Lateralized neural and oculomotor alterations in temporal lobe epilepsy: A combined eye-tracking and event-related potential study.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is associated with lateralized memory dysfunction, but the dynamic cognitive processes underlying these deficits remain poorly characterized by standard clinical scales. This study investigated whether combining eye-tracking and electroencephalography (EEG) could uncover specific, lateralized patterns of visual exploration and brain activity in LTLE and RTLE patients during a memory task. METHODS: We enrolled 12 LTLE patients, 18 RTLE patients, and 20 healthy controls (HC), administering Wechsler Memory Scale and a high-load change detection task with s

Forward and backward digit span difficulties in children with specific learning disorder.

This study examined performance in the forward and backward digit span task of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) in a large group of children with specific learning disorder (SLD) as compared with a group of typically developing children matched for age and sex. Our results further support the hypothesis that the intellectual difficulties of children with SLD involve working memory in the forward digit span task to a greater extent than in the backward digit span task. The correlation of the two spans with a General Ability Index (GAI) was similar in SLD, an

Complete abolition of reading and writing ability with a third ventricle colloid cyst: implications for surgical intervention and proposed neural substrates of visual recognition and visual imaging ability.

We report a rare case of a patient unable to read (alexic) and write (agraphic) after a mild head injury. He had preserved speech and comprehension, could spell aloud, identify words spelt aloud and copy letter features. He was unable to visualise letters but showed no problems with digits. Neuropsychological testing revealed general visual memory, processing speed and imaging deficits. Imaging data revealed an 8 mm colloid cyst of the third ventricle that splayed the fornix. Little is known about functions mediated by fornical connectivity, but this region is thought to contribute to memory r

Differential hand-neglect after a callosal lesion.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between hemispatial neglect and callosal lesions is not fully understood. METHOD: A 74-year-old woman exhibited destruction of the posterior part of the genu and the entire truncus of the corpus callosum and a part of the right cingulate sulcus after infarction of the right pericallosal artery. RESULTS: Three years after the infarction, severe left-sided unilateral spatial neglect was noted for the right hand and mild right-sided unilateral spatial neglect for the left hand. CONCLUSIONS: These findings are consistent with the model of right hemisphere dominance

[So-called sporadic ulcero-mutilating acropathy: neuropsychological study of 10 cases. II].

Ten patients complaining of Sporadic Ulcerating and Mutilating Acropathy (SUMA) of Bureau and Barrière, also known as alcoholic-acrodystrophic neuropathy, were given the Wechsler-Bellevue's intelligence test (form I) and the Rey's memory test for standard psychometric evaluation. Pathologic mental deterioration of an organic type was found in a very large number of cases: 7 out of 10. The psychical picture that has been recognised is of three kinds: I) homogeneous mental deterioration of verbal and performance skills without any important memory feebleness (4 cases); II) partial mental deterio

Limited usefulness of the Rey Fifteen-Item Test in detection of invalid performance in veterans suspected of mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored using the FIT as a measure of performance validity among veterans undergoing neuropsychological evaluation for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). BACKGROUND: The Rey Fifteen-Item Memory Test (FIT) is a performance validity measure criticized for poor sensitivity. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty-seven veterans completed the FIT and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition, Digit Span (DS); 109 of whom completed the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM). FIT cut-offs of <9, <8 and stricter cut-offs were examined using DS and/or TOMM as criterion performance

Adult Dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder in Finland--Project DyAdd: WAIS-III cognitive profiles.

The project Adult Dyslexia and Attention Deficit Disorder in Finland (Project DyAdd) compares adults (n = 119, 18-55 years) with dyslexia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia together with ADHD (comorbid), and healthy controls with neuropsychological, psychophysical, and biological methods. The focus of this article is on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III). The clinical groups performed well compared to the norms, and they did not differ from each other. However, compared to the controls, all of them were slightly poorer in their Full IQ, and o

The relationship of phonological awareness, rapid naming, and verbal memory to severe reading and spelling disability.

The present study examined the relationship of phonological awareness, naming speed, and verbal memory to the scores obtained from five tests assessing word attack, word identification, reading comprehension, and spelling skills in 54 children with severe reading disabilities (48 boys and 6 girls; M age = 9 years, 7 months). Multiple regression analyses indicated that the best predictor of achievement across the five academic tests was the Verbal Comprehension factor from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. Age, socioeconomic status (SES), and externalizing behavior problems

Speed of Information Processing and Verbal Working Memory in Children and Adolescents With Cochlear Implants.

BACKGROUND: Verbal working memory delays are found in many deaf children with cochlear implants compared with normal-hearing peers, but the factors contributing to these delays are not well understood. This study investigated differences between cochlear implant users and normal-hearing peers in memory scanning speed during a challenging verbal working memory task. To better understand variability in verbal working memory capacity within each sample, associations between memory scanning speed, speech recognition, and language were also investigated. METHODS: Twenty-five prelingually deaf, ear

Ventricle size, cortical atrophy and the relationship with neuropsychological status in closed head injury: a quantitative analysis.

Forty-eight patients with a history of moderate to severe closed-head injury (CHI) were examined with neuropsychological measures and computerized tomography (CT). CT scans were assessed with computerized techniques to determine estimated ventricular volumes (VV) and the degree of cortical atrophy (ATVOL) in each patient. VV's then were used to determine volumetric ventricle-brain ratios (VBR) to correct for head size. The WAIS, Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) and Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery (HRNTB) were administered to all patients. Correlational analyses were undertaken betwe

Intelligence and memory outcomes within 10 years of childhood convulsive status epilepticus.

Long-term intelligence and memory outcomes of children post convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) have not been systematically investigated despite evidence of short-term impairments in CSE. The present study aimed to describe intelligence and memory outcomes in children within 10 years of CSE and identify potential risk factors for adverse outcomes. In this cohort study, children originally identified by the population-based North London Convulsive Status Epilepticus in Childhood Surveillance Study (NLSTEPSS) were prospectively recruited between July 2009 and February 2013 and invited for neuro

Semantic distances of WAIS Similarities word pairs in non-demented adults: An item-level index of semantic memory granularity.

Innovative approaches to test scoring can help neuropsychologists detect subtle semantic memory alterations. We focussed on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Similarities (SIM) test and calculated an item-level score based on the 'Leacock & Chodorow '(LCH) semantic distance expressed by each SIM item. We hypothesised that LCH would predict 1) performance on standard semantic memory tests; 2) an Alzheimer aetiology; 3) transentorhinal grey-matter integrity. Six hundred sixty-nine non-demented participants completed a neuropsychological battery inclusive of SIM and consolidated tests of sema

The neural foundation of associative memory: a dynamic functional connectivity study for right-handed young adults.

The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is the core neural construction related to associative memory. This study sought to explore the dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) between the subdivisions of MTL and other regions in the whole brain. Additionally, it sought to determine relationships between connectivity stability and associative memory function, to elucidate the neural foundation of associative memory from the perspectives of dFC. A Wechsler Memory Scale China revised edition (WMS-RC) measurement and a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were conducted to clarify adults' func

Gray matter abnormalities and memory impairment in left mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is a common neurological disorder, with memory impairment being one of its typical symptoms. Most previous studies have focused on assessing declarative memory directly related to hippocampal functions, but emerging data suggest a decline in the efficiency of other types of memory as well. The aim of this study was to comprehensively assess various types of memory and analyze the relationship between memory performance and the volume of selected gray matter structures. METHODS: In total, 21 patients with left-MTLE and 28 age- and education-matc

Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor correlates with verbal memory in ILAE type 2 hippocampal sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Long-term memory deficits are often seen in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Recently, studies showed that patients with hippocampal sclerosis (HS) type 2, which presents with severe neuron loss in CA1 only, performed within the normal range. However, up to 30% of HS type 2 cases have memory deficits. As insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is related to neurogenesis and memory performance, we sought to investigate a possible link between the expression of IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) and verbal memory performance among patients with HS type 2. METHODS: We selected 21 patient

Diminution of context association memory structure in subjects with subjective cognitive decline.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses insidiously from the preclinical stage to dementia. While people with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) have normal cognitive performance, some may be in the preclinical stage of AD. Neurofibrillary tangles appear first in the transentorhinal cortex, followed by the entorhinal cortex in the clinically silent stage of AD. We expected the earliest changes in subjects with SCD to occur in medial temporal subfields other than the hippocampal proper. These selective structural changes would affect specific memory subcomponents. We used the Family Picture subtest

Questioning cognitive heterogeneity and intellectual functioning in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.

Introduction: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are characterized by a variety of multiple cognitive and behavioral impairments, with intellectual, attentional, and executive impairments being the most commonly reported. In populations with multiple neurodevelopmental disorders, the Full Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) may not be a proper measure of intellectual abilities, rarely interpreted in FASD clinical practice because the heterogeneity of the cognitive profile is deemed too strong. We propose a quantitative characterization of this heterogeneity, of the strengths and weaknesses

Disrupted integrity of the fornix is associated with impaired memory organization in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The fornix is a major projection of the hippocampus to and from other brain regions. A previous diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) study has reported disrupted integrity of the fornix in patients with schizophrenia. However, functional significance of the DTI abnormalities of the fornix in schizophrenia has not been fully studied yet. We investigated an association between DTI abnormalities of the fornix and impairment of memory organization in schizophrenia. METHODS: Thirty-one patients with schizophrenia and 65 age- and gender-matched healthy controls underwent DTI, and fractional a
