Research prioritization of men's health and urologic diseases.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether disease representation in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) reflects disease burden, measured by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study as disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two investigators performed independent assessment of ten men's health and urologic diseases (MHUDs) in CDSR for systematic review and protocol representation, which were compared with percentage of total 2010 DALYs for the ten conditions. Data were analyzed for correlation using Spearman rank analysis. RESULTS: Nine of ten MHUDs we

[Time to recurrence after complete removal of calculi from different parts of the urinary system. five-year follow-up study].

INTRODUCTION: The usage of minimally invasive technologies (MIT), such as: extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), transurethral ureterolithotripsy (URS), retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PNL), allows to remove the stones from the calyx and pelvis system with 71- 96% of patients, and those from the ureter in 96.2% cases. However, a high incidence of stone recurrences (35-75%) demands the necessity of repeated lithotripsies and the search of the most appropriate methods of lithotripsy for reduction this indicator. The main goal. To determine the number

Is unilateral approach under local anesthesia for parathyroidectomy feasible? A systematic review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disease especially in postmenopausal women and in older adults, with elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels by parathyroid glands. The main symptoms of PHPT are hypercalcemia, often associated with hypercalciuria, urolithiasis and bone demineralization that results in osteopenia or osteoporosis and increases overall fracture risk. Parathyroidectomy is today the only definitive treatment for patients to prevent worsening of symptoms. Minimally invasive targeted approach for parathyroidectomy can be offered to patients wit

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis in children: diagnostic and therapeutic aspects.

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is an uncommon chronic, inflammatory disease of the kidney. Etio-pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of pediatric XGP is still obscure due to the limited number of cases. Therefore, a retrospective clinical study was carried out to present an updated picture of the entire spectrum of pediatric XGP based on our 30 years' experience covering one of the largest non-collected series treated in a single medical center. METHODS: Records of children who were treated for XGP in our unit from 1970 to 1999, inclusive, were reviewed retrospectively

Clinical outcomes after increasing bladder outlet resistance without augmentation cystoplasty in neurogenic bladder.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with neurogenic bladder (NGB) and urinary incontinence (UI) due to low bladder outlet resistance may require bladder neck procedures (BNPs) to achieve continence. These patients may also have reduced bladder capacity and or elevated detrusor storage pressures that require augmentation cystoplasty (AC). AC is not without complications that include risks for bladder rupture, urolithiasis, urinary tract infections and metabolic issues. Avoidance of AC would be helpful in patients with neurogenic urinary incontinence that have safe bladder parameters in the setting of low bl

Bidirectional associations between COVID-19 and psychiatric disorder: retrospective cohort studies of 62 354 COVID-19 cases in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Adverse mental health consequences of COVID-19, including anxiety and depression, have been widely predicted but not yet accurately measured. There are a range of physical health risk factors for COVID-19, but it is not known if there are also psychiatric risk factors. In this electronic health record network cohort study using data from 69 million individuals, 62 354 of whom had a diagnosis of COVID-19, we assessed whether a diagnosis of COVID-19 (compared with other health events) was associated with increased rates of subsequent psychiatric diagnoses, and whether patients with a

Renal calcification in children with renal tubular acidosis: What a paediatrician ‎should ‎know‎.

Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) can lead to renal calcification in children, which can cause various complications and impair renal function. This review provides pediatricians with a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between RTA and renal calcification, highlighting essential aspects for clinical management. The article analyzed relevant studies to explore the prevalence, risk factors, underlying mechanisms, and clinical implications of renal calcification in children with RTA. Results show that distal RTA (type 1) is particularly associated with nephrocalcinosis, which presents a

Nephrology in Veterinary Medicine.

Veterinary nephrology is a specialized field of veterinary medicine providing a high level of care for animals with all types of kidney disease. Veterinarians complete extensive training to become board-certified in veterinary nephrology-urology. Companion animal nephrology is the most advanced field; however, all species are afflicted by a variety of renal disorders. Most naturally occurring animal kidney diseases have similar disorders found in people; where veterinary research is lacking, clinical management is often modified from standard of care in people. Veterinarians have become adept

Exploring the Molecular Mechanisms by Which DEHP Promotes the Occurrence and Progression of Kidney Stones Based on Network Toxicology and Experimental Validation.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of kidney stones is increasing, while di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a widespread plasticizer and endocrine-disrupting pollutant, has been implicated as a potential environmental risk factor. This study investigated the mechanisms by which DEHP may aggravate calcium oxalate kidney stones through network toxicology, computational analyses, and experimental validation. METHODS: DEHP- and kidney stone-related targets were retrieved from six databases. Shared targets were analyzed using protein-protein interaction networks and Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia

Case Report: Uremia secondary to acute pyelonephritis in a patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

We report a 58-year-old male patient with acute kidney injury (AKI), who eventually developed anuria secondary to acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (ATIN) following acute pyelonephritis. Our patient had a 10-year history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, with an admission glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level of 6.3% and no prior history of renal disease. Before admission, he presented with painless gross hematuria and fever. Escherichia coli was detected in the urine culture at the local hospital, and anti-infective normalized his temperature, but urine output progressively decreased to anuria. After

Dietary interventions for preventing complications in idiopathic hypercalciuria.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic hypercalciuria is an inherited metabolic abnormality that is characterised by excessive amounts of calcium excreted in the urine by people whose calcium serum levels are normal. Morbidity associated with idiopathic hypercalciuria is chiefly related to kidney stone disease and bone demineralisation leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis. Idiopathic hypercalciuria contributes to kidney stone disease at all life stages; people with the condition are prone to developing oxalate and calcium phosphate kidney stones. In some cases, crystallised calcium can be deposited in the r
