A comparison of age-related deficits in memory and frontal lobe function following oral lorazepam administration.

Differential responses on cognitive function of young (18-45 years, n = 17) and elderly (60-75 years, n = 9) subjects were compared before and after a challenge with lorazepam (2 mg oral) or placebo. Tests of memory and frontal lobe function were administered to determine the specificity of the amnesic deficit produced and the interaction of drug and the aging brain. Anterograde amnesia, as assessed by recall of a word list, was noted in both groups and was greater in the elderly. Whereas lorazepam produced only impaired recall in the young group, the elderly group manifested a further range o

Cognitive flexibility and the risk of anorexia nervosa: An investigation using self-report and neurocognitive assessments.

Impaired cognitive flexibility has been suggested as a risk factor for the development of anorexia nervosa (AN). The current study aimed to 1) investigate cognitive flexibility in people at various levels of risk of AN; and 2) compare people with a history of AN to people at different levels of risk of AN in cognitive flexibility. The sample comprised of 262 community participants (79% female) and 36 participants with a lifetime diagnosis of AN (97.2% female) aged between 18 and 64 years old. Participants completed self-report (the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale short-form version, the Eating

Sensitivity to reward and punishment and the prefrontal cortex in major depression.

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) show neuropsychological impairments, including deficient executive functions and altered sensitivity to reward and punishment. METHODS: Executive functions (Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, WCST) and contingency learning based on the cumulative effect of reward and punishment (Iowa Gambling Test, IGT) were assessed in 30 medicated patients with unipolar MDD and in 20 healthy control volunteers. In the classic ABCD version of the IGT, advantageous decks are characterized by immediate small reward but even smaller future punishment. In the m

Effects of Parkinson disease on two putative nondeclarative learning tasks: probabilistic classification and gambling.

OBJECTIVE: To assess performance on two nondeclarative (implicit) memory tasks of Parkinson disease (PD) patients without dementia in the earlier or later stages of the disease (Hoehn and Yahr Scale scores of 1-2.5 or 3-4, respectively). BACKGROUND: Different subtypes of nondeclarative memory appear to depend on different components of frontostriatal circuitry. Performance on a probabilistic classification learning (PCL) task was impaired by striatal damage (eg, in PD or Huntington disease) but not by circumscribed frontal lobe damage. On the other hand, performance on the Iowa Gambling Task

Effect of Turner's syndrome and X-linked imprinting on cognitive status: analysis based on pedigree data.

The effects of a monosomy of either the maternally or paternally derived X chromosome in Turner's syndrome (TS) on general neurocognitive status and some executive abilities were assessed using the maximum likelihood estimators for pedigree data. This method increases the power of analysis by accounting for the effect of background heritable variation on a trait. The sample comprised 42 females with regular non-mosaic X monosomy and their non-affected relatives. Wechsler neurocognitive scores and several executive function tests' scores, including the Behaviour Dyscontrol Scale (BDS-2), the Wi

The relationship between sleep quality and cognitive performance in a sample of Colombian adults.

Sleep plays a vital role in cognitive regulation, memory consolidation and brain health. In Colombia, sleep patterns may be influenced by cultural and socioeconomic factors such as co-sleeping, occupational stress and limited healthcare access, which can exacerbate sleep-related disorders like sleep apnoea. This study examined the relationship between objectively measured sleep quality and cognitive performance in Colombian adults with sleep apnoea. We hypothesised that poorer sleep quality, which is characterised by lower efficiency and more apnoea (hypopnoea events), would be associated with

Effect of transcranial direct current stimulation on decision making and cognitive flexibility in gambling disorder.

Decision making and cognitive flexibility are two components of cognitive control that play a critical role in the emergence, persistence, and relapse of gambling disorder. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been reported to enhance decision making and cognitive flexibility in healthy volunteers and individuals with addictive disorders. In this triple-blind randomized sham-controlled parallel study, we aimed to determine whether tDCS over DLPFC would modulate decision making and cognitive flexibility in individuals with gambling d

Cognitive flexibility and its electrophysiological correlates in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Motor symptoms in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) have been related to changes in frontostriatal brain networks. These changes may also give rise to alterations in cognitive flexibility. However, conclusive evidence for altered cognitive flexibility in patients with GTS is still lacking. Here, we meta-analyzed data from 20 neuropsychological studies that investigated cognitive flexibility in GTS using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Results revealed medium-sized GTS-related performance deficits, which were significantly modulated by age: Whilst being substantial in children and ad

Executive functioning in anorexia nervosa patients and their unaffected relatives.

Formal genetic studies suggested a substantial genetic influence for anorexia nervosa (AN), but currently results are inconsistent. The use of the neurocognitive endophenotype approach may facilitate our understanding of the AN pathophysiology. We investigated decision-making, set-shifting and planning in AN patients (n=29) and their unaffected relatives (n=29) compared to healthy probands (n=29) and their relatives (n=29). The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), the Tower of Hanoi (ToH) and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) were administered. Concordance rates and heritability indices were also ca

Disturbances of motivational balance in chronic schizophrenia during decision-making tasks.

AIM: The role of feedback processing in decision-making has been assessed in psychiatric patients using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Although impaired performance on the IGT has been documented extensively in schizophrenia patients, the neuropsychological mechanisms underlying the performance deficits have not yet been elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the neuropsychological origins of impaired decision-making in schizophrenia patients using various versions of the IGT. METHODS: Thirty chronic schizophrenia patients and 33 healthy subjects underwent computerized

Neuropsychological profiles and subsequent diagnoses of children with early life insults: do caregiver reports suggest deficits?

Many types of early life events can cause cerebral dysfunction; however, not all children have medical records or neurologic imaging documenting brain injuries. Rather, many neuropsychologists base their findings on caregiver reports describing possible early brain insults. Neuropsychological studies suggest that brief perinatal cyanosis and/or childhood neglect may negatively affect cognitive functioning. Should the mere suggestion of these events from caregiver reports be enough to suggest deficits? This study examines four groups of children: those with (1) reported nuchal cord compression

Correlations between Cognitive Impairments and Employment Status in Patients with Diffuse Axonal Injury.

Patients with diffuse axonal injury (DAI) may initially present with prominent physical impairments, but their cognitive dysfunctions are more persistent and are attributable to later unemployment. In this study, we analyzed how the findings of early and delayed neuropsychological assessments correlated with employment outcome of patients with DAI. A total of 56 patients with DAI without motor or visual dysfunction were included in this study. The neuropsychological battery consisted of the Wechsler Adult Intelligent Scale - Revised (WAIS-R), Wechsler Memory Scale - Revised (WMS-R), Trail Maki

The efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation with RehaCom programme in schizophrenia patients. The role of selected genetic polymorphisms in successful cognitive rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenic patients present cognitive dysfunctions which are regarded to be one of endophenotypical markers predisposing to schizophrenia. Currently, schizophrenia can be treated as a neurodegenerative and neurodeveloping disease with genetic background. OBJECTIVE: Assessment of the possible positive effect of neuropsychological rehabilitation in schizophrenia, in patients presenting cognitive dysfunctions. An additional aim was to verify the hypothesis that some genetic polymorphisms can be a prognostic factor for success in neuropsychological rehabilitation. MATERIAL AND M
