Reducing the rate and duration of Re-ADMISsions among patients with unipolar disorder and bipolar disorder using smartphone-based monitoring and treatment - the RADMIS trials: study protocol for two randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Unipolar and bipolar disorder combined account for nearly half of all morbidity and mortality due to mental and substance use disorders, and burden society with the highest health care costs of all psychiatric and neurological disorders. Among these, costs due to psychiatric hospitalization are a major burden. Smartphones comprise an innovative and unique platform for the monitoring and treatment of depression and mania. No prior trial has investigated whether the use of a smartphone-based system can prevent re-admission among patients discharged from hospital. The present RADMIS t

[Contribution of mindfulness meditation in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia].

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia is considered to be a serious public health issue affecting approximately 10% of adults. Chronic insomnia may increase the risk of health problem, psychological vulnerability and proneness to accidents. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is recommended as the first line of treatment. Even though CBT-I is widely considered as an effective therapy, 20 to 30% of patients do not respond to this treatment. Mindfulness therapy, known to reduce rumination and stress, could be an interesting complement to enhance CBT-I. The aim of this study is to evaluate the eff

Long-Term Effectiveness and Safety of Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation for Persistent Spinal Pain Syndrome: Results From an Expanded Prospective Registry.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent spinal pain syndrome (PSPS) with predominant low-back pain (LBP) is difficult to manage when conservative and surgical treatments fail. Dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG-S) offers segmental, focal neuromodulation that may be particularly suited for managing axial LBP, yet long-term evidence from real-world practice remains limited. This study evaluated the effectiveness, safety, and impact on medication use of bilateral T12 DRG-S in patients with intractable LBP, using prospectively collected registry data. METHODS: Of 33 consecutive patients with chronic LBP asse

Problem-solving versus cognitive restructuring of medically ill seniors with depression (PROMISE-D trial): study protocol and design.

BACKGROUND: With an ageing population in most Western countries, people are living longer but often with one or more chronic physical health problems. Older people in physically poor health are at greater risk of developing clinical depression. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Problem Solving Therapy (PST) have both been found to be efficacious in treating late-life depression, however patients with "multi-morbidity" (i.e. more than one chronic condition) are often excluded from these trials. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of CBT and PST in treating older adults who ha

Internet-Delivered Psychological Treatment for Parents With Health Anxiety by Proxy: Replicated Randomized Single-Case Experimental Design.

BACKGROUND: Health anxiety by proxy is characterized by ruminations about severe illness in one's child that can cause severe distress in affected parents. Health anxiety by proxy may lead to repeated unnecessary medical consultations and checking the child's body for symptoms, as well as heightened attention to their child's behavior, sign of illness, and bodily symptoms. It has been hypothesized that health anxiety by proxy may pose a risk for transmission of maladaptive symptom coping and health anxiety from the parent to their child. In spite of this, no targeted treatment has previously b

Understanding mechanisms of depression prevention: study protocol of a randomized cross-over trial to investigate mechanisms of mindfulness and positive fantasizing as intervention techniques for reducing perseverative cognition in remitted depressed individuals.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, and involves high relapse rates in which persistent negative thinking and rumination (i.e., perseverative cognition [PC]) play an important role. Positive fantasizing and mindfulness are common evidence-based psychological interventions that have been shown to effectively reduce PC and subsequent depressive relapse. How the interventions cause changes in PC over time, is unknown, but likely differ between the two. Whereas fantasizing may change the valence of thought content, mindfulness may operate

Worldwide absence of canonical benzimidazole resistance-associated mutations within β-tubulin genes from Ascaris.

BACKGROUND: The giant roundworm Ascaris is an intestinal nematode, causing ascariasis by infecting humans and pigs worldwide. Recent estimates suggest that Ascaris infects over half a billion people, with chronic infections leading to reduced growth and cognitive ability. Ascariasis affects innumerable pigs worldwide and is known to reduce production yields via decreased growth and condemnation of livers. The predominant anthelminthic drugs used to treat ascariasis are the benzimidazoles. Benzimidazoles interact with β-tubulins and block their function, and several benzimidazole resistance-ass

Behavioral and psychological factors in individuals with migraine without psychiatric comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that the course of migraine is influenced by comorbidities and that individual psychological characteristics may impact on the disease. Proper identification of psychological factors that are relevant to migraine is important to improve non-pharmacological management. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between psychological factors and migraine in subjects free of psychiatric comorbidities. METHODS: A sample of women with episodic (EM) and chronic migraine (CM) without history of psychiatric comorbidities were included in this cross-sectional study

Goal Directed Worry Rules Are Associated with Distinct Patterns of Amygdala Functional Connectivity and Vagal Modulation during Perseverative Cognition.

Excessive and uncontrollable worry is a defining feature of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). An important endeavor in the treatment of pathological worry is to understand why some people are unable to stop worrying once they have started. Worry perseveration is associated with a tendency to deploy goal-directed worry rules (known as "as many as can" worry rules; AMA). These require attention to the goal of the worry task and continuation of worry until the aims of the "worry bout" are achieved. This study examined the association between the tendency to use AMA worry rules and neural and au

THE DEPRESSION INVENTORY DEVELOPMENT SCALE: Assessment of Psychometric Properties Using Classical and Modern Measurement Theory in a CAN-BIND Trial.

Objective: The goal of the Depression Inventory Development (DID) project is to develop a comprehensive and psychometrically sound rating scale for major depressive disorder (MDD) that reflects current diagnostic criteria and conceptualizations of depression. We report here the evaluation of the current DID item bank using Classical Test Theory (CTT), Item Response Theory (IRT) and Rasch Measurement Theory (RMT). Methods: The present study was part of a larger multisite, open-label study conducted by the Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01655706). Tr

A Mobile Health Intervention (LifeBuoy App) to Help Young People Manage Suicidal Thoughts: Protocol for a Mixed-Methods Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Self-help smartphone apps offer a new opportunity to address youth suicide prevention by improving access to support and by providing potentially high fidelity and cost-effective treatment. However, there have been very few smartphone apps providing evidence-based support for suicide prevention in this population. To address this gap, we developed the LifeBuoy app, a self-help smartphone app informed by dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), to help young people manage suicidal thoughts in their daily life. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the protocol for a randomized controlled tria

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation of the Default Mode Network to Improve Sleep in Individuals With Insomnia Symptoms: Protocol for a Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cortical hyperarousal and ruminative thinking are common aspects of insomnia that have been linked with greater connectivity in the default mode network (DMN). Therefore, disrupting network activity within the DMN may reduce cortical and cognitive hyperarousal and facilitate better sleep. OBJECTIVE: This trial aims to establish a novel, noninvasive method for treating insomnia through disruption of the DMN with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, specifically with continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS). This double-blind, pilot randomized controlled trial will assess

[What do we know about compassion focused therapy for anxiety and depressive symptoms: A scoping review].

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety and depressive disorders are among the most common psychiatric conditions and have a high comorbidity rate. While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) remains the gold standard psychotherapeutic treatment, its protocols which focus on a specific disorder have limitations when faced with clinical complexity. Transdiagnostic approaches aim to overcome these constraints by targeting processes common to different mental disorders. Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is part of this approach. It is particularly aimed at patients with overwhelming shame and marked self-criticism, often

Disorders or complaints of memory are a frequent cause of consultation in depression, major anxiety and psychiatry disease with personality disorders. We report 3 patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), without diagnosis and treatment, examined in a specialized memory consultation. They always had OCD with cognitive checking. Diagnosis of transient global amnesia and temporal complex seizure were discussed in 2 cases. Psychometric impairment only was observed in first free recall of a verbal memory task and was no specific. Behavioural during testing seemed to be very important to a

Factors affecting post-traumatic growth in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients in South Korea: a descriptive survey study.

BackgroundWhile most studies on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) have focused on its negative impact, recent research has highlighted the concept of post-traumatic growth (PTG), where individuals experience positive psychological changes after a traumatic event. However, research on PTG in HSCT recipients remains limited. This study aimed to examine PTG as the primary outcome among HSCT recipients and identify key psychosocial and clinical predictors.MethodsAdult HSCT recipients within 1 year of transplantation at a university hospital in Seoul were enrolled from March 2018 to Ma
