Performance on the ROCF at 8 Years Predicts Academic Achievement at 16 Years in Individuals with Dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined longitudinal associations between performance on the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure-Developmental Scoring System (ROCF-DSS) at 8 years of age and academic outcomes at 16 years of age in 133 children with dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA). METHOD: The ROCF-DSS was administered at the age of 8 and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, First and Second Edition (WIAT/WIAT-II) at the ages of 8 and 16, respectively. ROCF-DSS protocols were classified by Organization (Organized/Disorganized) and Style (Part-oriented/Holistic). Two-way univariate (RO

A 10-year Study of the Academic Progress of Students Identified as Low Performers after Their First Semester of Pharmacy School.

Objective. To examine whether pharmacy students characterized as low performers at the conclusion of their first semester remained low performers throughout their academic career. Methods. Bottom quartile performance on first semester grade point average (GPA) was compared to licensing examination success, cumulative grade point average at the end of the didactic education and whether the student graduated on time, using cross tabulation analysis. Relative risk ratios and confidence intervals were calculated. Results. Students in the bottom quartile for GPA at the end of their first semester i

BACKGROUND: King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) was the first university in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia offering both high school entry and graduate entry (GE) students into medical school. We compared the academic performance and professionalism lapses of high school entry and GE students who undertook the same curriculum and examinations in the College of Medicine, Riyadh, KSAU-HS. METHODS: Examination scores of 196 high school graduates and 54 GE students over a 4-year period (2010-2014) were used as a measure of academic achievement. For assessment of professi

Oral Clefts and Academic Performance in Adolescence: The Impact of Anesthesia-Related Neurotoxicity, Timing of Surgery, and Type of Oral Clefts.

OBJECTIVE: Early life exposure to anesthesia and surgery is suspected to associate with cognitive impairment later in life. We compared academic achievement among adolescents with cleft lip only (CL), cleft palate only (CP), and cleft lip and cleft palate (CLP) with a noncleft control group to investigate whether outcome depends on timing and number of operations during childhood and/or type of oral cleft. DESIGN: Nationwide register-based follow-up study. SETTING: Danish birth cohort 1986 to 1990. PARTICIPANTS: Five hundred fifty-eight children with isolated CL (n = 171), CLP (n = 222), or

Impact of the Life is Precious™ Program on Academic Performance and School Functioning Among Latina Adolescents at Risk of Suicide.

This exploratory study examines the impact of Life is Precious™ (LIP), a treatment-adjacent afterschool program, on academic performance and school functioning among Latina adolescents at risk of suicide. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the study compared the outcomes of LIP participants with individuals receiving usual care (UC) over a 12-month period. Results included a statistically significant group-by-time interaction on academic performance, indicating that the LIP group's grades improved over time while the UC group's grades declined. Though LIP was not significantly associated w

Major Radiologic and Clinical Outcomes of Total Spine MRI Performed in the Emergency Department at a Major Academic Medical Center.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Total spine MRIs are requested by the emergency department when focused imaging can not be ordered on the basis of history or clinical findings. However, their efficacy is not known. We assessed the following: 1) major radiologic and clinical outcomes of total spine MR imaging performed by the emergency department, and 2) whether the presence of a high-risk clinical profile and/or neurologic findings impacts the clinical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total spine MRIs requested by the emergency department during a 28-month period were evaluated for major radiologic (

The prevalence of hearing loss among schoolchildren with chronic suppurative otitis media in Nigeria, and its effect on academic performance.

We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of hearing loss among 1,500 Nigerian schoolchildren aged 9 to 15 years who had chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). We also attempted to ascertain the effect that this hearing loss had on their academic performance. The study population was drawn from three schools in different socioeconomic tiers-low (n = 300), medium (n = 400), and high (n = 800). Overall, CSOM was present in 35 of these children (2.3%)-12 from the low-status school (4.0%), 11 from the middle-status school (2.8%), and 12 from the high-status school (1.5%);

Understanding time as a predictor of mental health, academic performance, and help-seeking behavior among undergraduates: a mixed methods analysis.

Objective: This study examines how time pressure (subjective sense of rush) and time scarcity (lack of weekly non-committed hours) relate to mental health and academic performance. Participants: The sample included 646 undergraduates (65.3% female; mean age = 19.4). Method: Participants completed a mixed-methods survey assessing time use, time pressure, mental health, and academic performance at a single time point. Results: We found that time pressure predicts increased anxiety and depression, whereas time scarcity predicts decreased depression. Time pressure predicts poorer academic performa

Effects of Symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) on Academic Performance and Educational Attainment.

The aim of this longitudinal population-based cohort study was to examine the effects of ADHD and ODD symptoms in adolescence on academic performance at age 16, and on educational attainment by the age of 32. The population studied here was the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC1986). The participants were classified into four groups: those with symptoms of ADHD, ODD, ADHD + ODD, and a control group. Early academic performance at the age of 16 years was based on the Joint Application Register for Secondary Education, and eventual educational attainment was derived from the registers of S

The Associations Between Sluggish Cognitive Tempo, Internalizing Symptoms, and Academic Performance in Children With Reading Disorder: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) was associated with anxiety, depression, and academic performance (AP) in children with reading disorder (RD), and whether ADHD-Inattention (ADHD-IN) moderated these relationships. METHOD: Parents and teachers of children with RD (N = 147, ages 6-18) completed evaluations of SCT, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and AP, every 3 months for 18 months. To what extent does punishment insensitivity explain the relationship between callous-unemotional traits and academic performance in secondary school students?

BACKGROUND: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are related to low achievement but not to deficits in verbal ability, commonly regarded as a major risk factor for poor academic outcomes in antisocial youth. This suggests that CU traits may have utility in explaining heterogeneous risk pathways for poor school performance in antisocial children. Reduced sensitivity to teacher discipline has been suggested as a potential explanation for the association between CU traits and low achievement, given its importance in facilitating engagement in learning. This study is the first to examine punishment ins
