Prevalence of skin disorders in school children in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Although skin diseases are common in children, there are very few population-based studies in West Africa. Recently, there has been considerable emphasis on hygiene and socio-economic impact on the incidence of allergic disorders in children. We determined the prevalence of skin diseases in a public primary school in Ibadan (southwest Nigeria). A questionnaire for assessing factors associated with the prevalence of diseases was completed, and a complete physical examination was carried out on 1066 students. The study included 529 (49.6%) boys and 537 (50.4%) girls with a mean age of 8.8 +/- 2.

Lifelong severe verrucosis associated with human papillomavirus type 2: report of a case with a 38-year follow-up.

We describe a 67-year-old woman with disseminated warts which she had had for more than 38 years. The lesions consisted of common and plane warts, wart-like plaques and red-brownish macules similar to those in pityriasis versicolor. Furthermore, during follow-up, several solar keratoses, plaques of Bowen's disease and invasive squamous cell carcinomas were excised. The patient also had T-cell immunodeficiency of unknown aetiology. Histopathology demonstrated that all the warts showed the cytopathological features of common warts, but not those of the warts in epidermodysplasia verruciformis (E

Skin diseases in Bamako (Mali).

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases have only recently been considered as a possible public health problem in developing countries. Data supporting this matter are scarce. The aim of this study is to report the experience of a specialized dermatologic center in Bamako (Mali) in order to complete two previous studies conducted in the Bamako area: a prevalence study in the general population and a study in nonspecialized health centers of Bamako. It is our intention to provide a comprehensive picture of the problem of skin diseases in an African developing country. METHODS: We retrospectively collected a

Reticulate, patchy and mottled pigmentation of the neck. Acquired forms.

Besides the inherited forms of mottled and reticulate pigmentation, a vast number of diseases and trigger mechanisms can lead to acquired pigmentation of the neck. Nonhereditary variants of reticulate and mottled pigmentation can affect the neck as a typical site and therefore may give a diagnostic clue or it can occur sporadically on the neck as well as on other sites. A well-known and important factor in the pathogenesis is exposure to sunlight. Sun-induced pigmentation often presents on the neck and may result from phototoxic, photoallergic and cumulative actinic damage. Frequent forms comp

Hydrolase activity of 150 Malassezia furfur isolates of different clinical origin.

Apart from pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia furfur is thought to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of seborrhoic eczema and Malassezia folliculitis. However, it has not been clarified whether in addition to host factors (e.g. immune status, greasy skin), yeast-dependent activities are responsible for manifestation of the disease. In this context interstrain variability of hydrolase activity of Malassezia isolates might be significant. For determination of hydrolase activity, washed yeast suspension was applied to selective agar for pathogenic fungi containing 8% (v/v) Tween 80 or Tw

Management of common superficial fungal infections in patients with AIDS.

Cutaneous fungal infections are a major source of morbidity in HIV-infected patients, and their management poses special challenges. Superficial mycoses, such as tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and onychomycosis, are no more common in HIV-infected patients than in the HIV-negative population but are of greater severity. Although they respond to topical and systemic antifungal agents, HIV-positive patients are predisposed to frequent recurrences. Unusual types of fungal infections such as Majocchi's granuloma are more likely to develop in HIV-infected patients and respond best to sys

Onchodermatitis--correlation between skin disease and parasitic load in an endemic focus in Ecuador.

Onchocerciasis is a chronic parasitic infection in which infiltration of the skin by microfilariae has been associated with a number of different pathological changes. This survey compared the prevalence of different forms of skin disease in two villages, one of which was located within the endemic zone for onchocerciasis (Zapallo Grande), in a lowland rain forest area of western Ecuador. The commonest skin diseases in both villages were scabies, pyoderma and pityriasis versicolor. In addition changes closely correlated with the presence of microfilariae in skin snips were found in Zapallo Gra

[New developments relating to papillomaviruses].

Molecular hybridization technique and immunofluorescence studies with use of specific immune sera against the purified virions isolated from various types of warts and wart-like lesions of epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) made it possible to detect four different types of human papilloma viruses (HPV). The recognition of the viruses is important because of the different morphology of the lesions induced and their various oncogenic potentials. HPV1 is mainly responsible for plantar warts, HPV2 for common (hand) warts, HPV3 has been found both in flat warts and in the variety of EV in which

Recalcitrant Pustular Dermatosis Successfully Treated With Prolonged Isotretinoin Therapy.

Isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) is a well-established systemic treatment for moderate to severe acne vulgaris, renowned for its ability to target multiple contributors to acne pathogenesis. However, its therapeutic potential extends beyond conventional acne management. This case report highlights its efficacy in treating recalcitrant pustular dermatosis, a condition that proved resistant to standard therapies and posed significant diagnostic challenges. A 25-year-old female patient presented with a diffuse, inflamed pustular rash that was unresponsive to a wide range of conventional treatm

Erythroderma in the elderly.

Erythroderma is the end-stage condition caused by various inflammatory diseases, presenting with widespread generalized coalesced erythema on the trunk and extremities. Erythroderma is not a disease itself, but rather is a symptom expressing erythrodermic condition, which is frequently associated with inguinal lymphadenopathy, chills, and mild fever. The clinical characteristics include sparing the folds of the trunk and extremities (deck-chair sign), and cobblestone-like disseminated grouping prurigo; however, the deck-chair sign is not specific to papulo-erythroderma (Ofuji disease). Erythro

Tracking Mycoviruses in Public RNAseq Datasets of Malassezia: Three Original Totiviruses Revealed.

Mycoviruses are viruses that selectively infect and multiply in fungal cells. Malassezia is the most abundant fungus on human skin and is associated with a variety of conditions, including atopic eczema, atopic dermatitis, dandruff, folliculitis, pityriasis versicolor, and seborrheic dermatitis. Here, we conducted mycovirome studies on 194 public transcriptomes of Malassezia (2,568,212,042 paired-end reads) screened against all available viral proteins. Transcriptomic data were assembled de novo resulting in 1,170,715 contigs and 2,995,306 open reading frames (ORFs) that were subsequently trac

Antagonistic Activity of Antimicrobial Metabolites Produced from Seaweed-Associated Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 10456 Against Malassezia spp.

Members of the genus Malassezia are known to be opportunistic pathogens responsible for causing skin disorders such as seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff, pityriasis versicolor, folliculitis, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. Due to the side effects caused by prolonged use of current topical antifungal agents, development of an alternative treatment is necessary. Fermentative production of antimicrobial metabolites from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 10456 was carried out, and their antagonistic activity against Malassezia furfur and Malassezia globosa was evaluated. The antifungal metabolites
