Implicit learning modulates selective attention at sensory levels of perceptual processing.

Electrophysiological evidence suggests that attention can be modulated as early as 100 msec after stimulus presentation. However, it is not clear whether these changes are based primarily on stimulus properties such as perceptual load (i.e., the level of perceptual difficulty), or other properties, such as general attentional set or learned expectations concerning perceptual load. Using event-related potentials, this study examined how implicit learning of perceptual load conditions modulates selective attention at sensory levels of perceptual analysis. The results show significant differences

Site-Specific Olfactory Cleft Opacification Predicts Olfactory Function and Olfactory Training Outcome in Persistent Postinfection Olfactory Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Persistent postinfectious olfactory dysfunction (PIOD) is a prevalent and often refractory condition, with low recovery rates following olfactory training (OT), primarily due to sustained localized inflammation and opacification within the olfactory cleft (OC). However, conventional radiological assessments of OC opacification overlook the vertical distribution of olfactory neuroepithelium, limiting prognostic accuracy. This study introduces a modified subregion computed tomography (CT) scoring system integrated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to evaluate OC opacification's

Neuropsychological and neurological sequelae of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and the estimated need for neurorehabilitation: a prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse brain injury is a key component of post-cardiac arrest syndrome reported in 30-80% of survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). It is responsible for a high mortality rate, and is a common cause of cognitive and neurological deficits and disability. Symptom variability and dynamics and the rehabilitation potential remain poorly understood. AIM: To investigate symptom prevalence, type, and severity and the natural course of recovery within 12 months after OHCA, and to estimate neurorehabilitation needs. METHODS: Study participants were selected from OHCA survivor

Knockdown of cone-specific kinase GRK7 in larval zebrafish leads to impaired cone response recovery and delayed dark adaptation.

Phosphorylation of rhodopsin by rhodopsin kinase GRK1 is an important desensitization mechanism in scotopic vision. For cone vision GRK1 is not essential. However, cone opsin is phosphorylated following light stimulation. In cone-dominant animals as well as in humans, but not in rodents, GRK7, a cone-specific homolog of GRK1, has been identified in cone outer segments. To investigate the function of GRK7 in vivo, we cloned two orthologs of grk7 in zebrafish and knocked down gene expression of grk7a in zebrafish larvae by morpholino antisense nucleotides. Photoresponse recovery in Grk7a-deficie

Effects of different viewing perspectives on somatosensory activations during observation of touch.

Previous studies showed that neurons in the monkey premotor cortex became active when performing a particular action and also when observing the same action performed by others. These findings suggest a mirror system for action observation. Recently, bimodal neurons, sensitive both to visual and tactile stimulation, were reported in the parietal cortex, suggesting a potential mirror neuron system for observing and experiencing tactile stimulation. Subsequently, a mirror neuron system for observed touch has been suggested. The current study was designed to determine whether the activation of a

Speech recognition in noise: estimating effects of compressive nonlinearities in the basilar-membrane response.

OBJECTIVES: This experiment was designed to estimate effects of cochlear nonlinearities on tonal and speech masking for individuals with normal hearing who have a range of quiet thresholds. Physiological and psychophysical evidence indicates that for signals close to the characteristic frequency (CF) of a place on the basilar membrane, the normal growth of response of the basilar membrane is linear at lower stimulus levels and compressed at medium to higher stimulus levels. In contrast, at moderate to high CFs, the basilar membrane responds more linearly to stimuli at frequencies well below th

Involvement of Opioid Receptors and α2-Adrenoceptors in Inhibitory Pain Modulation Processes: A Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Crossover Study.

UNLABELLED: In healthy humans, high-frequency electrical stimulation (HFS) of the forearm not only evokes local signs of central sensitization but also triggers broader ipsilateral inhibitory influences on pain akin to a lateralized form of conditioned pain modulation. Paradoxically, some of these inhibitory influences are augmented by α2-adrenoceptor blockade. To determine whether opioid peptides mediate inhibitory effects after HFS, the opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone was coadministered orally with the α2-adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine in 16 healthy women in a double-blind placebo-c

Transgenic mice reveal unexpected diversity of on-off direction-selective retinal ganglion cell subtypes and brain structures involved in motion processing.

On-Off direction-selective retinal ganglion cells (DSGCs) encode the axis of visual motion. They respond strongly to an object moving in a preferred direction and weakly to an object moving in the opposite, "null," direction. Historically, On-Off DSGCs were classified into four subtypes according to their directional preference (anterior, posterior, superior, or inferior). Here, we compare two genetically identified populations of On-Off DSGCs: dopamine receptor 4 (DRD4)-DSGCs and thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor (TRHR)-DSGCs. We find that although both populations are tuned for posterio

The effect of repetition lag on electrophysiological and haemodynamic correlates of visual object priming.

The modulation of repetition effects by the lag between first and second presentations of a visual object during a speeded semantic judgment task was examined using both scalp event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (efMRI). Four levels of lag were used within a single session, from zero to one, to tens of intervening stimuli, and which allowed partial separation of the effects of interference from the effects of time. Reaction times (RTs) showed that the magnitude of repetition priming decreased as lag increased. The ERP data showed two distinct

Smell and taste function after completion of childhood cancer treatment: Follow-up of a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Smell and taste changes are common and bothersome treatment symptoms during childhood cancer treatment, consequently affecting food intake and quality of life. Patients frequently ask whether and when smell and taste function recover after childhood cancer treatment. However, this question is difficult to answer as available evidence is sparse and limited to cross-sectional designs. The current study aims to describe the prevalence of (both objective and subjective) smell and taste dysfunction, and its relation with dietary intake and Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) w

Home-Based Treatment for Chronic Pain Combining Neuromodulation, Computer-Assisted Training, and Telemonitoring in Patients With Breast Cancer: Protocol for a Rehabilitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a disabling symptom frequently reported in patients with breast cancer with a prevalence ranging from 25% to 60%, representing a major health issue. It has negative consequences on health status, causing psychological distress and affecting quality of life. Furthermore, the clinical management of chronic pain is often inadequate, and many patients do not benefit from the administration of pharmacological treatments. Alternative therapeutic options have been implemented to improve the psychophysical well-being of patients, including neuromodulation and complementary

Age-Related Changes in Temporal Resolution Revisited: Electrophysiological and Behavioral Findings From Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: The mechanisms underlying age-related changes in speech perception are still unclear, most likely multifactorial and often can be difficult to parse out from the effects of hearing loss. Age-related changes in temporal resolution (i.e., the ability to track rapid changes in sounds) have long been associated with speech perception declines exhibited by many older individuals. The goals of this study were as follows: (1) to assess age-related changes in temporal resolution in cochlear implant (CI) users, and (2) to examine the impact of changes in temporal resolution and cognition on

Within-subjects comparison of the HiRes and Fidelity120 speech processing strategies: speech perception and its relation to place-pitch sensitivity.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have confirmed that current steering can increase the number of discriminable pitches available to many cochlear implant (CI) users; however, the ability to perceive additional pitches has not been linked to improved speech perception. The primary goals of this study were to determine (1) whether adult CI users can achieve higher levels of spectral cue transmission with a speech processing strategy that implements current steering (Fidelity120) than with a predecessor strategy (HiRes) and, if so, (2) whether the magnitude of improvement can be predicted from indivi

Diagnosing cochlear dead regions in children.

OBJECTIVE: A dead region (DR) is defined as a region in the cochlea where inner hair cells and/or neurons are functioning so poorly that a tone producing peak vibration in this region is detected by off-frequency listening, i.e., via a place on the basilar membrane with a characteristic frequency different from that of the tone. The presence of a DR can have a significant effect on the perception of speech. People with and without DRs may differ in the benefit obtained from amplification and require different hearing aid settings. The Threshold Equalizing Noise (TEN) test and psychophysical tu

Long-Term Taste and Smell Outcomes After COVID-19.

IMPORTANCE: Self-report surveys suggest that long-lasting taste deficits may occur after SARS-CoV-2 infection, influencing nutrition, safety, and quality of life. However, self-reports of taste dysfunction are inaccurate, commonly reflecting deficits due to olfactory not taste system pathology; hence, quantitative testing is needed to verify the association of post-COVID-19 condition with taste function. OBJECTIVE: To use well-validated self-administered psychophysical tests to investigate the association of COVID-19 with long-term outcomes in taste and smell function. DESIGN, SETTING, AND P

Effects of aging and sensory loss on glial cells in mouse visual and auditory cortices.

Normal aging is often accompanied by a progressive loss of receptor sensitivity in hearing and vision, whose consequences on cellular function in cortical sensory areas have remained largely unknown. By examining the primary auditory (A1) and visual (V1) cortices in two inbred strains of mice undergoing either age-related loss of audition (C57BL/6J) or vision (CBA/CaJ), we were able to describe cellular and subcellular changes that were associated with normal aging (occurring in A1 and V1 of both strains) or specifically with age-related sensory loss (only in A1 of C57BL/6J or V1 of CBA/CaJ),

Psychopathological Aspects in Childhood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT): The Perception of Parents and Adolescents.

Background: Data about psychosocial sequelae of childhood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) are limited and the association with a specific donor type or other medical factors is largely unknown (Chang et al., 2012). The aim of the present study was to compare the psychological aspects of pediatric HSCT survivors with healthy peers. A secondary aim was to detect whether parents and children differed in the perception of mental health status. The influence of medical factors on psychological status was also examined.
