Construct validity and test-retest reliability of the World Mental Health Japan version of the World Health Organization Health and Work Performance Questionnaire Short Version: a preliminary study.

The aim of the study was to investigate test-retest reliability and construct validity of the World Mental Health Japan (WMHJ) version of World Health Organization Health and Performance Questionnaire (WHO-HPQ) short version according the COSMIN standard. We conducted two consecutive surveys of 102 full-time employees recruited through an Internet survey company in Japan, with a two-week interval in 2018. We calculated Pearson's correlation (r) of measures of the WHO-HPQ with other presenteeism scales (Stanford Presenteeism Scale, Work Functioning Impairment Scale, and perceived relative prese

The World Health Organization's Disease Outbreak News: A retrospective database.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notifies the global community about disease outbreaks through the Disease Outbreak News (DON). These online reports tell important stories about both outbreaks themselves and the high-level decision making that governs information sharing during public health emergencies. However, they have been used only minimally in global health scholarship to date. Here, we collate all 2,789 of these reports from their first use through the start of the Covid-19 pandemic (January 1996 to December 2019), and develop an annotated database of the subjective and often incons

Drugs and bruxism: A study in the World Health Organization's pharmacovigilance database.

Bruxism is a movement disorder of uncertain aetiology. Beside local peripheral and central psychological factors, drugs were suspected. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) global pharmacovigilance database, Vigibase®, we investigated through disproportionality analyses potential associations between exposure to drugs and bruxism reports. All reports of bruxism in adults between 01/01/2000 and 31/12/2022 were included. Results are expressed as reporting odds ratio (ROR). Among the 564 reports of bruxism, an association was found with eight antidepressants (first sertraline followed by esc

World Health Organization Risk Drinking Levels Among Mandated College Students: Associations With Alcohol Use, Mental Health, and Academic Performance.

OBJECTIVE: World Health Organization (WHO) risk drinking levels (i.e., low, moderate, high, or very high risk) have been used as a drinking-reduction endpoint in clinical trials. Yet, prior work has not attempted to quantify reductions in WHO risk levels among mandated students, who may also benefit from reduced drinking. We sought to validate WHO risk drinking levels in differentiating students' alcohol-related outcomes, depressive symptoms, and academic performance. Defining risk via typical drinks per drinking day versus drinks per day was compared, and gender differences were examined. METH

Newborn Resuscitation Skills in Health Care Providers at a Zambian Tertiary Center, and Comparison to World Health Organization Standards.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is a leading cause of early neonatal death. In 2013, 32% of neonatal deaths in Zambia were attributable to birth asphyxia and trauma. Basic, timely interventions are key to improving outcomes. However, data from the World Health Organization suggest that resuscitation is often not initiated, or is conducted suboptimally. Currently, there are little data on the quality of newborn resuscitation in the context of a tertiary center in a lower-middle income country. We aimed to measure the competencies of clinical practitioners responsible for newborn resuscitation. METH

Categories and health impacts of intimate partner violence in the World Health Organization multi-country study on women's health and domestic violence.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) damages health and is costly to families and society. Individuals experience different forms and combinations of IPV; better understanding of the respective health effects of these can help develop differentiated responses. This study explores the associations of different categories of IPV on women's mental and physical health. METHODS: Using data from the World Health Organization (WHO) Multi-Country Study on Women's Health and Domestic Violence, multilevel mixed effects logistic regression modelling was used to analyse associations between catego

The new World Health Organization-European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer classification for cutaneous lymphomas: a practical marriage of two giants.

Following consensus meetings of the two parent organizations, a new World Health Organization-European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (WHO-EORTC) classification for primary cutaneous lymphomas has recently been published. This important development will now end the ongoing debate as to which of these was the preferred classification. The new classification will facilitate more uniformity in diagnosis, management and treatment of cutaneous lymphomas. In particular, it provides a useful distinction between indolent and more aggressive types of primary cutaneous lymphoma and pr

Sources of Stress and Their Associations With Mental Disorders Among College Students: Results of the World Health Organization World Mental Health Surveys International College Student Initiative.

The college years are stressful for many students. Identifying the sources of stress and their relative importance in leading to clinically significant emotional problems may assist in the development of targeted stress management interventions. The current report examines the distribution and associations of perceived stress across major life areas with 12-month prevalence of common mental disorders in a cross-national sample of first-year college students. The 20,842 respondents were from 24 universities in 9 countries that participated in the World Health Organization World Mental Health In

Early cannabis use and estimated risk of later onset of depression spells: Epidemiologic evidence from the population-based World Health Organization World Mental Health Survey Initiative.

Early-onset cannabis use is widespread in many countries and might cause later onset of depression. Sound epidemiologic data across countries are missing. The authors estimated the suspected causal association that links early-onset (age <17 years) cannabis use with later-onset (age > or =17 years) risk of a depression spell, using data on 85,088 subjects from 17 countries participating in the population-based World Health Organization World Mental Health Survey Initiative (2001-2005). In all surveys, multistage household probability samples were evaluated with a fully structured diagnostic in

The World Health Organization's work and recommendations for improving the health of trans and gender diverse people.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) is guided by its global programme of work and the goal that a billion more people have universal health coverage (UHC). To achieve UHC, access for those most vulnerable must be guaranteed and prioritized. WHO is committed to developing evidence-based guidance to work towards UHC for trans and gender diverse (TGD) people. This commentary describes WHO's work related to TGD people over the last decade. DISCUSSION: In 2011, WHO developed guidelines for the prevention and treatment of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in men who have

Not Every Country Can Absorb a Shock: Unequal Capacity to Withstand World Health Organization Aid Cuts.

External health aid is contracting sharply, and this moment is often framed as a stress test of health system resilience. This perspective argues that it is equally a stress test of global health ethics and governance: When external actors withdraw from essential services, they are not merely responding to fiscal constraints-they are shaping who loses care. In 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) projected a 30%-40% decline in external health aid to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and urged governments to protect essential services, integrate programs into primary healthcare, and

Sexual Dysfunction with Antipsychotics: Emerging Clues from a Disproportionality Analysis of the World Health Organization VigiBase.

INTRODUCTION: Antipsychotic-associated sexual adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are well known in clinical practice, although efforts to understand differences between antipsychotics and distinct types of sexual ADRs are limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess and prioritize the profile of each antipsychotic regarding sexual ADRs reporting, and to account for potential confounders. METHODS: We used VigiBase® to conduct a case/non-case study using a customized clinically guided search strategy of antipsychotic-related sexual ADRs. Expansion of the world health organization (WHO) gastric neuroendocrine tumor classification: introducing types 4 and 5.

The 6th Edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Digestive System Tumours has introduced two new categories of gastric neuroendocrine tumors, reflecting recent data on subtypes that do not conform to the three established subtypes: type 1 (associated with autoimmune gastritis), type 2 (associated with Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome) and type 3 (sporadic). The new type 4 category is exceptionally rare and is caused by endogenous dysfunction of parietal cell proton pumps, potentially secondary to mutation of ATP4A. Type 5 gastric NETs are caused by chronic pharmacologic inhibition

Aspergillus fumigatus-a systematic review to inform the World Health Organization priority list of fungal pathogens.

Recognizing the growing global burden of fungal infections, the World Health Organization established a process to develop a priority list of fungal pathogens (FPPL). In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the epidemiology and impact of invasive infections caused by Aspergillus fumigatus to inform the first FPPL. The pre-specified criteria of mortality, inpatient care, complications and sequelae, antifungal susceptibility, risk factors, preventability, annual incidence, global distribution, and emergence were used to search for relevant articles between 1 January 2016 and 10 June 2021
