Sensitization to the yeast Malassezia sympodialis is specific for extrinsic and intrinsic atopic eczema.

The opportunistic yeast Malassezia sympodialis belongs to the normal cutaneous flora but can also cause IgE-mediated sensitization in patients suffering from atopic eczema (AE). We investigated 706 individuals by ImmunoCAPm70 and skin-prick tests with a crude M. sympodialis extract. In AE patients, we further performed skin prick tests, atopy patch tests, ELISA, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells proliferation assays with recombinant M. sympodialis allergens (rMala s 1 and 5-9). In 52/97 patients with AE-specific IgE against M. sympodialis was detectable. Almost no reactivity to M. sympodi

Malassezia furfur in infantile seborrheic dermatitis.

Our objective was to study both incidence and various strains of Malassezia in infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD). Sixty infants between 2 weeks and 2 years old with clinical diagnosis of ISD at the Department of Pediatrics, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital from May 2002 to April 2003 were recruited. Malassezia spp. were isolated from cultured skin samples of the patients, genomic DNA was extracted and the ITS1 rDNA region was amplified. The PCR product was examined by agarose gel electrophoresis and DNA sequences were determined. The ITS1 sequences were also subjected to phylogenetic a

Disseminated fusariosis.

A 7-year-old boy with T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia developed disseminated hyalohyphomycosis due to Fusarium solani. The clinical features included fever, severe myalgia, documented fungemia with F. solani, an ecthyma gangrenosum-like lesion next to a peripheral venous catheter, and disseminated pustules. Severe neutropenia due to chemotherapy was the most relevant risk factor. Histopathologic study of the ecthyma gangrenosum-like lesion, as well as pustular lesions, revealed epidermal necrosis and an inflammatory infiltrate in the upper dermis, with numerous septate hyphae demonstrated

Antifungal Effects of Citrus maxima Cultivar Tubtim-Siam Peel Extract Against Malassezia pachydermatis Isolated from Dogs.

Otitis externa in dogs is primarily caused by Malassezia pachydermatis. Treatment involves antifungal and antiseptic agents; however, resistance among causative organisms has been noted. Pomelo (Citrus maxima) is a source of bioactive compounds with antimicrobial activity. Its extract mainly includes essential oils, which are mostly applied for alternative treatment for M. pachydermatis. The study aimed to investigate the anti-M. pachydermatis effects of pomelo peel extracts and their potential use in topical solutions for canine infections. M. pachydermatis was isolated from dogs and confirme

Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii Infection in HIV-Seronegative Patients from Northeast India: Report of Two Cases with Review of Literature.

Cryptococcus neoformans infection can occur in a wide range of hosts ranging from those who are severely immunosuppressed to those who are apparently immunocompetent. Two apparently immunocompetent HIV-seronegative patients with cryptococcal meningitis and multiple skin lesions, both due to C. neoformans var. grubii, are reported. Pregnancy was found as an associated factor in cryptococcal meningitis in a 20-year-old female patient from Arunachal Pradesh. Multiple skin lesions were the presenting feature of an 18-year-old male patient from Dibrugarh, eastern Assam. The organism was identified

Clinical and Laboratory Features of Six Cases of Candida and Dermatophyte Folliculitis and a Review of Published Studies.

Although some studies have investigated the epidemiological characteristics of Malassezia folliculitis (MF), little is known about the clinical features and laboratory characteristics of folliculitis caused by other fungi. In this prospective study, 158 patients with folliculitis were identified, and cytological and mycological examinations were performed. The positive fungal cultures were confirmed using conventional methods, ITS sequencing and HWP1 analysis. Additionally, an in vitro antifungal susceptibility test was performed. Of 158 patients with folliculitis, 65 (41.1 %) were found to ha

[Diabetic foot infections: microbiological aspects].

The diagnosis of wound infection is based on clinical signs and local and/or systemic inflammation. Therefore, the examination has a major role in the diagnosis of infected lesions of the foot. Once the clinical diagnosis of infection is made, the next step is to determine the etiology with the aim to undertake a rational and appropriate treatment. The most reliable method for assessing microbiological etiology is the specimen of material from infected lesion to perform a bacterioscopic examination and culture. The microorganisms involved in the etiology of diabetic foot depends on the type of
