Annual rhythms of thyroid hormone signaling: Environmental influences on thyroid function and disease implications.

Hormones within the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis play a central role in acclimatization, dynamically responding to nutritional, thermal, and photoperiodic cues to coordinate metabolic, thermoregulatory, and reproductive functions. Abundant food elevates thyroid hormone (TH), driving energy storage and foraging behaviors, while scarcity reduces TH levels, inducing energy-saving states like hypometabolism or hibernation, in which TH-leptin crosstalk is important. Cold exposure upregulates TH to enhance mitochondrial thermogenesis, with TH acting as a pivotal mediator in the coordina

Endocrine mechanisms of seasonal adaptation in small mammals: from early results to present understanding.

Seasonal adaptation is widespread among mammals of temperate and polar latitudes. The changes in physiology, morphology and behaviour are controlled by the photoneuroendocrine system that, as a first step, translates day lengths into a hormonal signal (melatonin). Decoding of the humoral melatonin signal, i.e. responses on the cellular level to slight alterations in signal duration, represents the prerequisite for appropriate timing of winter acclimatization in photoperiodic animals. Corresponding to the diversity of affected traits, several hormone systems are involved in the regulation downs

The pregnant altitude visitor.

The human fetus develops normally under low-oxygen conditions. Exposure of a pregnant woman to the hypoxia of high altitude results in acclimatization responses which act to preserve the fetal oxygen supply. The fetus also utilizes several compensatory mechanisms to survive brief periods of hypoxia. While fetal heart rate monitoring data during air travel suggest no compromise of fetal oxygenation, exercise at high altitude may place further stress on oxygen delivery to the fetus. The limited data on maternal exercise at high altitude suggest good tolerance in most pregnancies; however, short-

Carotid body excision significantly changes ventilatory control in awake rats.

We determined the effects of carotid body excision (CBX) on eupneic ventilation and the ventilatory responses to acute hypoxia, hyperoxia, and chronic hypoxia in unanesthetized rats. Arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) and calculated minute alveolar ventilation to minute metabolic CO2 production (VA/VCO2) ratio were used to determine the ventilatory responses. The effects of CBX and sham operation were compared with intact controls (PaCO2 = 40.0 +/- 0.1 Torr, mean +/- 95% confidence limits, and VA/VCO2 = 21.6 +/- 0.1). CBX rats showed 1) chronic hypoventilation with respiratory acidosis, which was maintaine

The Challenges of the Camel Welfare in Western Countries.

Camels are increasingly kept in Europe and other Western countries for tourism, leisure, sport, and production, raising questions about their acclimatization to environmental and husbandry conditions differing from traditional camel-rearing regions. This narrative review examines camel presence in Western countries, adaptations to desert environments, and conditions encountered in these new contexts. Potential welfare challenges are then discussed according to the four Welfare Quality® principles, while management and human-animal interactions are considered as cross-cutting factors in accorda

Motion sickness and sense of presence in a virtual reality environment developed for manual wheelchair users, with three different approaches.

Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS) is a bothersome and sometimes unsafe experience, frequently experienced in Virtual Reality (VR) environments. In this study, the effect of up to four training sessions to decrease VIMS in the VR environment to a minimal level was tested and verified through explicit declarations of all 14 healthy participants that were recruited in this study. Additionally, the Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire (MSAQ) was used at the end of each training session to measure responses to different aspects of VIMS. Total, gastrointestinal, and central motion sickness

The course of Plasmodium berghei, P. chabaudi and P. yoelii infections in beta-thalassaemic mice.

In order to study the effects of acclimatization of Plasmodium in beta-thalassaemic mice, we used a mouse model of beta-thalassaemia (DBA/2J/beta-thal/beta-thal), similar to that observed in humans. We acclimatized 3 rodent malarias (P. berghei, P. chabaudi and P. yoelii) in DBA/2J and DBA/2J/beta-thal mice lines, by 4 intraperitoneal serial transfers. All 3 rodent malarias developed in red blood cells of beta-thalassaemic mice without losing their virulence. There was no delay in infection and peaks of parasitaemia were similar in beta-thalassaemic and normal mice. The mortality occurred earl

Chemoreceptor sensitivity and maladaptation to high altitude in man.

Studies were carried out to find out the role of chemoreceptor sensitivity in the causation of maladaptation syndromes on acute exposure to altitude. The experiments were done in two phases. In phase I, the responses in chemoreceptor sensitivity were studied in altitude acclimatized subjects and compared with those who suffered from either High Altitude Pulmonary Oedema (HAPO) or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). In Phase II, a similar comparison was done in two groups of subjects, one representing normal sojourners at 3,500 m and the other being subjects who had just recovered from HAPO. The fir

The assessment proposal for long-term and short-term tolerable hygrothermal microclimatic conditions.

A group of four efficient mine rescuers 25 to 35 years old were exposed to a load of a cyclo-ergometer (stages A and B) and a hand ergometer (stage E) in a climate chamber. The total 120 min period of work was divided into four work intervals, 30 min each. There were 5-min breaks between the individual intervals. The load on the ergometer was selected in the range of 25 to 150 W, Tg=20 to 40 degrees C, rh=40 to 80% and v(a)=0.2 to 1.5 m x s(-1). The thermal resistance of the working suit was 0.65 clo at stage A, 1.07 clo at stage B and 0.81 clo at stage E. A total of 200 experiments with 50 co

Adaptation to chronic hypercapnia drives time- and region-dependent changes in brainstem cardiorespiratory nuclei.

Hypercapnia occurs in numerous clinical conditions, both acutely and chronically. We previously demonstrated in healthy goats that chronic hypercapnia (CH) produced by exposure to elevated inspired CO2 leads to a sustained increase in minute ventilation, despite dynamic changes in acute CO2 sensitivity across the first week of exposure. Specifically, steady-state ventilation increased during CH, whereas acute CO2 sensitivity was transiently blunted at 24 h and returned toward baseline after 7 days. These findings suggest that ventilatory acclimatization to CH is not solely explained by changes

No altitude required: differential ventilatory and blood acid-base homeostasis between unacclimatized lowlanders and Tibetan highlanders at 1,400 m.

Tibetan highlanders (TH) possess physiological adaptations supporting ventilation, oxygenation, and acid-base regulation with acclimatization to chronic hypobaric hypoxia. Although well-characterized at high altitude, it is unclear whether these traits are evident at low altitude, independent of environmental hypoxic stimuli. To evaluate baseline physiological differences, we compared variables related to ventilatory, blood oxygen, and acid-base balance between unacclimatized ancestral lowlanders (LL; n = 29) and TH (n = 31) residing at 1,400 m, a subthreshold altitude not expected to elicit v

Acute mountain sickness -- experience on the roof of Africa expedition and military implications.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a potentially severe problem for military exercises and operations and may present in a variety of ways as was the case on the "Roof of Africa" Expedition 1990. Four cases are described and the pathophysiology of AMS is discussed. Gradual acclimatization to increasing altitude will decrease the incidence of AMS, but pharmacological prophylaxis is recommended when time is short, acetazolamide being the drug of choice.

[Trichinelliasis in the wild and domestic animals of Kamchatka Province].

The results of many years' observations and literature data allowed one to determine the species of wild and domestic mammalians, vectors of trichinelliasis in Kamchatka. The variability of trichinelliasis prevalence in individual mammalian species were found in relation to their habitation place. Significant fluctuations of the index are presented by years. Cases of trichinelliasis in wild American minks (acclimatized species) and in pigs were noted.

High-altitude illness: Management approach.

In high altitudes, usually above 2500 m, travelers are faced with decreased partial pressure of oxygen along with decreased barometric pressure. High-altitude illness, a syndrome of acute mountain sickness, high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude pulmonary edema, occurs due to the hypobaric hypoxia when there is inadequate acclimatization. This review provides detailed information about pathophysiology, clinical features, prevention and treatment strategies for high-altitude illness according to the current literature.

Hot weather, exercise, old age, and the kidneys.

Thirst is not a very accurate measure of water need; optimal fluid replacement may lag 2 to 3 days behind actual needs, particularly for persons unaccustomed to a hot climate. If an older person begins an exercise program during warm weather or travels to a warmer climate, the intensity and duration of exercise should be restrained initially, then gradually increased over 10 to 14 days to allow for acclimatization.

Multi-stage planning of LID-GREI urban drainage systems in response to land-use changes.

Long-term planning of urban drainage systems aimed at maintaining the sustainability of urban hydrology remains challenging. In this study, an innovative multi-stage planning framework involving two adaptation pathways for optimizing hybrid low impact development and grey infrastructure (LID-GREI) layouts in opposing chronological orders was explored. The Forward Planning and Backward Planning are adaptation pathways to increase LID in chronological order based on the initial development stage of an urban built-up area and reduce LID in reverse chronological order based on the final developmen

High-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude pulmonary edema in a trekker with a decent ascent profile: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: High-altitude illness (HAI) comprises a spectrum of disorders, including acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE). Although gradual ascent is the most effective preventive strategy, severe complications such as HAPE and HACE can still occur in susceptible individuals despite recommended ascent profiles. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old male trekker in the Manang Valley (3350 m) developed HAPE and HACE despite gradual ascent and 6 days of acclimatization. He presented with severe headache, nausea,
