UV-B damages eyes of barnacle larvae and impairs their photoresponses and settlement success.

The impact of enhanced UV-B radiation on marine ecosystems due to ozone depletion has caused growing global concern. Barnacle larvae have evolved complex photoreceptors and elaborate phototactic behaviors, which enable them to identify suitable habitats for feeding and settlement. For the first time, we demonstrate that environmentally realistic levels of UV-B radiation can induce ocular damage in barnacle larvae, thereby impairing the phototactic behavior of naupliar larvae and reducing settlement success of cypris larvae. Significant disruptions of rhabdomeres (the photosensitive structures

Assessment of metal-associated health risk in different trophic levels in tropical estuary on the southeast coast of India.

Metal contamination in coastal and marine ecosystems has become a significant global concern due to its hazardous characteristics, environmental persistence, and ability to bioaccumulate in aquatic ecosystems. This poses a serious threat to the environment and the health of humans worldwide. To address these concerns, this study estimated the concentrations of metals in various trophic levels, including phytoplankton, zooplankton, bivalve, and fish. Monthly sampling was carried out in Pondicherry Fishing Harbor (PFH) and Pondicherry Open Sea (POS) between January 2017 and December 2018. The va

Physiological control of bioluminescence in a deep-sea planktonic worm, Tomopteris helgolandica.

Tomopteris helgolandica Greeff 1879 (Tomopteridae) is a transparent holoplanktonic polychaete that can emit a bright light. In this study, we investigated the emission pattern and control of this deep-sea worm's luminescence. Potassium chloride depolarisation applied on anaesthetised specimens triggered a maximal yellow light emission from specific parapodial sites, suggesting that a nervous control pathway was involved. Pharmacological screening revealed a sensitivity to carbachol, which was confirmed by a dose-light response associated with a change in the light emission pattern, where physi

Phosphate scarcity governs methane production in the global open ocean.

The observed supersaturation of methane (CH4) in open-ocean surface waters implies widespread CH4 production within the well-oxygenated mixed layer, driving emissions of this potent greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. The dominant CH4 production pathway that explains this phenomenon remains poorly understood, although candidates include production during photosynthesis, zooplankton metabolism, and dissolved organic matter cycling. Here, we construct a data-assimilating model of the open-ocean CH4 cycle to test which hypothesized mechanism is most consistent with the observed global CH4 distribut

Comparative effects of the two copper compounds: Copper chloride and copper sulfate on bioaccumulation, fecundity, and stress responses in the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana.

To evaluate the toxicological impacts of the two copper formscopper chloride (CuCl₂) and copper sulfate (CuSO4), on the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana, we examined the bioaccumulation, life cycle parameters (survival and hatching rates), reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant enzymatic activities (e.g., glutathione S-transferase [GST], glutathione peroxidase [GPx], and superoxide dismutase [SOD]) with transcriptional expression of heat shock protein (hsp) genes in response to CuCl₂ and CuSO4. Higher accumulation rates of CuCl₂ and CuSO4 were observed in concentration- and time-dependent

Insights into the molecular response of Dioithona rigida to selenium nanoparticles: de novo transcriptome assembly and differential gene expression analysis.

The impact of contaminants on Copepod sp. and its molecular response is least explored, despite their abundance and dominance among invertebrates in aquatic environments. In the present investigation, Dioithona rigida, a cyclopoid zooplankton, was treated with selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) to determine the associated biochemical changes, and the chronic exposure effects were recorded using transcriptomic analysis. It was found that, SeNPs were acutely toxic with a lethal dose 50% of 140.9 mg/L. The de novo assembled transcriptome of the copepod comprised 81,814 transcripts, which underwent su

Synergistic effect of chloroquine and copper to the euryhaline rotifer Proales similis.

Chloroquine (CQ) has been widely used for many years against malaria and various viral diseases. Its important use and high potential to being persistent make it of particular concern for ecotoxicological studies. Here, we evaluated the toxicity of CQ alone and in combination with copper (Cu) to the euryhaline rotifer Proales similis. All experiments were carried out using chronic toxicity reproductive five-day tests and an application factor (AF) of 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 by multiplying the 24-h LC50 values of CQ (4250 µg/L) and Cu (68 µg/L), which were administered in solution. Influence of dissolved organic matter character on mercury incorporation by planktonic organisms: an experimental study using oligotrophic water from Patagonian lakes.

Ligands present in dissolved organic matter (DOM) form complexes with inorganic divalent mercury (Hg2+) affecting its bioavailability in pelagic food webs. This investigation addresses the influence of a natural gradient of DOM present in Patagonian lakes on the bioaccumulation of Hg2+ (the prevailing mercury species in the water column of these lakes) by the algae Cryptomonas erosa and the zooplankters Brachionus calyciflorus and Boeckella antiqua. Hg2+ accumulation was studied through laboratory experiments using natural water of four oligotrophic Patagonian lakes amended witht'97Hg2+. The b

Dietary and waterborne mercury accumulation by yellow perch: a field experiment.

It is well accepted that the majority of monomethylmercury (MMHg) in fish originates in their food; however, the additional contribution of water as a source to fish MMHg levels remains unclear. We used isotope enriched mercury (Hg) in a controlled field experiment to quantify the uptake of Hg from ingested and aqueous sources by young-of-year yellow perch (Perca flavescens). Water and zooplankton from a lake that had received (202)Hg-enriched additions (called spike Hg) for 7 y during a whole-ecosystem loading study (METAALICUS) provided natural, low-level Hg exposure. We achieved separation

Stable isotopes and metals and metalloids in the smallest Megamouth Shark (Megachasma pelagios) reported to date from the Atlantic Ocean.

The Megamouth Shark is a circumtropically distributed filter-feeding species with only some records from the Atlantic Ocean available to date. In this study, a very young specimen, possibly a neonate, found floating off Pedra do Sal Beach, Piauí, Brazil, in 2018, was analyzed for stable isotopes and metals and metalloids. This research opens a window for investigating aspects of the biology of this scarcely studied shark at this developmental stage in the Western Equatorial Atlantic Ocean. Stable isotope values were δ13C = -18.66 ± 0.15‰ and δ15N = 5.93 ± 0.09‰, likely reflecting maternal isot

Phenolic Secondary Metabolites in Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. (Droseraceae).

Background: Aldrovanda vesiculosa L. is a small aquatic plant that produces snap traps for capturing zooplankton prey. Aldrovanda belongs to the family Droseraceae, which is well known for the production of secondary metabolites (especially naphthoquinones). However, compared to other species in this family (Drosera and Dionaea), A. vesiculosa has been very poorly studied in terms of metabolites. The Aim: To fill this gap in knowledge, we investigated what secondary metabolites are present in the shoots of these plants. A hypothesis was tested stating that there are more metabolites in the you

Biochemical and behavioral effects induced by cocaine exposure to Daphnia magna.

Illicit drugs and their metabolites have been identified as emerging aquatic pollutants. Cocaine (COC) is one of the most used illicit drug worldwide. After human consumption, COC enters the aquatic ecosystems, where it is commonly detected in ng L-1 concentration range. Although a number of studies have shown that the exposure to environmental concentrations of COC can induce diverse biochemical, molecular and histological effects on aquatic organisms, the information of COC-induced behavioral alterations is scant. Thus, the present study aimed at exploring both biochemical and behavioral eff

ToxR of Vibrio cholerae affects biofilm, rugosity and survival with Acanthamoeba castellanii.

BACKGROUND: Vibrio cholerae causes the diarrheal disease cholera and utilizes different survival strategies in aquatic environments. V. cholerae can survive as free-living or in association with zooplankton and can build biofilm and rugose colonies. The bacterium expresses cholera toxin (CT) and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) as the main virulence factors. These factors are co-regulated by a transcriptional regulator ToxR, which modulates expression of outer membrane proteins (OmpU) and (OmpT). The aims of this study were to disclose the role of ToxR in expression of OmpU and OmpT, biofilm and

Trophic niche overlap between native and non-native fishes in central Anatolian lakes, Türkiye.

The Central Anatolian region of Türkiye exhibits exceptionally high freshwater fish diversity and endemism and is increasingly exposed to the introduction of non-native taxa. We examined the diet composition, prey selectivity and interspecific dietary overlap among eight native and five non-native fish species across seven lakes in Central Anatolia. Fish were sampled using multimesh gill nets and fyke nets, and their stomach contents were identified. In addition, zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrate communities were quantified to evaluate prey selectivity patterns. Aquatic insects were th

Natural variation in host feeding behaviors impacts host disease and pathogen transmission potential.

Animals ranging from mosquitoes to humans often vary their feeding behavior when infected or merely exposed to pathogens. These so-called "sickness behaviors" are part of the innate immune response with many consequences, including avoiding orally transmitted pathogens. Fully understanding the role of this ubiquitous behavior in host defense and pathogen evolution requires a quantitative account of its impact on host and pathogen fitness across environmentally relevant contexts. Here, we use a zooplankton host and fungal pathogen as a case study to ask if infection-mediated feeding behaviors v

An annotated checklist of free-living Copepoda (Crustacea) of Iraq: diversity, distribution, and biogeographical affinities.

Copepods are a major component of aquatic zooplankton and play essential roles in ecosystem functioning, yet their diversity in Iraq has remained poorly documented and taxonomically fragmented. This study presents the first comprehensive checklist of free-living Copepoda in Iraq, based on published records spanning 1921-2025. Only free-living taxa of Calanoida, Cyclopoida, and Harpacticoida were included, excluding parasitic forms and unidentified larval stages. A total of 51 confirmed species were compiled, comprising 26 Calanoida, 20 Cyclopoida, and 5 Harpacticoida. These include 22 freshwat

Cadmium(II) Loading Exacerbates the Negative Effects of Nanobiochar on Daphnia magna: Evidence from Toxicity Test and Multiomics Analysis.

Micro- (M-BC) and nanobiochar (N-BC) particles exhibit strong environmental mobility and superior adsorption capacity for heavy metals. This raises concerns regarding their ecological risks to aquatic ecosystems. However, systematic studies on the toxicity of contaminant-laden M-BC and N-BC to aquatic biota remain scarce. Here, we prepared the cadmium (Cd(II))-loaded complexes (M-BC-Cd and N-BC-Cd), identified the acute toxicity of M-BC-Cd and N-BC-Cd on zooplankton Daphnia magna, and emphasized the response in D. magna induced by N-BC and N-BC-Cd. The results indicated that N-BC alone induced

Regional fidelity vs dispersal of capelin (Mallotus villosus) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, inferred from otolith chemistry.

Capelin (Mallotus villosus), a key forage fish in the Northwest Atlantic, links zooplankton to predators including commercial fishes, seabirds, and marine mammals, yet its life-cycle connectivity in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL) remain poorly understood. Between 2022 and 2024, otoliths from 927 individuals collected during and after spawning were analysed by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and seven trace elements (Li, B, Mg, K, Zn, Sr, Ba) were used to discriminate three chemically distinct regions within the GSL. Early-life regional origin was inferr

Shipboard trials of an ozone-based ballast water treatment system.

Legislation introduced by the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) has focused primarily on standards defining successful treatments designed to remove invasive species entrained in ballast water. An earlier shipboard study found that ozone introduced into salt water ballast resulted in the formation of bromine compounds, measured as total residual oxidants (TRO) that were toxic to both bacteria and plankton. However, the diffuser system employed to deliver ozone to the ballast water tanks resulted in patchiness in TRO distribution and toxicity to entrained organisms. In th
