Clade 2.3.4.4 H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) have spread worldwide. We present a historical account of the story behind the famous hawk/goose experiments of Lorenz and Tinbergen in a wider context of cognitive ethology. BACKGROUND: Continuous cell substrates with improved permissiveness for influenza virus replication are of considerable interest for vaccine development and manufacturing. Vero cells have an excellent regulatory track record; however, their relatively low influenza virus productivity limits their broader application.
