A Method for Microcalcifications Detection in Breast Mammograms.

Breast cancer is the most cause of death for women above age 40 around the world. In this paper, we propose a method to detect microcalcifications in digital mammography images using two-dimensional Discrete Wavelets Transform and image enhancement techniques for removing noise as well as to get a better contrast. The initial step is applying a preprocessing techniques to improve the edge of the breast and then segmentation process (Region of interest) for eliminating some regions in the image, which are not useful for the mammography interpretation. Then unsharp masking and histogram modifica

Reproducible benchmark of wavelet-enhanced intrabody communication biometric identification.

Intrabody communication (IBC) channels offer physiological diversity that may support future wearable biometric identification. Recent reports of over 99 per cent identification accuracy have frequently resulted from data leakage, where samples from the same subject are seen in both training and evaluation, yielding inflated and unreliable metrics. In this work, we establish a public, leakage-free benchmark for IBC biometrics built on a 30-subject open dataset, using strict subject-wise 80/20 splits repeated five times to ensure reproducibility. We systematically compare frequency-domain and t

Smart Diagnostics: Hierarchical Deep Learning of Acoustic Emission Signals for Early Crack Detection in Zirconia Dental Structures.

Monolithic zirconia restorations are frequently affected by the unnoticed growth of subcritical cracks, a failure process that is not captured by traditional imaging methods like radiographs and ultrasounds in sophisticated dental architectures. To address this evaluative inadequacy, this research introduces a hierarchical deep learning framework for microcrack detection and spatial localization. We promote a hierarchical deep learning system that integrates Acoustic Emission (AE) detection alongside signal processing. Raw AE signals utilized during dynamic loading are enhanced via Kalman filt

Frequency-Preserving Readout Design and Error Characterization for CWT-Based rPPG Heart-Rate Estimation.

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) estimates heart rate (HR) from facial color variations. In continuous wavelet transform (CWT) scalograms, HR is represented by position along the frequency axis, whereas global average pooling (GAP) does not retain this coordinate explicitly. We investigated whether a structured frequency-localizing readout improves HR estimation and analyzed the remaining errors. Leave-one-subject-out evaluations were conducted on three datasets (PURE, UBFC-rPPG, and BH-rPPG) using a fixed chrominance-based signal-extraction and CWT pipeline. The proposed model combined a fr

Pathological Priors Inspired Network for Vertebral Osteophytes Recognition.

Automatic vertebral osteophyte recognition in Digital Radiography is of great importance for the early prediction of degenerative disease but is still a challenge because of the tiny size and high inter-class similarity between normal and osteophyte vertebrae. Meanwhile, common sampling strategies applied in Convolution Neural Network could cause detailed context loss. All of these could lead to an incorrect positioning predicament. In this paper, based on important pathological priors, we define a set of potential lesions of each vertebra and propose a novel Pathological Priors Inspired Netwo

Classification of heart sounds based on quality assessment and wavelet scattering transform.

Automatic classification of heart sound plays an important role in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. In this study, a heart sound sample classification method based on quality assessment and wavelet scattering transform was proposed. First, the ratio of zero crossings (RZC) and the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) were used for assessing the quality of heart sound signal. The first signal segment conforming to the threshold standard was selected as the current sample for the continuous heart sound signal. Using the wavelet scattering transform, the wavelet scattering

Detection of shockable ventricular cardiac arrhythmias from ECG signals using FFREWT filter-bank and deep convolutional neural network.

Among various life-threatening cardiac disorders, ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) are shockable ventricular cardiac arrhythmias (SVCA) which require immediate defibrillation therapy for the survival of patients. Timely and accurate detection of rapid VT or VF episodes using ECG signals is extremely important before initiating external defibrillator (AED) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapies. In this paper, a novel approach for the detection of SVCA using ECG signals is proposed. The fixed frequency range empirical wavelet transform (EWT) (FF

Waveform analysis of tremor may help to differentiate Parkinson's disease from drug-induced parkinsonism.

In this study, we analyzed the waveform characteristics of resting tremor by accelerometer recordings in patients with drug-induced parkinsonism (DIP) and Parkinson's disease (PD). We prospectively recruited 12 patients with tremulous PD and 12 patients with DIP presenting with resting tremor. Tremor was recorded from the more affected side and was recorded twice for a 60 s period in each patient. Peak frequency, amplitude and all harmonic peaks were obtained, and the asymmetry of the decay of the autocorrelation function, third momentum and time-reversal invariance were also computed using a

Time-frequency analysis of accelerometry data for detection of myoclonic seizures.

Four time-frequency and time-scale methods are studied for their ability of detecting myoclonic seizures from accelerometric data. Methods that are used are: the short-time Fourier transform (STFT), the Wigner distribution (WD), the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) using a Daubechies wavelet, and a newly introduced model-based matched wavelet transform (MOD). Real patient data are analyzed using these four time-frequency and time-scale methods. To obtain quantitative results, all four methods are evaluated in a linear classification setup. Data from 15 patients are used for training and data

WPF-Mamba: wavelet-based progressive multispectral fusion mamba for fine-grained microorganism detection.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate detection of environmental microorganisms is key to ecological monitoring and public health risk assessment. Multispectral imaging yields rich biochemical and structural cues, yet its practical use is hampered by inter-band spectral heterogeneity and the small, visually similar traits of microorganisms objects. These issues impair cross-band feature alignment and discriminability, thus limiting the performance of existing detection frameworks. METHODS: To address these challenges, we propose a multispectral framework for fine-grained microorganisms detection named WPF-M

Association between the incidence of typhoid and paratyphoid fever and meteorological variables in Guizhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid/paratyphoid fever (TPF) is endemic in Guizhou. We conducted wavelet analysis and Spearman's rank correlation analysis to explore the impact of meteorological variations on TPF infection in Guizhou, in an attempt to assess the risk factors associated with TPF epidemics. METHODS: We examined the association between TPF incidence in Guizhou and temperature, precipitation and relative humidity using 24 years of data from 1984 to 2007. Periodicities of TPF incidence and the impact of climate factors on the TPF were detected by Spearman's rank correlation and wavelet analysis,

Developing of robust and high accurate ECG beat classification by combining Gaussian mixtures and wavelets features.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) beat classification is a significant application in computer-aided analysis and diagnosis technologies. This paper proposed a method to detect, extract informative features, and classify ECG beats utilizing real ECG signals available in the standard MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database, with 10,502 beats had been extracted from it. The present study classifies the ECG beat into six classes, normal beat (N), Left bundle branch block beat, Right bundle branch block beat, Premature ventricular contraction, atrial premature beat, and aberrated atrial premature, using Gaussian mixtur

Sound production in the tiger-tail seahorse Hippocampus comes: Insights into the sound producing mechanisms.

Acoustic signals of the tiger-tail seahorse (Hippocampus comes) during feeding were studied using wavelet transform analysis. The seahorse "click" appears to be a compounded sound, comprising three acoustic components that likely come from two sound producing mechanisms. The click sound begins with a low-frequency precursor signal, followed by a sudden high-frequency spike that decays quickly, and a final, low-frequency sinusoidal component. The first two components can, respectively, be traced to the sliding movement and forceful knock between the supraorbital bone and coronet bone of the cra

Correlations between COVID-19 cases and temperature, air humidity, and social isolating rate with cross wavelet transform and wavelet coherence: Case study of New York and São Paulo cities.

The COVID-19 pandemic originated in 2019 and has become an endemic disease that we must learn to live with, similar to other strains of influenza. The Organization (WHO) declared on May 5, 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland, the end of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern regarding COVID-19. As vaccines become more widely available and the pandemic appears to be improved, our focus shifts to the challenges we still face. Understanding how external factors like temperature, air humidity, and social isolation impact the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains a crucial challenge beyond

FracNeXt: Enhancing visual representation learning in sequence models with fractal wavelets.

Recent applications of sequence models, such as Transformers and Mamba, in the vision domain have demonstrated promising performance. However, the processes of patch token extraction and token mixing inevitably result in the irreversible loss of spatial information. Existing sequence models for vision tasks rely heavily on residual connections to mitigate this issue, yet they overlook the limitations of residual connections in maintaining frequency stability. To address these challenges, we propose Multiple Wavelet Patch Partition (MWPP), a method that extracts patch tokens while preserving th

Assessing methodological variability in wastewater surveillance: A wavelet decomposition approach.

Wastewater surveillance has emerged as a critical public health tool, enabling early detection of infectious disease outbreaks and providing timely, population-level insights into community health trends. However, variability in sample collection and processing, for example, between wastewater influent and settled solids, can introduce methodological noise that differentially impacts true epidemiological signals and limits cross-site comparability. To address this challenge, we aimed to discern underlying disease trends from methodological variability in SARS-CoV-2 wastewater data using the di

Embedded system design for classification of COPD and pneumonia patients by lung sound analysis.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia are lethal pulmonary illnesses with equivocal nature of abnormal pulmonic acoustics. Using lung sound signals, the classification of pulmonary abnormalities is a difficult task. A standalone system was conceived for screening COPD and Pneumonia patients through signal processing and machine learning methodologies. The proposed system will assist practitioners and pulmonologists in the accurate classification of disease. In this research work, ICBHI's and self-collected lung sound (LS) databases are used to investigate COPD and pneumoni

Seizure Onset Detection Using Empirical Mode Decomposition and Common Spatial Pattern.

Automatic seizure onset detection plays an important role in epilepsy diagnosis. In this paper, a novel seizure onset detection method is proposed by combining empirical mode decomposition (EMD) of long-term scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) with common spatial pattern (CSP). First, wavelet transform (WT) and EMD are employed on EEG recordings respectively for filtering pre-processing and time-frequency decomposition. Then CSP is applied to reduce the dimension of multi-channel time-frequency representation, and the variance is extracted as the only feature. Afterwards, a support vector machine

Analysis of electrooculography signals for the detection of Myasthenia Gravis.

OBJECTIVE: A precursor to more severe forms of Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is ocular MG (OMG) in which the MG symptoms are localized to the eyes. Current MG diagnostic methods are often invasive, painful, and not always specific. The objective of the proposed work was to extract quantifiable features from electrooculography (EOG) signals recorded around the eyes and develop an alternative non-invasive screening method for detecting MG. METHODS: EOG signals acquired from MG and Control subjects were analyzed for eye movement characteristics and quantified using time and wavelet domain signal proces
