INTRODUCTION: Adequate brushing of oral mucosa is important for accurate human papillomavirus (HPV) detection in potentially malignant (oral leukoplakia [OL], oral lichen planus [OLP]) and malignant (oral squamous cell carcinoma [OSCC]) lesions. Since various factors may limit the adequacy of oral brushing and, consequently, the accuracy of HPV detection, modified sampling procedures should be evaluated for their effect on HPV frequency and/or types detected.
AIM: To compare the HPV frequency in samples obtained by brushing the lesion site with the frequency in samples obtained by brushing an

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transoral laser surgery is the optimal surgical treatment modality for the early stages of glottic cancer. To allow for further treatment to be as effective and as minimal as possible, persistent or recurrent tumors should be detected very soon. The main aim is to minimize the risk of necessity of performing a total laryngectomy. Flexible videoendoscopy with narrow band imaging (NBI) was recommended by the European Laryngological Society as a diagnostic method for the follow-up of patients treated for laryngeal cancer. Nevertheless, the efficacy of this technique has

PURPOSE: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the selective destruction of neoplastic cells through the activation of a photosensitizer by light. We have previously shown that the photosensitizer Photofrin (porfimer sodium) is selectively accumulated in transformed lesions destined to become malignant, but not yet definable histologically as precancers. The aim of this investigation was to determine if this premalignant tissue could be selectively destroyed by systemically administered Photofrin activated by 630 nm red light via an argon dye laser.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The carcinogenic model

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study aimed to identify novel biomarkers for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) screening to improve the survival rate of patients with oral cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated differential salivary gene expression in patients with OSCC, those with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), and healthy volunteers (HVs). CPLANE1 was selected for further investigation by microarray analysis. We used quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) to determine CPLANE1 expression levels in the saliva. The expression of CPLANE1 in normal and oral cancer tissues

BACKGROUND: Pachyonychia congenita (PC) refers to a group of autosomal dominant disorders caused by mutations in five keratin genes (KRT16,KRT6A,KRT17,KRT6B or KRT6C). Current disease classification is based on the gene harbouring disease-causing variants.
AIMS: We harnessed the International Pachyonychia Congenita Research Registry (IPCRR) containing both clinical and molecular data on patients with PC worldwide, to identify genetic variants predicting disease severity.
METHODS: We ascertained 815 individuals harbouring keratin mutations registered in the IPCRR. We looked for statistically

INTRODUCTION: The overall prevalence of HIV associated oral lesions among adults has decreased since the advent of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART).
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study describes the prevalence and types of oral mucosal lesions in adults, who accepted a dedicated oral and dental programme for HIV-infected patients. The incidence of oral lesions and the CD4 cell counts on those patients, were related to cases receiving HAART and to those who were not.
DESIGN: This was a retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Patients were interviewed, using a stru

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) and denture-related mucosal lesions (DMLs) in denture wearers and to co-relate the prevalence with age, gender, type of denture and any systemic conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental records of 380 denture wearers were retrospectively reviewed for OMLs and DMLs.
RESULTS: We found 45% of the denture wearers had DMLs and 60.8% had OMLs not related to denture wearing. Although the prevalence of DMLs was higher in complete denture wearers than in partial denture wearers (49% vs. 42.2%), this difference was not significant.

BACKGROUND: Dental education must emphasize early diagnosis and management of oral mucosal disease, including early detection of oral premalignant lesions and cancer. The authors evaluated clinical findings of oral screening examinations of dental patients during a one-week period in an urban dental school clinic.
METHODS: Third- and fourth-year dental students conducted clinical screening examinations for all dental patients of record seen during the Yul Brynner Foundation's Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week in April 2006.
RESULTS: Of 262 patients, 100 (38.2 percent) reported that t

BACKGROUND: Chronic laryngitis may be a predisposing factor for laryngeal carcinoma.
METHOD: 100 consecutive chronic laryngitis patients were assessed for associated factors for this disease. Voice assessment was undertaken, including objective measurement, subjective assessment of sound and a self-assessment by questionnaire--the so-called Voice Handicap Index (VHI). When laryngostroboscopy of the vocal cords was suspicious, then microlaryngoscopy with biopsy and histological examination was undertaken.
RESULTS: The main associated factors were found to be nicotine abuse (50 patients), gast

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a significant risk factor for uterine cervical carcinoma. Many studies have also demonstrated the presence of HPV in oral epithelia tissue, but the role of HPV infection in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is still controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and type of HPV in OSCC and oral pre-cancerous lesions. DNA samples were collected by cytobrushing from 51 patients with OSCC, 46 with oral pre-cancerous lesions and 90 normal controls. Nested polymerase chain reaction and gene-chip arrays were used to identify the HPV type

Patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are at risk of developing second or multiple primary cancers as a result of field cancerization in the upper aerodigestive tract. In order to quantify the incidence of field change observable in oral mucosa, 26 consecutive new (untreated) patients presenting with a unilateral OSCC (18) or a premaligant lesion (eight) underwent 'mirror image' biopsies from clinically normal-looking mucosa at corresponding anatomical sites. A total of 15 patients (58%) demonstrated histologically abnormal tissue upon microscopic examination: six showed reactive c

Our objective was to describe the management of oral cancer and pre-cancer as stated by primary care dentists and their views on screening. We conducted a survey of all general dental practitioners and community dentists in Northern Ireland (n = 635), to which 428 replied (response rate: 67%). 94% stated that examination of the oral soft tissues constituted part of their usual practice during the regular dental check-up. Suspicious lesions were generally referred early, 68.5% of dentists referring white lesions within one month of presentation. The corresponding figures for red lesions, lumps

Alterations in cell membrane glycosylation play important role in oral carcinogenesis. The present study evaluated salivary sialylation changes i.e. total sialic acid (TSA), sialidase activity, linkage specific (α2-3 and α2-6) sialoproteins and sialyl transferase (ST) activity in controls, patients with oral precancerous conditions (OPC) and oral cancer. Subjects enrolled included 100 controls, 50 patients with OPC, 100 oral cancer patients, and 30 post treatment follow-ups. TSA was estimated by spectrophotometric method, sialidase activity by spectrofluorometric assay and linkage specific bio
