Ameliorative Potential of Hot Compress on Sciatic Nerve Pain in Chronic Constriction Injury-Induced Rat Model.

Hot compress modalities are used to ameliorate pain despite prevalent confusion about which modality should be used and when. Most recommendations for hot compresses are based on empirical experience, with limited evidence to support its efficacy. To obtain insight into the nerve transmission mechanism of hot compresses and to identify the nerve injury marker proteins specifically associated with sciatic nerve pain, we established a rat model of chronic constriction injury (CCI) and performed mechanical allodynia, electrophysiology, and histopathological analysis. All CCI rats exhibited geomet

Isolated thalamic stroke - analysis of clinical characteristics and asymmetry of lesion distribution in a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: More patients with left-hemispheric than right-hemispheric strokes are admitted to hospitals. This is due to the easier recognition of cortical symptoms of the dominant-hemisphere. The thalamus constitutes a "micro-model" of the brain cortex with structure-function relationships known to be asymmetric, especially for language, memory, and visuo-spatial neurocognitive functions. The goal of this study was to characterize clinical symptoms and lesion distribution patterns of patients with acute isolated thalamic stroke (ITS) and to evaluate whether left-sided lesions are overrepresen

Reproducible metabolic topographies associated with multiple system atrophy: Network and regional analyses in Chinese and American patient cohorts.

PURPOSE: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is an atypical parkinsonian syndrome and often difficult to discriminate clinically from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and Parkinson's disease (PD) in early stages. Although a characteristic metabolic brain network has been reported for MSA, it is unknown whether this network can provide a clinically useful biomarker in different centers. This study was aimed to identify and cross-validate MSA-related brain network and assess its ability for differential diagnosis and clinical correlations in Chinese and American patient cohorts. METHODS: We inclu

Perinidal Angiogenesis Is a Predictor for Neurovascular Uncoupling in the Periphery of Brain Arteriovenous Malformations: A Task-Based and Resting-State fMRI Study.

BACKGROUND: Potential neurovascular uncoupling (NVU) related to perinidal angiogenesis (PA) of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) may cause inappropriate presurgical mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), resulting in overconfident resection and postoperative morbidity. PURPOSE: To evaluate the potential impact of PA upon fMRI blood oxygen level-dependent signal in the periphery of AVMs. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: Twenty-one patients with AVMs located in the primary sensorimotor cortex (SM1) undergoing task-based fMRI (hand motor), and 19 patients with s

Modulation of Speech Motor Learning with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of the Inferior Parietal Lobe.

The inferior parietal lobe (IPL) is a region of the cortex believed to participate in speech motor learning. In this study, we investigated whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the IPL could influence the extent to which healthy adults (1) adapted to a sensory alteration of their own auditory feedback, and (2) changed their perceptual representation. Seventy subjects completed three tasks: a baseline perceptual task that located the phonetic boundary between the vowels /e/ and /a/; a sensorimotor adaptation task in which subjects produced the word "head" under conditions o

The role of nitric oxide in the anticonvulsant effects of pyridoxine on penicillin-induced epileptiform activity in rats.

The present study was conducted to identify the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the anticonvulsant effects of pyridoxine hydrochloride on penicillin-induced epileptiform activity in rats. A single microinjection of penicillin (500 units) into the left sensorimotor cortex induced epileptiform activity within 2-4 min, progressing to full seizure activity lasting about 3-5h. Thirty minutes after penicillin injection, 20, 40, 80, and 160 mg/kg of pyridoxine hydrochloride was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.). Pyridoxine significantly reduced the frequency of penicillin-induced epileptiform activi

Striatocapsular haemorrhage.

Haemorrhages in the striatocapsular area, or striatocapsular haemorrhages (SCHs), have been regarded as a single entity, although the area is composed of several functionally discrete structures that receive blood supply from different arteries. We analysed the morphological and clinical presentations of 215 cases of SCHs according to a new classification method we have designed on the basis of arterial territories. SCHs were divided into six types: (i) anterior type (Heubner's artery); (ii) middle type (medial lenticulostriate artery); (iii) posteromedial type (anterior choroidal artery); (iv

Abnormalities of the balance between inhibition and excitation in the motor cortex of patients with cortical myoclonus.

Patients with cortical myoclonus may have purely focal or multifocal jerks, or they may have additional bilateral or generalized jerks, suggesting the spread of excitatory myoclonic activity between the cerebral hemispheres and across the sensorimotor cortex. The factors contributing to this spread of activity were investigated in 10 patients with multifocal cortical myoclonus and eight patients with multifocal and bilateral or generalized cortical myoclonus. The two groups were termed 'non- spreaders' and 'spreaders' respectively. Eight of the patients were also epileptic. Motor thresholds to

Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound of the Amygdala in Depression and Anxiety: A First-in-Human Active-Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Low-intensity focused ultrasound (FUS) offers a noninvasive method for directly modulating deep brain structures with millimeter-scale precision, potentially addressing a major limitation of existing noninvasive neuromodulation approaches. The amygdala is a key node in affective neurocircuitry and a compelling target for psychiatric intervention. We conducted a first-in-human active controlled trial (NCT05147142) of amygdala-targeted FUS in patients with major depressive disorder, examining safety and target engagement. METHODS: Ten participants with major depressive disorder comp

Cortico-Cerebellar neurodynamics during social interaction in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Exploring neural network dynamics during social interaction could help to identify biomarkers of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). A cerebellar involvement in autism has long been suspected and recent methodological advances now enable studying cerebellar functioning in a naturalistic setting. Here, we investigated the electrophysiological activity of the cerebro-cerebellar network during real-time social interaction in ASD. We focused our analysis on theta oscillations (3-8 Hz), which have been associated with large-scale coordination of distant brain areas and might contribute to

Alterations of regional spontaneous brain activity in obsessive-compulsive disorders: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) demonstrate that there is aberrant regional spontaneous brain activity in obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). Nevertheless, the results of previous studies are contradictory, especially in the abnormal brain regions and the directions of their activities. It is necessary to perform a meta-analysis to identify the common pattern of altered regional spontaneous brain activity in patients with OCD. METHODS: The present study conducted a systematic search for studies in English published up to May 202

Analysis of Artifactual Components Rejection Threshold towards Enhanced Characterization of Neural Activity in Post-Stroke Survivor.

Research advancement has spurred the usage of electroencephalography (EEG)-based neural oscillatory rhythms as a biomarker to complement clinical rehabilitation strategies for the recovery of motor functions in stroke survivors. However, the inevitable contamination of EEG signals with artifacts from various sources limits its utilization and effectiveness. Thus, the integration of Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Independent Component Label (ICLabel) has been widely employed to separate neural activity from artifacts. A crucial step in the ICLabel preprocessing pipeline is the artifac

Serum neurofilament light chain is associated with disturbed limbic-based functional connectivity in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis.

Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis shows a predilection for affecting the limbic system, but structural MRI in most patients is usually unremarkable. However, the functional connectivity reorganization of limbic nodes remains unknown. Serum neurofilament light chains (sNfL) are clinically linked with the disease severity and neurological disability of anti-NMDAR encephalitis. However, the relationship between sNfL and limbic-based functional architecture has not been explored. We consecutively recruited 20 convalescent patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and 24 healthy c

Neural Correlates of Self-Reported Knee Function in Individuals After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is a common knee injury among athletes and physically active adults. Despite surgical reconstruction and extensive rehabilitation, reinjuries are common and disability levels are high, even years after therapy and return to activity. Prolonged knee dysfunction may result in part from unresolved neuromuscular deficits of the surrounding joint musculature in response to injury. Indeed, "upstream" neurological adaptations occurring after injury may explain these persistent functional deficits. Despite evidence for injury consequences extending

Effector-independent brain network for auditory-motor integration: fMRI evidence from singing and cello playing.

Many everyday tasks share high-level sensory goals but differ in the movements used to accomplish them. One example of this is musical pitch regulation, where the same notes can be produced using the vocal system or a musical instrument controlled by the hands. Cello playing has previously been shown to rely on brain structures within the singing network for performance of single notes, except in areas related to primary motor control, suggesting that the brain networks for auditory feedback processing and sensorimotor integration may be shared (Segado et al. 2018). However, research has shown

Brain Functional and Structural Changes in Alzheimer's Disease With Sleep Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Sleep disorders (SLD) are supposed to be associated with increased risk and development of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and patients with AD are more likely to show SLD. However, neurobiological performance of patients with both AD and SLD in previous studies is inconsistent, and identifying specific patterns of the brain functional network and structural characteristics in this kind of comorbidity is warranted for understanding how AD and SLD symptoms interact with each other as well as finding effective clinical intervention. Thus, the aims of this systematic review were to summar

Mutation Carriers with Reduced C-Afferent Density Reveal Cortical Dynamics of Pain-Action Relationship during Acute Pain.

The evidence that action shapes perception has become widely accepted, for example, in the domain of vision. However, the manner in which action-relevant factors might influence the neural dynamics of acute pain processing has remained underexplored, particularly the functional roles of anterior insula (AI) and midanterior cingulate cortex (mid-ACC), which are frequently implicated in acute pain. To address this, we examined a unique group of heterozygous carriers of the rare R221W mutation on the nerve growth factor (NGF) gene. R221W carriers show a congenitally reduced density of C-nocicepto

Hyperactivity/restlessness is associated with increased functional connectivity in adults with ADHD: a dimensional analysis of resting state fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a serious and frequent psychiatric disorder of multifactorial pathogenesis. Several lines of evidence support the idea that ADHD is, in its core, a disorder of dysfunctional brain connectivity within and between several neurofunctional networks. The primary aim of this study was to investigate associations between the functional connectivity within resting state brain networks and the individual severity of core ADHD symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity). METHODS: Resting state functional magnetic resonance

Altered Whole-Brain and Network-Based Functional Connectivity in Parkinson's Disease.

Background: Functional imaging methods, such as resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, reflect changes in neural connectivity and may help to assess the widespread consequences of disease-specific network changes in Parkinson's disease. In this study we used a relatively new graph analysis approach in functional imaging: eigenvector centrality mapping. This model-free method, applied to all voxels in the brain, identifies prominent regions in the brain network hierarchy and detects localized differences between patient populations. In other neurological disorders, eigenvector cen
