Do Sleep Problems Explain the Association Between Work Stress and the Trajectories of Work Ability From Midlife to Pensionable Age?

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether mid-life work stress, defined as job strain and effort-reward imbalance (ERI), predicts work ability trajectories observed 12 years preceding the individual pensionable age. In addition, the role of sleep problems as a mediator in these associations was examined. METHODS: Survey data were collected from 2707 Finnish municipal employees. RESULTS: Identified work ability trajectories were "stable excellent," "stable good," "moderate," and "low decreasing." Baseline job strain and ERI were associated with a greater likelihood of belonging to impaired work

Construct validity of the Assessment of Work Performance (AWP).

The instrument Assessment of Work Performance (AWP 1.1) can be used to assess an individual's skills during work performance - how efficient and appropriate a client performs a work task. The instrument is currently used by over 300 assessors working in a variety of work rehabilitation settings in Sweden, and it has been used with over 10,000 clients. In this study, the construct validity of the AWP 1.1 was tested with 364 assessments of clients with a variety of various work-related problems assessed by six occupational therapists in a Social Insurance Office in Sweden between 2004 and 2005.

A comparison between two systems for pre-employment medical assessment in the Royal Netherlands Army by a randomized, controlled study.

In 1998, the basic medical requirements for the Royal Netherlands Army were introduced as a standard for the assessment of the medical suitability of military personnel, consisting of 43 dichotomized points of judgment. This system replaced the old physical capacity, upper limbs, locomotion, hearing, eyesight, and emotional and mental state system, based on the detection of diseases and infirmities. We compared the two different examination systems for their ability to identify suitable recruits. For the latter purpose, we used the two operational measures of availability and health care costs

Expert review of an approach to functional capacity evaluation.

Functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a widely used tool in work rehabilitation, despite the limited examination of the soundness of its measurement properties. This paper outlines the development of a new approach to FCE, the GAPP FCE, and reports on the findings of an expert review of aspects of its content validity and technical adequacy and how it meets established test criteria. Five expert occupational therapists reviewed the materials of the GAPP FCE then completed a questionnaire related to the content validity, technical adequacy and safety, reliability, validity, practicality and u

Energy expenditure of agricultural workers in an area of endemic schistosomiasis in the Sudan.

Indices of physiological performance in the field under natural working conditions were measured in 46 Sudanese Gezira villagers and related to exercise performance under controlled laboratory conditions. The effect of Schistosoma mansoni infection on energy expenditure in the field was also investigated. A highly significant positive association between the maximal aerobic power output (VO2 max) measured in the laboratory with energy expenditure in the field (r = + 0.51, p less than 0.001) and with changes in body weight during work (r = 0.41, p less than 0.01) was found.
