Biomonitoring of manganese metal pollution in water and its impacts on biological activities of Biomphalaria alexandrina snail and larvicidal potencies.

Metal pollution has many dangerous environmental and human health consequences due to the bioaccumulation in the tissues. The present study aims to measure the bioaccumulation factor of the manganese (Mn) heavy metal in Biomphalaria alexandrina snails' tissues and water samples. The current results showed the concentration of Mn heavy metal in water (87.5 mg/l) and its bioaccumulation factor in Helisoma duryi tissue was higher than that in tissues of Physa acuta and B. alexandrina snails. Results showed that 87.5 mg/l Mn concentration had miracidicidal and cercaricidal activities. Also, this c

Corpse decomposition increases nitrogen pollution and alters the succession of nirK-type denitrifying communities in different water types.

Cadaver decomposition as high-quality nutrient inputs may exert strong perturbation on the aquatic environments, such as high nitrogen or nitrate pollution. Denitrifying bacteria may reduce nitrate to nitrogen gas, thereby decreasing the nitrogen pollution and improving self-purification ability of aquatic ecosystem. However, how nirK denitrifying communities in water respond to cadaver decomposition remains unknown. Thus, we employed high-throughput sequencing and chemical analysis to investigate the succession of nirK-type denitrifying communities in tap water and Yellow river water (experim

The Role of Detoxification Enzymes in the Adaptation of the Major Malaria Vector Anopheles gambiae (Giles; Diptera: Culicidae) to Polluted Water.

The main malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa, the Anopheles gambiae (Giles; Diptera: Culicidae), normally breed in clean water sources. However, evidence suggests an on-going adaptation of Anopheline species to polluted breeding habitats in urban settings. This study aimed at understanding the adaptation to breeding in water bodies with different qualities, in five selected mosquito breeding sites in urban Accra, Ghana. The study sites were also evaluated for the WHO water-quality parameters as a measure of pollution, and insecticide residues. Field mosquitoes were evaluated for five genes;

Drinking water pollution with respective of fluoride in the semi-arid region of Basara, Nirmal district, Telangana State, India.

Fluoride is an essential microelement for human health. Statistically, smaller quantities (<1.0 mg/L) in drinking water are usually considered to have a beneficial effect on the rate of occurrence of dental caries, particularly among children, but excessive continuous exposure (>1.5 mg/L) to fluoride can give rise to a number of adverse effects, including dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, increased rate of bone fractures, decreased birth rates, increased rate of urolithiasis (kidney stones), impaired thyroid function, and impaired development of intelligence in children [1], [2], [3], [4],

Enhanced phytoremediation of cadmium polluted water through two aquatic plants Veronica anagallis-aquatica and Epilobium laxum.

Toxic metal-contaminated water is a major threat to sustainable agriculture and environment. Plants have the natural ability to absorb and concentrate essential elements in its tissues from water solution, and this ability of plants can be exploited to remove heavy/toxic metals from the contaminated water. For this purpose, two plants Veronica anagallis-aquatica and Epilobium laxum were hydroponically studied. The effect of different fertilizers (NPK) and plant growth regulators (GA3 and IAA) were evaluated on growth, biomass, free proline, phenolics, and chlorophyll contents, and their role i

Microbial reporter gene assay as a diagnostic and early warning tool for the detection and characterization of toxic pollution in surface waters.

Surface water samples constantly receive a vast mixture of micropollutants mainly originating from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). High-throughput live cell arrays provide a promising method for the characterization of the effects of chemicals and the associated molecular mechanisms. In the present study, this test system was evaluated for the first time for the characterization of a set of typical surface water extracts receiving effluent from WWTPs. The extracts containing complex mixtures of micropollutants were analyzed for the expression of 90 stress responsive genes in the Escherich

Qualitative validation of a liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry screening method for organic pollutants in waters.

A multiclass wide-scope screening of organic contaminants in natural and waste water has been developed and validated for qualitative purposes, i.e. detection and reliable identification of compounds detected in samples at a certain level of concentration. The screening is based on the use of liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF MS) and has been applied to water samples of different origin and matrix composition (surface water, ground water and effluent urban wastewater). Water samples were spiked with a standard mixture of around 150 organic co

Seasonal change of PCDDs/PCDFs/DL-PCBs in the water of Ayase River, Japan: pollution sources and their contributions to TEQ.

In Japan, Ayase River is one of the most polluted rivers by PCDDs, PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs, which are referred to as dioxins in this paper. The water samples of the river were collected once per month for a year, and dioxins were analyzed to examine the dioxin sources and their contributions to toxic equivalent (TEQ). The WHO-2006 TEQs ranged from 0.26 to 7.0 pg-TEQL(-1) and the average was 2.7 pg-TEQL(-1); eight of 12 samples exceeded the environmental quality standard in Japan (1.0 pg-TEQL(-1)). The TEQ value was high during the irrigation period from May to August. The most part of the d

Sensitivity analysis using a diffuse pollution hydrologic model to assess factors affecting pesticide concentrations in river water.

We quantitatively evaluated the factors that affect the concentrations of rice-farming pesticides (an herbicide and a fungicide) in river water by a sensitivity analysis using a diffuse pollution hydrologic model. Pesticide degradation and adsorption in paddy soil affected concentrations of the herbicide pretilachlor but did not affect concentrations of the fungicide isoprothiolane. We attributed this difference to the timing of pesticide application in relation to irrigation and drainage of the rice paddy fields. The herbicide was applied more than a month before water drainage of the fields

Total mercury and methylmercury in lake water in years before and after removal of mercury-polluted pulp fiber sediment.

There is an elevated presence of mercury (Hg) in the biosphere because of anthropogenic activities. The resulting damage to ecosystems and human health increases dramatically when microorganisms produce highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg). Total Hg (THg), MeHg and ancillary water chemistry were measured in two connected lakes, separated by a short stream stretch, before (1996, 1998 and 2003) and after (2007, 2009 and 2010) the removal of Hg-polluted pulp fiber sediment. Over the study period, there was a decrease in sulfate in the surface water of both lakes, presumably because of declining atmo

Multifunctional self-assembled adsorption microspheres based on waste bamboo shoot shells for multi-pollutant water purification.

In this study, multilayer self-assembled multifunctional bamboo shoot shell biochar microspheres (BSSBM) were prepared, in which bamboo shoot shell biochar was used as the carrier, titanium dioxide as the intermediate medium, and chitosan as the adhesion layer. The adsorption behavior of BSSBM on heavy metals Ag(I) and Pd(II), antibiotics, and dye wastewater was systematically analyzed. BSSBM shows a wide range of adsorption capacity. BSSBM is a promising candidate for the purification of real polluted water, not only for metal ions, but also for Tetracycline (TC) and Methylene Blue (MB). The

Water pollution from pharmaceutical use in livestock farming: Assessing differences between livestock types and production systems.

Livestock production is a major source of pharmaceutical emissions to the environment. The current scientific discourse focuses on measuring and modeling emissions as well as assessing their risks. Although several studies corroborate the severity of pharmaceutical pollution resulting from livestock farming, differences in pollution between livestock types and production systems are largely unknown. In fact, there is no comprehensive analysis of factors influencing pharmaceutical use-the emission's source-in the diverse production systems. To address these knowledge gaps, we developed a framew

Pollution status and ecological risks of metals in surface water of a coastal estuary and health risk assessment for recreational users.

Since the areas close to the Sundarbans mangrove estuary, which is one of the most dynamic and productive ecosystems in the world, are very suitable for urban and industrial activities, the coastal areas of this ecosystem are constantly exposed to metal contamination. In this study, we analyzed the levels, spatial distributions, sources, pollution status, ecological risks, and health risks for recreational users of 16 metals in surface water collected from 18 sampling sites in the Sundarbans estuary. Considering the mean values of metals, Sr (2523 μg/L), Al (1731 μg/L), B (1692 μg/L) and Fe (1

Multidrug resistance and class 1 integron presence in Escherichia coli isolates from a polluted drainage ditch's water.

The impact of contamination of water drainage ditches in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has been scarcely studied in Mexico. In this regard, 101 isolates of E. coli were obtained from water samples from a ditch in Sinaloa, during one year. The antimicrobial resistant profiles, the presence of the class 1 integron and evolutionary relationship of intI1 sequences were determined. The 47.5% of strains were resistant and 5.9% multidrug resistant (MDR) with an average multiple antibiotic resistance index value of 0.45. The highest resistance was registered with β-lactam (39.6%) an
