Assessment of narrative writing by Persian-speaking students with hearing impairments.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have highlighted that narrative skill is critical to the development of the literacy skills by children. Children with cochlear implants (CI) and hearing aids (HA) may have problems in narrative development compared to peers with healthy hearing (HH). There is no exact data about the narrative writing ability of Persian-speaking students who are hearing-impaired. This study was undertaken to compare the microstructure and macrostructure scores for narrative writing of Persian-speaking students who are hearing-impaired and peers with HH. DESIGN: This was a cross-sec

Stress Reduction Through a Brief Writing Intervention With Women in Jail.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility/acceptability of writing as a stress reduction strategy with incarcerated women. METHODS: The authors implemented a writing intervention in which six women wrote on topics of their choosing for 20 minutes on 5 consecutive days. Feasibility was assessed with investigator field notes; daily post-writing evaluations assessed intervention acceptability. The study also assessed the continuation of writing at 1-month postintervention and acceptability of instruments for evaluation of future interventions. RESULTS: Implementation barriers were minimal; participa

Improvement of Primary Writing Tremor in Parkinson's Disease with Carbidopa/Levodopa.

BACKGROUND: Primary writing tremor is a task-specific phenomenon that has been described as variants of essential tremor or dystonia. PHENOMENOLOGY SHOWN: We describe the case of a 63-year-old female who initially had primary writing tremor, later developed Parkinson's disease, and once initiated on carbidopa/levodopa had improvement in her parkinsonism and her writing tremor. EDUCATIONAL VALUE: As neither essential tremor nor typical brachial dystonia respond to carbidopa/levodopa, our case documents that at least some cases of primary writing tremor are not variants of either dystonia or e

[Reading and writing disorder (RWD) - criteria for a speech therapist intervention].

BACKGROUND: Children with specific language impairments carry a high risk for the development of reading and writing disorders. While deficits in phonological encoding have been well studied, there has been little research in the german speaking world into the possible correlation between linguistic ability and reading or writing skills in elementary school children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using a group of 27 children between the ages of 8 and 11, a battery of tests were performed to research possible correlations between linguistic ability and reading and writing ability in elementary school

Chinese writing function in patients with left versus right putaminal hemorrhage.

This study was designed to explore the Chinese writing function of patients with subcortical stroke. Two cohorts of patient subjects with either the left or the right subcortical strokes, mainly putaminal hemorrhagic strokes, and one group of normal controls participated in the study. All participants received a writing test battery including the three aspects of writing function, that is, Spontaneous Writing, Writing to Dictation, and Writing from Copy, as well as a battery of non-writing linguistic tests. Comparing with normal controls revealed that writing function change occurred in both p

[Writing disorder using a word processor: role of the left hand].

A young female secretary developed a writing disorder, exclusively expressed when using a word processor, following an ischemic vascular event involving the insula and the right posterior parietal region. There was no disturbance of laterality. The neurological examination, completed by neuropsychological tests eliminated any persistent phasic or gnostic disorders. The analysis of the text produced revealed abnormalities leading to the conclusion that the left hand was responsible for all the errors observed. A sensorimotor integration disorder produced a melokinetic apraxia which appeared to

Write Together: Using Haptic Coupling to Enhance Children's Handwriting.

The acquisition of handwriting is a challenging task for children, requiring consistent exercise throughout primary school. Many children struggle to develop fluent handwriting, which in turn may impact their academic success and affect their self-esteem. The emergence of new technologies supporting handwriting exercise and allowing active interactions with educators, caregivers, and/or peers has led researchers to explore the potential use of these new tools. Studies show that haptic technology and exploiting experts' trajectory feedback may improve students' performance better than one-way i

Effects of grading rubrics on EFL learners' writing in an EMI setting.

Despite considerable evidence that supports the use of grading rubrics (GRs) as tools for written corrective feedback, there is a paucity of research that investigates which of the different types of GRs best develops learners' International English Language Testing System (IELTS) writing scores in English as a medium of instruction (EMI)-contested settings. This study attempted to explore which rubric types (i.e., holistic, ESL composition profile, correction code, and IELTS) best assist English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in writing proficiency and which type leads to improving IELT

Disability terminology: the use of "disability," "disorder," and "illness" in academic writing.

PURPOSE: The ways in which words are used to describe and discuss people with disabilities has long been an area of social concern. Previous research has demonstrated that language can overtly and subtly influence cognitions and perceptions of individuals, but there is less research on how language relates to perceptions of individuals with disabilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A content analysis of 236 peer-reviewed articles was performed to explore differences in the frequency of the use of "disability," "disorder," and "illness" in academic articles related to eight common conditions: deafn

Reactivity of the triple task on writing processes and product in adults with dyslexia.

INTRODUCTION: The triple task (TT) is a method for assessing the dynamics of writing processes. It involves three tasks in one: writing a text, responding to a sound, and reporting the process. Previous research has mostly shown that the TT does not affect the writing process or the product. However, individuals with dyslexia often show difficulties in tasks that require organization, automation, integration of multiple processes, inhibition, and shifting/cognitive flexibility. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate whether TT affects the writing process and written product differe

Novel insights into the effects of levodopa on the up- and downstrokes of writing sequences.

Motor control of automatized and overlearned sequences, such as writing, is affected in Parkinson's disease (PD), impacting patients' daily life. Medication effects on motor performance are not only task-specific, but also variable within tasks. The nature of this variance is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether medication affects writing sequences differently when producing up- or downstrokes. Writing was assessed in healthy controls (HC) (N = 31) and PD (N = 32), when ON and OFF medication in a randomized order (interspersed by two months). Subjects wrote a sequential patte

Learning Disabilities in Reading and Writing and Type of Delivery in Twin Births.

The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between the type of delivery (vaginal or caesarean), as a risk factor, and the likelihood of having learning disabilities in reading (reading accuracy) and writing (phonetic and visual orthography), controlling for the interaction and/or confounding effect of gestational, obstetric, and neonatal variables (maternal age at delivery, gestational age, foetal presentation, Apgar 1, and newborn weight) among six-year-old children born in twin births. In this retrospective cohort study, the exposed and non-exposed cohorts consisted of children bo

A preliminary examination of expressive writing in boys with isolated orofacial clefts.

BACKGROUND: Children with isolated cleft of the lip and/or palate (iCL/P) are at a higher risk for language and reading issues. The current pilot study evaluated concurrent writing skills of children with iCL/P compared to unaffected participants with average (uAR) and impaired (uIR) reading. It was hypothesized that children with iCL/P would perform lower than age-expectations. METHODS: Twenty-three males, aged 8-11 years old, were recruited through clinics, local advertisements, and state dyslexia groups (iCL/P = 7, uAR = 8, uIR = 8). Group differences on measures of cognitive processes and

Universal Screening for Prevention of Reading, Writing, and Math Disabilities in Spanish.

The purpose of this study was to describe a Spanish protocol that includes reading, writing, and math Curriculum-Based Measures (CBMs) aimed at early detection of students at risk of presenting learning disabilities (LD). Early identification of LD is a critical component of the Response to Intervention (RtI) model. In early grades, the screening of foundational skills mentioned above can provide a data-based guideline for identifying students requiring a more intensive response-based intervention before starting elementary school. We designed different CBMs based on indicators of basic early

If case reports be the food of knowledge, write on: our Cases of the Quarter.

The value of publishing case reports has long been debated and the arguments are summarised. Last year, to encourage trainees, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh's Senior Fellows Club inaugurated an annual prize for the best case report or case series published in the Journal of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh by a doctor in training. Some of the highlights of last year's entries are reviewed, commented on and developed. They include cases of myelofibrosis and cherubism due to secondary hyperparathyroidism from renal failure; reversible blindness in diabetic ketoacidosis
