"It Spread Like Wildfire, as These Things Do": Exploring Mechanisms of Harm in Young Norwegians' Experiences of Image-Based Sexual Abuse.

It is widely reported that image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) victimization is linked to a wide range of detrimental outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. However, knowledge about what shapes victims' experiences remains limited. To explore underlying mechanisms of harm in IBSA incidents, the present study drew on the concept of appraisal to elucidate the various meanings that victims attach to IBSA. For this purpose, we carried out a reflexive thematic analysis of 20 individual in-depth interviews with young male and female victims (ages 16-26) of IBSA. Using this appro

Feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a public mobile app to reduce symptoms of postdisaster distress in adolescent wildfire survivors: Sonoma rises.

In October 2017, Northern California experienced devastating and historic wildfires leaving the community in need of support to foster emotional resilience during the recovery process. Adolescents represent a particularly vulnerable population in the wake of disaster, and digital mental health interventions may hold promise for reaching teens at scale. The present study examined the feasibility and efficacy of a mobile mental health app for disaster, Sonoma Rises. A multiple-baseline single-case experimental design (SCED) utilizing a research-enabled version of the app was employed with seven

Development of retention time indices for comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography and application to ignitable liquid residue mapping in wildfire investigations.

In this study, we introduce a simple three-step workflow for a universally applicable RI system, to be used in GC×GC analysis of ignitable liquid residue (ILR) for arson investigations. The proposed RI system applies a combination of two well-established GC RI systems: non-isothermal Kovats (K) index in the first dimension and Lee (L) index in the second dimension. The proposed KLI RI system showed very good correlations when compared with predicted values and existing RI systems (r2 = 0.97 in first dimension, r2 = 0.99 in second dimension) and was valid for a wide range of analyte concentrati

Respiratory health outcomes following co-exposure to subchronic high temperature, episodic wildfire smoke exposure, and high-cholesterol diet.

BACKGROUND: Increased ambient temperature alongside concomitant heatwaves and wildfire smoke imperil human health. We examined whether long-term episodic exposure to wildfire smoke induced greater respiratory injury/inflammation in male rats subchronically housed at elevated temperature or consuming unhealthy, cholesterol-rich diets. Respiratory effects of wildfire eucalyptus smoke exposure (WFES; ∼7mg/m3 particulate matter) were assessed 2h and 24h post-exposure in rats housed at 22 °C (room temperature; RT) consuming normal diet (ND) and exposed to filtered air (FA) or WFES for 1h. Molecular Characterization of Organophosphorus Compounds in Wildfire Smoke Using 21-T Fourier Transform-Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry.

We present a detailed molecular characterization of organophosphorus compounds in ambient organic aerosol influenced by wildfire smoke. Biomass burning organic aerosol (BBOA) is an important source of phosphorus (P) to surface waters, where even a small imbalance in the P flux can lead to substantial effects on water quality, such as eutrophication, algal blooms, and oxygen depletion. We aimed to exploit the ultrahigh resolving power, mass accuracy, and sensitivity of Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) to explore the molecular composition of an ambient BBOA

Wildfire effects on lipid composition and hydrophobicity of bulk soil and soil size fractions under Quercus suber cover (SW-Spain).

Soil water repellency (hydrophobicity) prevents water from wetting or infiltrating soils, triggering changes in the ecosystems. Fire may develop, enhance or destroy hydrophobicity in previously wettable or water-repellent soils. Soil water repellency is mostly influenced by the quality and quantity of soil organic matter, particularly the lipid fraction. Here we report the results of a study on the effect of fire on the distribution of soil lipids and their role in the hydrophobicity grade of six particle size fractions (2-1, 1-0.5, 0.5-0.25, 0.25-0.1, 0.1-0.05 and <0.05mm) of an Arenosol unde

Assessing the Impact of Wildfire Smoke Transport Through Chemical Transport Modeling, Satellite Retrievals, and Ground-Based Observations of Ozone in Rural Nevada.

Wildfires emit a large amount of ozone precursors, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter into the troposphere and sometimes the stratosphere. With the increasing wildfire events in recent years, the western U.S. regions may experience challenges with higher-than-normal air pollution levels during the fire season (June-October). Therefore, determining the ozone enhancement pattern from wildfire smoke is crucial to understanding the influence of wildfire plume transport on a subregional basis. This study investigates the impact of the 2013 Rim Fire on ozone levels in rural Nevada, employing a

CD4+ T Cell Activation and Peripheral Immune Cell Influx into the Brain Following Wildfire Smoke Exposure is Modulated by a Saturated Fat Diet.

Over the past 40 years, wildfires across the United States have steadily increased, in terms of acreage burned. Smoke from wildfires can exacerbate several cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, with new studies highlighting potential sustained neurological outcomes. The purpose of this study was to delineate the role of peripheral immune populations in woodsmoke-induced neuroinflammation, the timeline of this response, and the impact of diet on each of these factors. Based on previous research on other pollutants and diet introduction, we included a highly saturated fatty acid (coconut oil)

Integrating FT-ICR MS with rule-based prediction and QSAR to resolve nitrogen-containing organic compounds and their toxicity in wildfire-derived PM2.5.

The intensification of wildfire seasons, driven by global warming, has established wildfires as a primary contributor to aerosol particulate matter (APM) levels. However, the formation mechanisms and molecular composition of nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) in wildfire-derived APM remain poorly understood. This study characterizes, at the molecular level, wildfire-derived PM2.5 from a wildfire in a temperate coniferous forest in South Korea. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed that nitrated polycyclic aromatic compound concentrations were approximately 3.4 times

Perceptions of Parcel-Level Wildfire Risk Differ Between Homeowners and Trained Assessors in Wildland-Urban Interface Communities Across the Western United States.

Wildfire risk mitigation on private property is central to reducing community wildfire vulnerability. Homeowners have control over many of the key factors that contribute to wildfire risk on their parcels, yet vulnerable conditions persist. One potential explanation is a misalignment between homeowners' and trained assessors' perceptions of parcel-level wildfire risk. Prior research has documented a "risk gap" in a single community wherein owners often underestimate their parcel-level wildfire risk; however, it is unclear whether such misalignments are widespread. This study replicates and exp

Long-term exposure to wildfire-related PM2·5 and overall survival of older patients with lung cancer: a retrospective, registry-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter (PM2·5) has been identified as a key risk factor for lung cancer incidence and survival. PM2·5 from wildfire smoke is an increasingly important contributor to total PM2·5 in the USA, driven by climate change, and potentially more toxic than non-wildfire PM2·5 due to its smaller particle size and higher toxic contents. However, the effects of wildfire-related PM2·5 on the overall survival of patients with lung cancer remain unclear. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients aged 65 years or older with histologically confirmed primary small-c

A Flexible and Responsive Remote Study Design to Assess Gene Expression Changes During Wildfire Smoke Exposure with homeRNA, an At-home Blood Sampling Kit.

Transcriptomic responses to wildfire smoke are difficult to study given the unpredictability of wildfires and the challenges of collecting blood during active disasters. To overcome these challenges, we developed a flexible study design leveraging homeRNA, our at-home blood collection and RNA stabilization kit. Between June 2021 and April 2022, 58 participants across 10 U.S. states collected 635 blood samples before, during, and after wildfire events. This responsive approach captured three exposure groups: high exposure in Okanogan County, Washington, medium exposure from transported smoke, a
