BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: There are concerns about the effectiveness of head lice treatments because of increasing resistance and safety. This trial compared the safety and efficacy of a suffocant-based head lice treatment to malathion in children.
METHODS: The trial used strict entry criteria, standardized treatment and assessment regimens, sibling treatment where appropriate and a primary efficacy end-point defined as the absence of live head lice.
RESULTS: A total of 216 children were enrolled. One hundred and sixty-nine were per-protocol. The suffocant was significantly more effective than

In the second part of their review the authors focus on palaeopathological studies, performed in mummified tissues, with reference to infectious diseases. The analysis of samples obtained from both natural and artificial mummies may provide, in some favourable events, a more complete knowledge of these findings in comparison to information obtained from only comprehensive examination of the skeleton. The acquired data enable us to understand not only the diseases which afflicted mankind, but also dietary and hygiene conditions of ancient populations. We report knowledge acquired regarding some

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of and assess risk factors associated with head lice infections (pediculosis) in children from government primary schools in Victoria, Australia.
METHODS: Between May and October 2001, children were selected by clustered random sampling of schools and classes, then examined for head lice using hair conditioner and a fine-toothed head lice comb. There were 1838 children screened from 16 primary schools. Risk factors evaluated included metropolitan or rural residence, school class, gender and hair length.
RESULTS: Thirteen percent of children (239/1838)

A clinical and entomological trial was carried out in 88 head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) infested children treated with a single dose of 1% permethrin shampoo or lotion. The sex distribution was 47 males an 41 females with ages ranging between 5 and 14 year olds. In order to assess the efficiency of treatments, search for adult forms, nymphs and eggs (nits) of the parasite was performed in each of the children, before and after treatment (30 minutes, 7 days and 21 days). The entomological evaluations consisted in stereoscopic and microscopic examinations of a mean of 12 hair samples tak

BACKGROUND: Pediculosis capitis, also known as head lice, is a common problem that affects individuals of different socio-economic backgrounds. Permethrin is generally considered the first-line treatment option for head lice.
AIMS: The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the therapeutic effects of three different methods of permethrin treatment for head lice.
METHOD: A parallel, randomized clinical trial was conducted on 157 patients with head lice. The participants underwent eye examination and dry combing by a trained professional. The subjects were randomly divided into th

Ivermectin has emerged as very promising pediculicide, particularly in cases of resistance to commonly used pediculicides. Recently, however, the first field-evolved ivermectin-resistance in lice was reported. To gain insight into the mechanisms underlying ivermectin-resistance, we both looked for mutations in the ivermectin-target site (GluCl) and searched the entire proteome for potential new loci involved in resistance from laboratory susceptible and ivermectin-selected resistant body lice. Polymorphism analysis of cDNA GluCl showed no non-silent mutations. Proteomic analysis identified 22

Despite civilisation development and the easy access to pediculicides, head pediculosis remains still the social, hygienic and medical problem. In the years 2007 - 2009 in children's homes in selected provinces of Poland the questionnaire survey on the occurrence of head pediculosis and its control have been conducted. From 127 orphanages 61 (48.03%) sent back fulfilled questionnaire. The infestation level ranged from 4.63% (Swietokrzyskie Province, 2009) until 17.63% (Mazowieckie Province 2007) in the surveyed children's homes. The most head pediculosis cases were observed among girls 6 - 12

Parasites can be used as unique markers to investigate host evolutionary history, independent of host data. Here we show that modern human head lice, Pediculus humanus, are composed of two ancient lineages, whose origin predates modern Homo sapiens by an order of magnitude (ca. 1.18 million years). One of the two louse lineages has a worldwide distribution and appears to have undergone a population bottleneck ca. 100,000 years ago along with its modern H. sapiens host. Phylogenetic and population genetic data suggest that the other lineage, found only in the New World, has remained isolated fr

Guidelines for the treatment of patients with sexually transmitted infection are developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after consultation with a group of professionals knowledgeable in the field. This article briefly introduces various infections, reviews new diagnostic information, and presents the latest guidelines for therapy. All recommended and alternative regimens are drawn from the most recent treatment guidelines. Although this article focuses primarily on therapy, it also emphasizes the importance of counseling and prevention. Clinicians have the opportunity and

UNLABELLED: Sexually transmitted diseases are a persistent problem in the United States and throughout the world. Many of these infections involve the skin and may be encountered in the field of dermatology. This 3-part review highlights the cutaneous features, diagnosis, and treatment of 11 of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, other than AIDS. The second part of this series focuses on anogenital warts, chronic viral hepatitis, molluscum contagiosum, scabies, and pediculosis pubis. Additional features, such as epidemiology and transmission of the organism, are discussed when appli

We surveyed the directors of all 92 long day care centres in western Sydney to document the occurrence of communicable disease outbreaks during 1992 and to identify risk factors for the occurrence of these outbreaks. A total of 6092 children were enrolled at the centres, of whom 530 (8.7%) were less than 3 years old. Most centres (80.4%) reported at least one outbreak of communicable disease. Diarrhoea was the most commonly reported outbreak type (60 outbreaks), followed by conjunctivitis, head louse infestation and chicken pox (46, 44 and 24 outbreaks, respectively). Chicken pox outbreaks had

The prevalences of several sexually transmitted diseases (STD) among patients attending a public STD clinic were determined in a prospective study. Rates of gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, nongonococcal urethritis, pediculosis pubis, scabies, and venereal warts were ascertained according to sex, sexual preference, and race. Numbers of cases of diseases not routinely reported to most public health agencies exceeded numbers of cases of diseases that are routinely reported. Rates of gonorrhea were higher among men than among women and higher among blacks than among whites. Sy

BACKGROUND: The human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, is a cosmopolitan blood-sucking ectoparasite affecting mostly schoolchildren in both developed and developing countries. In Honduras, chemical pediculicides are the first line of treatment, with permethrin as their main active ingredient. Despite the extended use of these products, there is currently no research investigating insecticide resistance in Honduran head lice. In head lice, the most common mechanism is knockdown resistance (kdr), which is the result of two point mutations and the associated amino acid substitutions, T917I

CONTEXT:: Infections are common in contact sports. This review aims to describe the epidemiology, presenting signs and symptoms, treatment guidelines, and regulations for several common infections seen in contact sport athletes. The conditions discussed include bacterial skin infections, herpes simplex virus, molluscum contagiosum, common warts, tinea, scabies, head lice, conjunctivitis, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, and vaccine-preventable illnesses.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION:: Searches were performed across PubMed and MEDLINE research databases. In addition, general internet s

Host associations of highly host-specific chewing lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) across multiple avian species remains fairly undocumented in the West African country of Benin. Two hundred and seventeen bird specimens collected from multiple localities across Benin and housed at the Texas A&M University Biodiversity Research and Teaching Collections were examined for lice. Lice were identified and genetic data (mitochondrial COI and nuclear EF-1α genes) were obtained and phylogenetically analyzed. In total, we found 15 host associations, 7 of which were new to science. Genetically, most lice fro
