during 6-Minute Walk Test and Its Relationship with Walking Impairment in Symptomatic Peripheral Artery Disease.

BACKGROUND: Impaired microcirculation is associated with poor walking capacity in symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) patients during treadmill test; however, this test does not simulate the efforts of daily walking of these patients. Thus, the aim of the study was to describe the microcirculation responses during a 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and to analyze the relationship between microcirculation indicators and walking impairment in symptomatic PAD patients. METHODS: Thirty-four patients were included (mean age = 67.6 ± 11.2 years). Their clinical characteristics were collected, and

A prospective, longitudinal study evaluating the baseline six-minute walk test as an individual reference value in systemic sclerosis patients.

OBJECTIVES: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) are the leading causes of death in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Although the six-minute walk test (6MWT) is used for evaluating ILD and PAH, no data are available on the evolution of the six-minute walk distance (6MWD) in SSc patients without ILD and PAH and whether the baseline 6MWD could serve as individual reference value for the management of those who will develop PAH or ILD. METHODS: Prospectively collected data of the first 6MWT (at baseline or 6-month follow-up) and the 6MWTs at 18-, 30-, 42-, 54-, and

Oxygen uptake on-kinetics during six-minute walk test predicts short-term outcomes after off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the ability of oxygen uptake kinetics to predict short-term outcomes after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting. METHODS: Fifty-two patients aged 60.9 ± 7.8 years waiting for off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery were evaluated. The 6-min walk test distance was performed pre-operatively, while simultaneously using a portable cardiopulmonary testing device. The transition of oxygen uptake kinetics from rest to exercise was recorded to calculate oxygen uptake kinetics fitting a monoexponential regression model. Oxygen uptake at steady state, constant time,

Validity and reliability of measurement of peripheral oxygen saturation during the 6-Minute Walk Test in patients with systemic sclerosis.

Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) using the fingers may have important limitations due to Raynaud's phenomenon and sclerodactyly in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Sensors located at more central body positions may be more accurate as these as less prone to Raynaud attacks. To determine the validity and reliability of the SpO2 measured at the finger, forehead, and earlobe during the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). Eighty two patients with SSc had an arterial line placed while performing the 6MWT. Peripheral oxygen saturation was simultaneously measured by finger, forehead, and earlobe sen
