Salivary defence factor concentrations in relation to oral and general parameters in HIV positive patients.

The objective of this study was to determine the relationships between saliva protein concentrations, oral mucosal lesions, and systemic parameters in HIV positive patients and controls. Twenty-three control volunteers and 58 HIV-antibody positive patients received a complete oral examination and medical evaluation. In saliva and serum samples, protein concentrations were recorded by a nephelometric method. The systemic parameters assessed were CD4+ cell count, CDC stages and antiretroviral therapy. Oral mucosal lesion prevalence was higher among subjects with lower CD4+ counts. Considering th

Systemic toxic effects during early phases of topical 4-NQO-induced oral carcinogenesis in rats.

BACKGROUND: Most studies have demonstrated 4-NQO toxicity to oral epithelium during oral carcinogenesis induction, but systemic toxicity has been poorly addressed. The aim of this study was to describe the systemic effect of 4-NQO topical application during early phases of oral cancer induction. METHODS: A 4-NQO propylene glycol ointment was topically applied on the rat tongue three times a week for 16 weeks. Local and systemic 4-NQO toxicity was evaluated by body weight gain, hematology, and serum chemistry analyses, histopathology, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistoch

CD133 expression in oral lichen planus correlated with the risk for progression to oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a potentially malignant disorder associated with an increased risk for progression to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The objective of this study to determine protein expression of cancer stem cell marker CD133 in tissue samples of patients with OLP and evaluate the correlation between CD133 expression and the risk of progression to OSCC. In this longitudinal case-control study, a total of 110 patients with OLP who received a mean follow-up of 56 months were enrolled, including 100 patients who did not progress to OSCC and 10 patients who had progressed to OSCC

Overexpression of COX-2 gene in oral cancer is independent of stage of disease and degree of differentiation.

The incidence of oral cancer is high in certain parts of the world including Southeast Asia. Smokeless tobacco and areca nut chewing is proposed as a possible factor. Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) receptors are present on neoplastic cells and are proposed to participate in initiation, transformation, progression and metastasis of cancer. In a prospective case-controlled study, 42 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, 13 cases of oral premalignant lesions, and oral mucosa from 32 normal subjects were evaluated for COX-2 gene expression using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reac

Phase I clinical trial of curcumin, a chemopreventive agent, in patients with high-risk or pre-malignant lesions.

Curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a yellow substance from the root of the plant Curcuma longa Linn., has been demonstrated to inhibit carcinogenesis of murine skin, stomach, intestine and liver. However, the toxicology, pharmacokinetics and biologically effective dose of curcumin in humans have not been reported. This prospective phase-I study evaluated these issues of curcumin in patients with one of the following five high-risk conditions: 1) recently resected urinary bladder cancer; 2) arsenic Bowen's disease of the skin; 3) uterine cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN); 4) oral leucoplakia;

Oncofetal fibronectins in oral carcinomas: correlation of two different types.

Different isoforms of fibronectin are derived from a single gene by alternative processing of the primary RNA transcript or by posttranslational modifications. We have previously demonstrated that an oncofetal fibronectin (FN) isoform derived by O-glycosylation is highly associated with malignancy in breast and oral tumors. Another oncofetal FN isoform containing the ED-B sequence is derived by alternative splicing, and FN containing ED-B has been found to be a stromal marker of malignancies in various tissues. Here we report a comparative study by immunohistology of the distribution of the ED

Are there diagnostic alternatives to histopathology in detecting oral cancer?

Background Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) include erythroplakia, erosive lichen planus, non-homogenous leukoplakia and many others. These lesions may revert to healthy tissues, remain unchanged, or undergo malignant change to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Early detection allows early management, which subsequently improves survival rates for OSCC. Current diagnostic practice involves a tissue biopsy with histology. This can be uncomfortable for patients and delays diagnosis. Other, less invasive diagnostic tests are available which can provide immediate results. Objectives

Exploring the Contribution of Curcumin to Cancer Therapy: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Although the anticancer role of curcumin has been extensively addressed in preclinical research, only a few studies were carried out in humans, with conflicting results. The aim of this systematic review is to collate together the results of the therapeutic effect of curcumin in cancer patients. A literature search was carried out in Pubmed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to 29 January 2023. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) designed to evaluate the effects of curcumin on cancer progression, patient survival, or surgical/histological response were incl

Exfoliative cytology as a tool for monitoring pre-malignant and malignant lesions based on combined stains and morphometry techniques.

BACKGROUND: Prevention and early diagnosis have the greatest potential for public health and are the most effective method in the long-term to control oral cancer. The aim was to apply PAP staining together with AgNOR staining and morphometric analysis in oral exfoliative cytology, to determine the sensitivity and specificity of these methods in the detection of malignant changes for the purposes of both initial population monitoring and follow-up. METHODS: AgNOR, Papanicolau, and morphometric tests were conducted in samples of patients with oral cancer, oral potentially malignant disorders a

A prototype tobacco-associated oral squamous cell carcinoma classifier using RNA from brush cytology.

BACKGROUND: Oral cancer in the form of squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is typically detected in advanced stages when treatment is complex and may not be curative. The need for surgical biopsy may contribute to delays in diagnosis and impede early detection. Multiple studies of RNA from surgically obtained tumor samples have revealed many genes differentially expressed with this disease. We sought to determine whether the identified mRNAs could be used as markers by a non-invasive detection system for OSCC using RNA from brush cytology. METHODS: Levels of mRNAs from 21 genes known to be differe

HIV infection: oral lesions, CD4+ cell count and viral load in an Italian study population.

The aims of this study were to assess types and prevalence of HIV-related oral lesions and to correlate these lesions to the main laboratory parameters such as CD4+ cell count and plasma HIV-RNA. The study population consisted of 104 consecutive HIV+ patients living in Sicily (M=67, 64.4%; F=37, 35.6%; median age=35 years). CD4+ cell count and viral load were measured within 24 h of oral examination. Data were managed and analysed by Epi-Info 6.0. HIV-related oral lesions, as classified by the EC-Clearinghouse, were diagnosed in 35.6% of patients: these were of the Strongly Associated (SA) typ

The Changing Clinical Spectrum of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-Related Oral Lesions in 1,000 Consecutive Patients: A 12-Year Study in a Referral Center in Mexico.

In developing countries, the variations in the clinical spectrum of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related oral lesions over time, and the possible effects of antiretroviral therapy, have not been described. In this study we evaluate the clinical spectrum of oral lesions in a series of HIV-infected patients when first examined at the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) clinic of a tertiary care institution in Mexico City, Mexico, and the changes observed over 12 years. All HIV-infected adult patients had an oral examination performed by specialists in oral pathology and medicine who
