Risk factors for olfactory dysfunction in chronic rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: Although risk factors for olfactory dysfunction in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) have been examined, most studies did not distinguish between classified eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) and noneosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (NECRS). The incidence of eosinophilic disease in Japan differs from that in the West. Thus, when olfaction in CRS is investigated, ECRS and NECRS should be examined separately. In the present study, we examined the clinical characteristics associated with olfactory dysfunction in Japanese patients with ECRS and NECRS enrolled in a lar

Computed tomography of the anterior skull base in Kallmann syndrome reveals specific ethmoid bone abnormalities associated with olfactory bulb defects.

CONTEXT: Kallmann syndrome (KS) is characterized by congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) and an impaired sense of smell related to defective development of the olfactory system. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to use high-resolution computed tomography (CT) to detect specific abnormalities in the ethmoid bone region surrounding the olfactory bulbs in patients with KS. PATIENTS: Thirty-seven KS patients were compared to normosmic CHH (nCHH) patients (n = 15) and controls (n = 30) of similar age. DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in a single referral center. S

Olfactory impairment in an adult population: the Beaver Dam Offspring Study.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of olfactory impairment and associated risk factors and the effects of olfactory impairment on dietary choices and quality of life. Odor identification was measured in 2838 participants aged 21-84 years (mean 49 years) in the Beaver Dam Offspring Study. The overall prevalence of olfactory impairment was 3.8%, increased with age (from 0.6% in those<35 years to 13.9% among those≥65 years) and was more common in men than women. In a multivariate model age (odds ratio [OR]=1.48, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.33, 1.64 for every 5-year inc

Decreased FGF8 signaling causes deficiency of gonadotropin-releasing hormone in humans and mice.

Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) with anosmia (Kallmann syndrome; KS) or with a normal sense of smell (normosmic IHH; nIHH) are heterogeneous genetic disorders associated with deficiency of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). While loss-of-function mutations in FGF receptor 1 (FGFR1) cause human GnRH deficiency, to date no specific ligand for FGFR1 has been identified in GnRH neuron ontogeny. Using a candidate gene approach, we identified 6 missense mutations in FGF8 in IHH probands with variable olfactory phenotypes. These patients exhibited varied degrees of GnRH deficiency,

Changes in mitotic rate and GFAP expression in the primary olfactory axis of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Many diabetic individuals develop anosmia but the mechanism(s) causing the dysfunction in the olfactory system is (are) unknown. Glial fibrillary acidic protein expression is reduced in diabetic retinopathy and is also reduced, with unknown consequences, in other brain regions of diabetic rats. We used immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting from untreated control and streptozotocin-induced type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetic rats to investigate main olfactory epithelial mitotic rate and glial fibrillary acidic protein expression in the lamina propria of the sensory epithelium and in the olfac

[Semiologic study of chronic perennial and permanent paranasal sinus dysfunction. Prevalence of symptoms].

Rhino-sinus dysfunction is associated with several symptoms: nasal obstruction, anterior and posterior rhinorrhea, episodes of sneezing, painful or heavy feeling in the face, taste and smell disorders. Certain manifestations have an impact on the pharynx, the larynx or the tracheobronchial tree. This prospective study was conducted in 449 consecutive patients who consulted over an 18-months period from November 1995 to May 1997. The objective was to determine the symptom pattern, main disease of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses which were involved: chronic rhinitis, anterior sinusitis,

[Magnetic resonance imaging of the olfactory pathways in Kallmann de Morsier syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Kallmann syndrome is a disease clinically characterized by the association of hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism and anosmia or hyposmia. Most cases have been recorded among men. It is a genetic disorder with a specific gene location on the X chromosome. The cells that normally express luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone or LHRH fail to migrate the olfactory placode to the forebrain. The lateral projections of the olfactory placode also fail to induce development of the olfactory bulbs and tracts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim of this study was to compare the MRI appearance of the

Combination of 'idiopathic' REM sleep behaviour disorder and olfactory dysfunction as possible indicator for alpha-synucleinopathy demonstrated by dopamine transporter FP-CIT-SPECT.

REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) and olfactory dysfunction are common and very early features of alpha-synucleinopathies, in particular Parkinson's disease. To investigate the hypothesis that these two clinical features in combination are an indicator of evolving alpha-synucleinopathy, olfactory function was assessed in RBD. We studied 30 patients (18 male, 12 female; mean age 48 +/- 14 years, range 19-78 years) with clinical (idiopathic, n = 6; symptomatic, n = 13, mostly associated with narcolepsy) or subclinical (n = 11, associated with narcolepsy) RBD according to standard criteria and 3

Post-COVID-19 Hyposmia Does Not Exhibit Main Neurodegeneration Markers in the Olfactory Pathway.

The biological substrate of persistent post-COVID-19 hyposmia is still unclear. However, as many neurodegenerative diseases present with smell impairment at onset, it may theoretically reflect degeneration within the central olfactory circuits. However, no data still exist regarding the post-COVID-19 patients. As the olfactory neurons (ONs) mirror pathological changes in the brain, allowing for tracking the underlying molecular events, here, we performed a broad analysis of ONs from patients with persistent post-COVID-19 OD to identify traces of potential neurodegeneration. ONs were collected

Symptom Criteria for COVID-19 Testing of Heath Care Workers.

BACKGROUND: Symptom criteria for COVID-19 testing of heath care workers (HCWs) limitations on testing availability have been challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic. An evidence-based symptom criteria for identifying HCWs for testing, based on the probability of positive COVID-19 test results, would allow for a more appropriate use of testing resources. METHODS: This was an observational study of outpatient COVID-19 testing of HCWs. Prior to testing, HCWs were asked about the presence of 10 symptoms. Their responses were then compared to their subsequent pharyngeal swab COVID-19 polymerase c

The effect of intranasal sodium citrate on olfaction in post-infectious loss: results from a prospective, placebo-controlled trial in 49 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Free calcium plays an integral role in peripheral olfactory processing, including feedback inhibition. It has therefore been suggested that reduction of intranasal free calcium with buffer solutions such as sodium citrate may improve olfactory function in patients with smell impairment. Several previous studies have supported this hypothesis, particularly in post-infectious olfactory loss. We therefore aimed to determine whether treatment with intranasal sodium citrate improves olfactory function in patients with post-infectious impairment. DESIGN: Prospective, single-blind, place

Impact of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfaction and use of alternative components in odor threshold measurement.

BACKGROUND: One of the major causes of olfactory disturbances is chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), and the main surgical modality to treat CRS is functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). It, therefore, is essential to assess the effect of this surgery on olfaction. Also, it is necessary to find new ways of measuring olfaction so as to reduce dependability on standard tests available. OBJECTIVES: To study the prevalence of olfactory impairment in patients with CRS and to evaluate the impact of FESS on olfaction. The study also aims at investigating the use of other odorants in place of butanol-

Olfactory function following nasal surgery: a 1-year follow-up.

Olfactory dysfunction is a frequent symptom of nasal and sinunasal disease. Many of these patients undergo nasal sinus or nasal septum surgery. In this study, we evaluated the benefit of nasal surgery on olfactory function over a period of 12 months. Patients included in this study underwent either nasal sinus or nasal septum surgery. All patients were tested for olfactory function using the "Sniffin' sticks" 16 item odor identification test. In addition, patients were asked to rate their nasal patency as well as their olfactory function at each visit. 157 patients were tested 3.5 months after

Olfactory performance before and after lung transplantation: quantitative assessment and impact on quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Although olfactory function significantly impacts quality of life (QoL) and factors that potentially interfere with the sense of smell are numerous in solid-organ recipients, no respective data exist for this population. In this study we investigate the olfactory function, QoL, and the accuracy of subjectively perceived olfactory dysfunction. METHODS: Olfactory performance was assessed with the aid of a validated test battery (Sniffin' Sticks) in 70 randomly selected lung transplant recipients and 22 patients on the lung transplant waiting list. In addition to assess QoL, the Ques

Two cases of Kallmann syndrome associated with empty sella.

Kallmann syndrome (KS) is a developmental disease characterized by the association of isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia/hyposmia. We report an unusual presentation of two females with KS and empty sella. These females, aged at 20 and 29-year-old, presented primary amenorrhea with prepubertal estradiol and low gonadotropin levels. No other significant clinical signs were observed. Empty sella was observed on MRI in both cases. Sequencing of FGFR1 gene, recently implicated in autosomal form of KS, was performed and one splicing mutation (IVS14 + 1G > A) was identified in one pat

Prevalence of nasal polyposis in France: a cross-sectional, case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of nasal polyposis (NP) has never been established in France due to the lack of diagnostic tools for population-based studies. METHODS: Using a recently validated questionnaire/algorithm (90% specificity and sensitivity) in a population-based random sample, the present cross-sectional, case-control study allowed to determine NP prevalence and describe the principal aspects of NP epidemiology. A total of 10 033 subjects (>/=18 years) were screened. After identification of subjects with NP and those without, another questionnaire was submitted to NP patients only for
