Age-of-acquisition affects object recognition and compound word identification: Evidence from visual duration thresholds and progressive demasking.

Items acquired during childhood are processed more quickly and accurately than those acquired during adulthood, a phenomenon known as the age of acquisition (AoA) effect. One explanation is that the AoA effect results from the arbitrary nature of the input-output mapping during the development of a lexical-semantic representation. However, previous behavioural studies have not directly compared the AoA effects in pictures and word processing. To investigate this, 48 British English students completed a visual duration threshold task and four variations of progressive demasking experiments. In

Predicting errors before they occur using trial-by-trial dynamics of pre-error and post-error behavior.

Errors rarely occur in isolation, but rather within behavioral sequences and are known to shape subsequent behavior. However, understanding the full time course of the impact of errors has been challenging given data limitations. Here, to gain key insights, two groups of precisely matched participants (n > 35,000) were compared; those who made versus did not make an error in a short object discrimination task. Linear mixed-effects models revealed error-induced effects both preceding and following errors. First, the error group showed pre-error speeding up to eight trials before the error occur

Spatial structure triggers systematic foraging: Segmenting search displays leads to searching by segments.

Spatial structure often provides information about the likely location of targets in visual search tasks and in real life. However, the extent to which spatial structure affects attention when it provides no information about target locations is less well understood. This is investigated here using a visual foraging task, whereby individuals search for many targets amongst many distractors. In six online experiments, participants foraged for multiple instances of two target types amongst two distractor types, defined by either features or conjunctions. Experiments comprised a series of manipul

Modulation of perceived time caused by stimulus clarity in object recognition.

This study explored the modulation of perceived time based on subjective visual perception, mainly focusing on object recognition. Unlike physical time, psychological time is subject to various influences, such as attention and stimulus characteristics. We conducted two experiments using images comprising dots to systematically vary stimulus clarity and visual recognizability. Experiment 1 revealed that perceived time was longer when an object was identifiable within the stimulus. Experiment 2 extended this finding by offering three response options related to object recognition and naming. Th

What contributes to our perception of the Shepard Tabletop Illusion?

A vertical parallelogram placed next to an identical one but rotated horizontally by 90 degrees gives rise to one of the most powerful geometrical illusions: the Shepard Tabletop Illusion. In this illusion, the two parallelograms, or tabletops, are perceived as having different aspect ratios: the vertical one appears longer and thinner than the horizontal one. Although the exact mechanisms responsible for the illusion remain unclear, it is commonly understood that the brain treats the vertical tabletop as a three-dimensional object receding into the distance, and the horizontal one as an objec

Visual recognition memory does not benefit from preserved temporal order from encoding to test.

Research suggests that items from similar spatiotemporal contexts are more likely to be retrieved together. Here, we sought to test whether preserving temporal order from encoding to test might lead to a retrieval benefit. Then, we tested the participants using test items that were either presented in the same order as during encoding, or the order of items was different due to it being randomized. Across two experiments, we found that maintaining the same temporal order did not improve overall memory performance in the visual old/new recognition task we used. Next, we show that conditional-re

The influence of spatial frequencies, orientation, and familiarity on face stimuli integration.

When we observe an object, our visual system extracts both coarse and fine information to build a coherent percept. This process is often described as a coarse-to-fine integration, in which low spatial frequency (LSF) information provides an initial scaffold for interpreting high spatial frequency (HSF) detail. Here, we examined how this integration unfolds in face perception across two experiments. We leveraged the face inversion effect-where inverted faces are harder to recognize than upright ones-as a tool to probe processing flexibility. In Experiment 1, ten participants matched two famili

Ensemble processing can be influenced by attentional cueing.

At any given moment, the human visual system encounters a wealth of sensory information that far exceeds the processing capacity of cognitive mechanisms such as visual attention and visual working memory. To overcome these capacity limitations, our visual system uses both ensemble perception and selective attention to navigate our visual environment. The goal of the current study is to explore potential interactions between these two adaptive cognitive processes. That is, we investigated whether spatial attention plays a role in forming ensemble representations. Specifically, we utilized a spa

Border-ownership reversals determine the strength of metacontrast masking.

Visual objects can be rendered invisible if their borders are assigned to other objects, showing that border-ownership (BO) is critical for perception. Objects can also be rendered invisible by using masking to limit the amount of time the brain has to process the object. An example of this is metacontrast masking (MM). MM occurs when an object is briefly presented and is followed by the presentation of a mask with closely adjacent contours. The mask can render the target object invisible, even though the target object is processed in high level brain areas. We propose that a critical factor t

Auditory scene analysis in music: A synthetic review.

Music is the synthesis of a multitude of components: the combination of spectrotemporal structures emerging from different acoustic or electronic instruments, carefully orchestrated to form a connected whole. From these complex textures, our auditory system groups components through a process called musical scene analysis (MSA). In this review, we aim to address several questions about MSA. What are the perceptual principles underpinning musical scene perception? How are these principles being probed with different experimental paradigms? What stimulus and listener factors shape MSA? And what

Limited effects of action on ensemble processing.

Previous research has shown that production of an action toward a visual stimulus may prioritize features of that stimulus for a brief period of time. One recent report has suggested that such an action effect specifically influences ensemble processing - the extraction of summary statistics from a display of multiple items. In the present study we replicate the results that led to that conclusion by having participants assess the mean size of elements in an ensemble after having made an action to either a small or large object. The size of the acted-on object biased the ensemble judgment, but

Listeners do not tune in to more rewarding voices.

During conversations in the presence of other competing talkers, multiple speech streams compete for listeners' attentional focus. Listeners must segregate speech streams, and selectively attend to the target talker while filtering out irrelevant speech. Research on value-driven attention suggests that perceptual and attentional processes are biased by prior rewarding experiences with stimuli-that is, high-valued stimuli win attentional competition. However, it remains unknown whether such effects generalize to speech perception in multitalker environments. Here, the present study investigated

Beyond faces: The effect of context on ensemble emotion perception.

The ability to judge the overall emotion of a crowd is fundamental to navigating naturalistic social scenes. However, research has typically studied such judgments using isolated faces, without any contextual information. In two experiments, this study investigates how facial expressions, background context, and observers' emotional states jointly influence ensemble emotion perception in naturalistic scenes. In Experiment 1, participants judged the overall emotion of crowd scenes that were constructed by superimposing human figures, whose facial emotional values were quantified on a continuous

Robust representation of the spatial arrangement of topological features.

Recent work has shown that people are sensitive to coarse differences in network topology, including network features like "holes," "crosses," and "T-junctions." Even children as young as 4 years old will readily distinguish between items that differ slightly in their network topology. But how robust is this sensitivity? Here, we evaluate whether people are not only sensitive to differences in the presence or absence of certain topological features, but also to their exact spatial arrangement. In a first experiment, we show that people distinguish figures which possess all the same topological

Probing the use of visual search as a tool to enhance reading speed.

The reading mechanism is associated with perceptual, attentional, and oculomotor processes that partly overlap with functions attributed to the magnocellular-dorsal system. On this basis, we examined whether a home-based visual-search training program, without phonological, orthographic, or reading components, could influence reading-related performance in adult typical readers. Participants were assigned to one of three training versions that differed in the visual features of Gabor patterns to be detected (orientation, phase, or configuration), or to a no-training control group. Training per

The effects of hippocampal dentate gyrus lesions on categorical face perception.

Traditionally considered a memory structure, the hippocampus may contribute to visual perception in fundamental ways. Recent evidence suggests that the ability to differentiate highly confusable unfamiliar faces could involve pattern separation, a mnemonic process mediated by the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Hippocampal involvement, however, may be influenced by existing face memories. We tested BL, an individual with rare selective bilateral dentate gyrus lesions accompanied by compromised pattern separation, and 34 control participants to investigate these possibilities. Participants were admi

Condition-specific changes in gaze allocation following gaze-triggered interpersonal-distance outcomes.

Interpersonal distance is a fundamental social cue, yet it remains unclear whether repeated exposure to gaze-triggered approach or recede animations is associated with subsequent gaze allocation. This study examined whether such gaze-triggered changes in apparent interpersonal distance were associated with changes in dwell-time allocation toward face stimuli. Fifty adults completed two within-subject blocks (Approach vs. Recede), each consisting of Baseline, Training, and Test phases. During Training, fixating a designated face for a gaze-duration threshold triggered a predefined approach or r

Eccentricity determines the competition for attention.

It is widely assumed that attention for peripheral visual information is reduced, especially when such information competes with information closer to the fovea. However, existing evidence for such a peripheral attention deficit has suffered from several confounds. Here we reinvestigated how stimuli presented at different eccentricities compete for attention. Human observers saw two equally relevant orientations (Experiment 1) or colors (Experiment 2), presented at close and far eccentricities. The two patterns were presented sequentially (thus competing little for attention), or simultaneousl

Second-order facial features are processed analytically in composite faces.

In contrast to claims of holistic processing, upright aligned composite face morphs were recently shown to be processed in the same manner as inverted or misaligned composite face morphs (Cheng et al. 2018. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory and Cognition, 44, 833-862). In the present paper, we replicate that work, using a set of schematic faces which vary second-order features (e.g., lip height and eye separation) in the top and bottom halves of the schematic face. We find that the present stimuli show the hallmarks of holistic processing in a complete composite face task, b

Fixation-related potentials during a virtual navigation task: The influence of image statistics on early cortical processing.

Historically, electrophysiological correlates of scene processing have been studied with experiments using static stimuli presented for discrete timescales where participants maintain a fixed eye position. Gaps remain in generalizing these findings to real-world conditions where eye movements are made to select new visual information and where the environment remains stable but changes with our position and orientation in space, driving dynamic visual stimulation. Co-recording of eye movements and electroencephalography (EEG) is an approach to leverage fixations as time-locking events in the E
