Relative eye height modulates perceived velocity of targets approaching along a horizontal plane.

Relative eye height, defined as the vertical distance between the observer's eye level and a target on the horizontal plane, provides a geometric cue to depth through the angle between eye level and the line of sight. In three-dimensional space, objects often move in depth at varying heights relative to the observer's eye level, requiring integration of multiple cues for accurate velocity judgments. However, the contribution of relative eye height to velocity perception remains unclear. This study examined how relative eye height influences perceived velocity for an approaching target moving a

Holistic processing is robust in the face of task-context-induced spatial attention biases.

One account of the characteristic holistic processing of faces and objects of expertise posits that it arises from a learned attention to the whole, rendering it difficult to attend only to parts of stimuli. We tested whether task-context-induced attentional biases for the top or bottom part of a stimulus alter holistic processing of faces. We induced attentional biases by manipulating the probability (75% or 25%) that the top or bottom part would be task-relevant in a modified composite part-judgement task. Manipulating the proportion of trials in which the top/bottom region was task-relevant

Features without their locations in visual working memory: Evidence from change-detection tasks.

A fundamental question in visual working memory research is whether memories are comprised of collections of features, or are feature-bound object-based representations. The role of location has been particularly important, as many theories posit that location is a necessary feature to which others are bound. We employ novel variants of change-detection tasks to test the possibility that the features of an object can be stored in visual working memory even without a corresponding memory for their studied locations. In Experiment 1 memory capacity for the colors of studied items was higher than

Beauty in the eye of the beholder: Attention to attractive faces dissociates across covert and overt measures.

Attractive faces attract attention. Here, we examined how facial attractiveness influenced covert and overt social attention. Participants discriminated targets occurring after one of 32 different face-object cue pairs, which varied in the degree of attractiveness. Experiment 1 measured covert social attention in manual responses while maintaining central fixation. No evidence of attentional preference for faces was found. Experiment 2 measured overt social attention in eye movements while maintaining natural viewing conditions. A reliable oculomotor preference for attractive faces was found.

Comparing object lifting kinematics and the size-weight illusion between physical reality and virtual reality.

This study compared the size-weight illusion (SWI) and object lifting kinematics between physical and virtual conditions, shedding light on the nuanced disparities in perception and action across different environmental mediums. We examined whether prior expectations about object weight based on size cues, which affect the experience of real-world object interactions, are different in virtual reality (VR). Employing a highly realistic virtual environment with precisely matched visual size and haptic cues, we tested the hypothesis that VR, which may be experienced as uncertain, unfamiliar, or u

Age-related differences in frontoparietal activation for target and distractor singletons during visual search.

Age-related decline in visual search performance has been associated with different patterns of activation in frontoparietal regions using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), but whether these age-related effects represent specific influences of target and distractor processing is unclear. Therefore, we acquired event-related fMRI data from 68 healthy, community-dwelling adults ages 18-78 years, during both conjunction (T/F target among rotated Ts and Fs) and feature (T/F target among Os) search. Some displays contained a color singleton that could correspond to either the target or

Rumination burdens the updating of working memory.

Working memory is a vital, but capacity-limited, cognitive instrument that requires frequent updating as our goals and environment change. Individuals diagnosed with depression have a reduced capacity compared with the general population, as they have a propensity to fixate on negative information, even when it is not relevant for the task at hand. Here we investigated how characteristics of psychiatric illnesses, such as rumination, affect a person's ability to efficiently update emotional information in mind. We used both neutral and negative pictures of scenes in a working memory updating t

How time gets spatial: factors determining the stability and instability of the mental time line.

Left-to-right readers classify faster past events with motor responses on the left side of space and future events with responses on the right side. This suggests a left-to-right spatial organization in the mental representation of time. Here, we show that the significance and reliability of this representation are linked to the joint use of temporal and spatial codes in the task at hand. In a first unimanual Go/No-Go Implicit Association Test (IAT), attending selectively to "past" or to "future" words did not activate corresponding "left" or "right" spatial concepts and vice versa. In a secon

Are auditory cues special? Evidence from cross-modal distractor-induced blindness.

A target that shares features with preceding distractor stimuli is less likely to be detected due to a distractor-driven activation of a negative attentional set. This transient impairment in perceiving the target (distractor-induced blindness/deafness) can be found within vision and audition. Recently, the phenomenon was observed in a cross-modal setting involving an auditory target and additional task-relevant visual information (cross-modal distractor-induced deafness). In the current study, consisting of three behavioral experiments, a visual target, indicated by an auditory cue, had to be

Attentional modulations of audiovisual interactions in apparent motion: Temporal ventriloquism effects on perceived visual speed.

The timing of brief stationary sounds has been shown to alter different aspects of visual motion, such as speed estimation. These effects of auditory timing have been explained by temporal ventriloquism and auditory dominance over visual information in the temporal domain. Although previous studies provide unprecedented evidence for the multisensory nature of speed estimation, how attention is involved in these audiovisual interactions remains unclear. Here, we aimed to understand the effects of spatial attention on these audiovisual interactions in time. We utilized a set of audiovisual stimu

Shared cognitive resources between memory and attention during sound-sequence encoding.

You are on the phone, walking down a street. This daily situation calls for selective attention, allowing you to ignore surrounding irrelevant sounds, while trying to encode in memory the relevant information from the phone. Attention and memory are indeed two cognitive functions that are interacting constantly. However, their interaction is not yet well characterized during sound-sequence encoding. We independently manipulated both selective attention and working memory in a delayed-matching-to-sample of two tone-series, played successively in one ear. During the first melody presentation (me

Non-invasive neurostimulation modulates processing of spatial frequency information in rapid perception of faces.

This study used high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) to examine how low and high spatial frequency filtered faces are processed. Response times were measured in a task where healthy young adults categorised spatially filtered hybrid faces, presented at foveal and peripheral blocks, while sham and high-frequency random noise was applied to a lateral occipito-temporal location on their scalp. Both the Frequentist and Bayesian approaches show that in contrast to sham, active stimulation significantly reduced response times to peripherally presented low spatial frequency inf

Temporal integration in the perception and discrimination of solid shape.

Two experiments evaluated the importance of temporal integration for the perception and discrimination of solid object shape. In Experiment 1, observers anorthoscopically viewed moving or stationary cast shadows of naturally shaped solid objects (bell peppers, Capsicum annuum) through narrow (4-mm wide) slits. At any given moment, observers could only see a very small portion of the overall object shape (generally less than 10%). The results showed that the observers' discrimination performance for the moving cast shadows was much higher than that obtained for the stationary shadows, demonstra

Dichotic listening performance with cochlear-implant simulations of ear asymmetry is consistent with difficulty ignoring clearer speech.

There are an increasing number of bilateral and single-sided-deafness cochlear-implant (CI) users who hope to achieve improved spatial-hearing abilities through access to sound in both ears. It is, however, unclear how speech is processed when inputs are functionally asymmetrical, which may have an impact on spatial-hearing abilities. Therefore, functionally asymmetrical hearing was controlled and parametrically manipulated using a channel vocoder as a CI simulation. In Experiment 1, normal-hearing (NH) listeners performed a dichotic listening task (i.e., selective attention to one ear, ignori

Effects of cognitive load and type of object on the visual looming bias.

According to the behavioral urgency hypothesis, organisms have evolved various mechanisms that facilitate their survival by focusing attention and resources on approaching danger. One example of such mechanisms is the looming bias-the tendency for an individual to judge an approaching object's distance as being closer or time-to-collision as being sooner than receding or stationary objects. To date, most research on the looming bias has explored the ways in which human factors and object characteristics influence the strength and direction of the bias. The current study expanded on this field

Deciphering human decision rules in motion discrimination.

We investigated the eight decision rules for a same-different task, as summarized in Petrov (Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 16(6), 1011-1025, 2009). These rules, including the differencing (DF) rule and the optimal independence rule, are all based on the standard model in signal detection theory. Each rule receives two stimulus values as inputs and uses one or two decision criteria. We proved that the false alarm rate p(F) ≤ 1/2 for four of the rules. We also conducted a same-different rating experiment on motion discrimination (n = 54), with 4∘ or 8∘ directional difference. We found that the

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the use of tactile stimulation in vection research.

Vection is classically defined as the illusory perception of self-motion induced via visual stimuli. The utility of vection research lies in its potential to enhance simulation fidelity, as measured through presence, and reduce the probability that motion sickness symptoms occur. Studies have shown a multimodal interaction of various sensory systems in facilitating vection, and the utility of co-stimulating some of these sensory systems along with the presentation of visual stimuli have been reviewed. However, a review on the use of tactile stimulation in vection research appears to be missing

Response-level processing during visual feature search: Effects of frontoparietal activation and adult age.

Previous research suggests that feature search performance is relatively resistant to age-related decline. However, little is known regarding the neural mechanisms underlying the age-related constancy of feature search. In this experiment, we used a diffusion decision model of reaction time (RT), and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate age-related differences in response-level processing during visual feature search. Participants were 80 healthy, right-handed, community-dwelling individuals, 19-79 years of age. Analyses of search performance indicated that

Updating perception and action across real-world viewpoint changes.

A growing body of research suggests that performing actions can distort the perception of size, distance, and other visual information. These distortions have been observed under a variety of circumstances, and appear to persist in both perception and memory. However, it is unclear whether these distortions persist as observers move to new viewpoints. To address this issue, the present study assessed whether action-specific distortions persist across changes in viewpoint. Participants viewed an object that was projected onto a table, then reached for it with their index finger or a reach-exten

Can unconscious sequential integration of semantic information occur when the prime Chinese characters are displayed from left to right?

Recent studies have investigated whether conscious awareness is necessary for semantic integration. Although results have varied, simultaneous presentation of words have consistently led to greater semantic integration than sequential presentation in a single location. The current studies were designed to investigate whether the disadvantage of sequential presentation for unconscious semantic integration is specific to unfamiliar word-by-word presentation in one location or extends to the more natural reading conditions of viewing items sequentially from left to right. In Experiment 1, when th
