Replication-deficient adenoviral vectors have been under investigation as a platform technology for vaccine development for several years and have recently been successfully deployed as an effective COVID-19 counter measure. A replication-deficient adenoviral vector based on the simian adenovirus type Y25 and named ChAdOx1 has been evaluated in several clinical trials since 2012. The Brighton Collaboration Benefit-Risk Assessment of VAccines by TechnolOgy (BRAVATO) was formed to evaluate the safety and other key features of new platform technology vaccines. This manuscript reviews key features

BACKGROUND: Serological diagnosis of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is challenging because of the antibody cross-reactivity among flaviviruses. At the same time, the role of Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) is limited by the low proportion of symptomatic infections and the low average viral load. Here, we compared the diagnostic performance of commercially available IgM, IgAM, and IgG ELISAs in sequential samples during the ZIKV and chikungunya (CHIKV) epidemics and co-circulation of dengue virus (DENV) in Brazil and Venezuela.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Acute (day of illness 1-5) and follow-up (

Various emerging diseases have been reported in recent years as epidemiologic monitoring improves. These infections can compromise the pregnancy, through adverse maternal outcomes, as well as the outcome for the child following transmission. We report a review of the literature concerning the most quoted emergent virus (H5N1, SARS Coronavirus, Chikungunya, West Nile virus), and relate the perinatal management.

BACKGROUND: Aedes-transmitted viral diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika are increasing public health and economic challenge globally. In the absence of treatments and vaccines for arboviral diseases, surveillance and control of Aedes larvae remains a top priority. However, Aedes larvae control strategies relay to a large extent on the knowledge of the distribution and characteristics of their habitats. The study assessed habitats, indices, habitat physico-chemical characteristics and composition of Aedes larvae and pupae in three towns.
METHODS: Aedes larvae and pupae

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Vector-borne diseases represent a huge global burden impacting health systems. Aedes aegypti is the main vector of arboviral diseases including dengue, Zika, chikungunya and urban yellow fever in both tropical and subtropical areas. Ethnopharmacological investigations provide potential avenues for developing new vector control strategies.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective of this study is to document the São Sebastião de Marinaú riverside community's ethnoknowledge of local plants used to control mosquitoes and perform bioguided fractionation to isolate the compo

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne arboviral infections (MBAI), including dengue and chikungunya viruses transmitted primarily by Aedes species and West Nile virus (WNV), transmitted mainly by Culex species, are increasingly reported in Europe. For Aedes-associated arboviruses, climate change and globalization contribute to the spread and establishment of competent vectors, while for WNV, climatic factors such as temperature and host-vector dynamics may enhance transmission in areas where the virus is already present. Physicians play a key role in early recognition and prevention of MBAI, yet data on

Mosquitoes are found in tropical and subtropical areas and are the carriers of a variety of diseases that are harmful to people's health. e.g., malaria, filariasis, chikungunya, dengue fever, etc. Although several insecticides are available, however, due to insect resistance and environmental hazards, more eco-friendly chemicals are needed for insect control. So, the current research was planned to explore the prospective of Mentha piperita to be used for the formulation of larvicides against mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus. The ethanolic and water extracts of M. piperita leaves were prepared

BACKGROUND: The incidence of microcephaly in Brazil in 2015 was 20 times higher than in previous years. Congenital microcephaly is associated with genetic factors and several causative agents. Epidemiological data suggest that microcephaly cases in Brazil might be associated with the introduction of Zika virus. We aimed to detect and sequence the Zika virus genome in amniotic fluid samples of two pregnant women in Brazil whose fetuses were diagnosed with microcephaly.
METHODS: In this case study, amniotic fluid samples from two pregnant women from the state of Paraíba in Brazil whose fetuses

BACKGROUND: Co-circulation of Plasmodium vivax and arboviruses is a significant but underexplored public health concern in tropical regions.
METHODS: We analyzed 300 serum samples collected between 2014 and 2015 from the Brazil-French Guiana border, including 102 malaria cases and 198 controls, using rapid tests for Immunoglobulin M (IgM), Immunoglobulin G (IgG), and Non-Structural Protein 1 (NS1).
RESULTS: High IgG reactivity for dengue and chikungunya viruses was observed. Co-reactivity was frequent. Zika virus detection was minimal.
CONCLUSIONS: The overlapping transmission of P. vivax a

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is one of the most invasive species in the world as well as the important vector for mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya fever and zika virus disease. Chemical control of mosquitoes is an effective method to control mosquito-borne diseases, however, the wide and improper application of insecticides for vector control has led to serious resistance problems. At present, there have been many reports on the resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in vector mosquitoes including deltamethrin to Aedes albopictus. However, the fitness cost and vector co

BACKGROUND: Epidemic arbovirus transmission occurs among humans by mosquito bites and the sylvatic transmission cycles involving non-human primates (NHPs) still exists. However, limited data are available on the extent in NHPs infections and their role. In this study, we have developed and validated a high-throughput serological screening tool to study the circulation of multiple arboviruses that represent a significant threat to human health, in NHPs in Central Africa.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Recombinant proteins NS1, envelope domain-3 (DIII) for the dengue (DENV), yellow fever (YFV)

This report describes the epidemiology of mosquito-borne diseases of public health importance in Australia during the 2013-14 season (1 July 2013 to 30 June 2014) and includes data from human notifications, sentinel chicken, vector and virus surveillance programs. The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System received notifications for 8,898 cases of disease transmitted by mosquitoes during the 2013-14 season. The Australasian alphaviruses Barmah Forest virus and Ross River virus accounted for 6,372 (72%) total notifications. However, over-diagnosis and possible false positive diagnosti

Mosquito-borne viruses continue to affect billions of people globally, posing a severe health risk and an economic burden. Aedes albopictus (Skuse), a highly invasive mosquito species, has repeatedly invaded and increased its presence, serving as a key vector of dengue virus, yellow fever virus (YFV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), causing frequent outbreaks of related viral diseases. This study investigated the impact of larval diet quantity on larval duration and adult body size. The effect of adult mosquito body size on various aspects of Ae. albopictus was also examined,

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean Basin is historically a hotspot for trade, transport, and migration. As a result, countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea share common public health threats. Among them are vector-borne diseases, and in particular, mosquito-borne viral diseases are prime candidates as (re)emerging diseases and are likely to spread across the area. Improving preparedness and response capacities to these threats at the regional level is therefore a major issue. The implementation of entomological surveillance is, in particular, of utmost importance. Guidance in designing entomol

A 30-year-old man with recent diagnosis of HIV-infection was seen in the hospital, because of a 1-month history of swollen lips, painful oral mucosa ulcers, cervical lymph nodes and skin lesions. The medical history showed a previous patient contact with 10 subjects, with positivity for Monkeypox virus in 8 subjects. A week later, he began with lesions on the genitals, managed with acyclovir, and subsequent development of manifestations in the mouth and skin, with dissemination to the entire body. He was admitted to our clinic for increased volume in penis and scrotum, and a disseminated derma

Co-epidemics happening simultaneously can generate a burden on healthcare systems. The co-occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 with vector-borne diseases (VBD), such as malaria and dengue in resource-limited settings represents an additional challenge to the healthcare systems. Herein, we assessed the coinfection rate between SARS-CoV-2 and VBD to highlight the need to carry out an accurate diagnosis and promote timely measures for these infections in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 105 subjects tested for the SARS-CoV-2 and VBD with a rapid detection te

UNLABELLED: Plus-strand RNA viruses are the largest group of viruses. Many are human pathogens that inflict a socio-economic burden. Interestingly, plus-strand RNA viruses share remarkable similarities in their replication. A hallmark of plus-strand RNA viruses is the remodeling of intracellular membranes to establish replication organelles (so-called "replication factories"), which provide a protected environment for the replicase complex, consisting of the viral genome and proteins necessary for viral RNA synthesis. In the current study, we investigate pan-viral similarities and virus-specif
