[Effects of Chlorhexidine Gluconate Bathing Applied to Cancer Patients on MRSA and VRE Colonization: A Cross-Over Design Study].

Evidence shows that bathing with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) solution reduces the colonization of microorganisms that cause healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of CHG bath on MRSA and VRE colonization in cancer patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU). This crossover design study compared standard soap + water baths and 2% CHG baths in cancer patients. Between September 2018 and July 2019, 78 patients were divided into two arms. Patients in the first arm were washed with soap + water for the first three days, followed by 2%

Validated Preclinical Mouse Model for Therapeutic Testing against Multidrug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains.

The rise in infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria is outpacing the development of new antibiotics. The ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) are a group of clinically important bacteria that have developed resistance to multiple antibiotics and are commonly referred to as multidrug resistant (MDR). The medical and research communities have recognized that, without new antimicrobials, infections by MDR bacteria will soon become a leading cause of morbidity and

Epidemiology of patients with central nervous system infections, mainly neurosurgical patients: a retrospective study from 2012 to 2019 in a teaching hospital in China.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) infections are relatively rare but are associated with high mortality worldwide. Empirical antimicrobial therapy is crucial for the survival of patients with CNS infections, and should be based on the knowledge of the pathogen distribution and antibiotic sensitivities. The aim of this study was to investigate the features of pathogens in patients with CNS infections in North China and evaluate the risk factors for mortality and multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted with patients with positive cere

Chlorpromazine and Amitriptyline Are Substrates and Inhibitors of the AcrB Multidrug Efflux Pump.

Efflux is an important mechanism in Gram-negative bacteria conferring multidrug resistance. Inhibition of efflux is an encouraging strategy to restore the antibacterial activity of antibiotics. Chlorpromazine and amitriptyline have been shown to behave as efflux inhibitors. However, their mode of action is poorly understood. Exposure of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Escherichia coli to chlorpromazine selected for mutations within genes encoding RamR and MarR, regulators of the multidrug tripartite efflux pump AcrAB-TolC. Further experiments with S. Typhimurium containing AcrB D40

Amplified fragment length polymorphism and whole genome sequencing: a comparison of methods in the investigation of a nosocomial outbreak with vancomycin resistant enterococci.

BACKGROUND: Recognition of nosocomial outbreaks with antimicrobial resistant (AMR) pathogens and appropriate infection prevention measures are essential to limit the consequences of AMR pathogens to patients in hospitals. Because unrelated, but genetically similar AMR pathogens may circulate simultaneously, rapid high-resolution molecular typing methods are needed for outbreak management. We compared amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and whole genome sequencing (WGS) during a nosocomial outbreak of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) that spanned 5 months. METHODS: Hie

Rectal Colonization with Multidrug-Resistant Organisms and Subsequent Bloodstream Infections in Hematological Patients Undergoing Cellular Therapies.

Bacterial infections, especially bloodstream infections (BSIs), compromise the overall survival of patients with hematological malignancies undergoing cellular therapies. The interplay between rectal colonization by different types of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) and subsequent BSIs is not fully determined. We aimed to describe the natural history and risk factors for colonization by MDRO, as well as its impact on subsequent BSIs in patients treated with cellular therapies in an environment of antimicrobial resistance. Retrospective, single-center cohort study of consecutive adult hema
