Perspectives on sexual and reproductive health2025eng
INTRODUCTION: China's one-child policy was implemented in 1980 primarily through mandatory intrauterine devices, tubal surgery, or abortion for "unauthorized pregnancies." While it was replaced in 2015, it affected millions of persons and its effects on reproductive decision making are not well known.
METHODS: We designed, validated, and performed a cross-sectional survey of reproductive age Chinese-born or first-generation women of Chinese descent to describe the policy's impact on reproductive decision-making. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify

OBJECTIVES: Hispanics have less favorable cardiovascular risk profiles relative to other groups, although little is known regarding variability in risk profiles according to country of origin. Our goal was to examine the association of cardiovascular risk factors with country of origin and acculturation in a cohort of middle-aged Hispanic women.
SETTING: Baseline data for participants at the New Jersey Site of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN).
PARTICIPANTS: 419 women, aged 42-52 years, comprising 142 non-Hispanic Whites and 277 Hispanic: Central American (n = 29), South A

Adolescence is a critical developmental period as youth explore their body image and work to establish an identity. The stress of identity and body image development can be exacerbated by acculturative stress faced by immigrant adolescents. Using a person-centered analysis, we investigated immigrant adolescents' (n = 57) profiles based on assimilation to the United States (US), weight, and body image dissatisfaction. Analyses included an exploratory two-step clustering technique using maximum likelihood estimation procedures to assign class membership. Follow-up analyses then examined latent c

INTRODUCTION: Hispanic adults in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and related mental health conditions, frequently intensified by immigration stress, acculturation challenges, and minority stress.
METHODS: This scoping review synthesized evidence on how immigration-related factors, acculturation, and minority stress influence diabetes distress and co-occurring mental health symptoms among Hispanic adults with T2DM. Searches of PubMed, CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE (OVID), and ScienceDirect (2001-2025) yielded 37 eligible studies comprisi

Cultural variables (e.g., cultural values, acculturation and attitudes towards seeking professional assistance) have been found to play important roles in the initiation and maintenance of numerous mental health and substance related problems. However, there is a significant lack of empirical studies investigating the relationships between these cultural variables and gambling behavior. Thus, this study assessed whether these cultural variables could predict gambling behavior among 233 Chinese residing in Australia. Several questionnaires were used in the study including the South Oaks Gamblin

Background/Objectives: College life shapes the dietary habits and food preferences of young adults by exposure to new foods and independence in dietary choices. This study described and compared self-reported food intakes and perceived dietary changes among International (34%), Multicultural (28%), and non-Hispanic White (38%) students at a Midwest United States university (n = 823; aged 18-34 years; 56% women). Importantly, the analysis extended to distinctions among multiple ethnic subcultures by nativity in the same setting. Methods: Students completed an online survey comprising a dietary

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors may vary by disaggregated race and ethnicity categories, and by acculturation-related factors. We evaluated the association between nativity and length of US residence, and prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia by select disaggregated race and ethnicity groups.
METHODS: We conducted a pooled cross-sectional study of 218 158 US adults from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (2013-2022). Nativity (US born, non-US born) and length of US residence (≥15 years or <15 years) were used as select proxies for accultur

BACKGROUND: Data collection on race and ethnicity is critical in the assessment of racial disparities related to health. Studies comparing clinical and administrative data show discrepancies in race documentation and attribution.
METHODS: Self-reported data from two studies were compared to demographics in the electronic health record (EHR) extracted from the Biomedical Translational Research Information System (BTRIS) repository. McNemar and Bhapkar analyses were conducted to quantify the agreement of ethnicity and race between self-reported and EHR data. Pearson's chi-square tests were used

Many ethnic minoritized adolescents attend minority-only schools with no ethnic majoritized classmates, but we know little about their acculturation and friendships in such settings. This study examined how early adolescents' heritage and mainstream cultural identities and behaviors associated with friendship ties in minority-only class networks. Early adolescents (N = 146, Mage = 11.24, 54.4% boys) in minority-only primary schools reported their heritage and mainstream cultural identities and behaviors and completed a sociometric measure of their friendship networks. Latinas/os have been underrepresented in research investigating the role of disgust propensity in phobias. The current study was the first to examine associations between disgust propensity and Blood-Injection-Injury (BII) phobia, when acculturation was controlled for, in Latina/o Americans (n = 376). A structural model was developed with a BII fear latent variable consisting of fears of injection, blood, and sharp objects (causing injuries). The disgust propensity latent variable was formed with three domains of core, animal reminder, and contamination disgust elicitors. In the model, disgust

Refugees have typically experienced stress and trauma before entering the US. Stressors and mental health disorders may contribute to obesity. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the body mass index (BMI) in Iraqi refugees settled in Michigan in relationship to pre- and post-migration stressors and mental health. Anthropometric and demographic data were collected from 290 Iraqi refugees immediately after they arrived in Michigan and one year after settlement. Significant increases were observed in BMI (+0.46 ± 0.09 kg/m(2), p < 0.0001) and the percentage of refugees suffering f

Pregnancy weight gain may be a risk factor for the development of obesity highlighting the importance of identifying psychosocial risk factors for pregnancy weight gain. The goal of this qualitative pilot study was to evaluate knowledge, attitudes and beliefs regarding weight gain during pregnancy among predominantly Puerto Rican women, a group with higher rates of obesity as compared to non-Hispanic white women. We conducted four focus groups stratified by level of acculturation and BMI. Women reported receiving advice about pregnancy weight gain predominantly from nutritionists and family me

As an immigrant population becomes more prominent in an established culture, research strategies for examining intragroup differences are needed to understand their health care risks and strengths. However, acculturation also must be taken into account. Our objective in this secondary analysis was to identify the most useful acculturation parameter for examining depressive symptoms in relation to strengths and resources among women of Mexican descent living in the United States during the vulnerable perinatal period and to examine other intragroup differences among the women by childbearing st

OBJECTIVES: This longitudinal study investigated how theorized cultural-, interpersonal/familial-, and individual-level experiences during initial years after immigrating to the United States may relate to changes in psychological distress over time among young adult Latina women in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States (U.S.).
METHODS: Using latent growth curve modeling, we examined trajectories of psychological distress reported by 530 Latina women (aged 18-23 years) during their initial years in the U.S. The sample's mean length of time in the United States since immigration was 11.52

The increased prevalence of anorexia nervosa reported in non-Western societies inevitably raises the issue of the influence of cultural factors in the genesis and the patterns of this disorder. Anorexia nervosa is not a straightforward Western culture-bound syndrome, although an influence of Western ideals of thinness does exist. The illness seems more related to rapid cultural shifts, either societal or individual, such as those occurring in the migratory process. Migrants and their children have to face the acculturation process and may experience a culture-clash. The pathology can also fulf

BACKGROUND: Increasing numbers of opioid-overdose deaths have been witnessed among Hispanics and other underserved populations in Massachusetts. Puerto Rican adults (PRs) have a disproportionately higher prevalence of chronic diseases than non-Hispanic White adults-conditions linked to increased prescription opioid use and misuse. Stress indicators, including low acculturation, low social support, and perceived discrimination, have been recognized as correlates of chronic diseases. However, little research has been undertaken on how these socio-cultural factors relate to persistent prescriptio

OBJECTIVES: As Latinos are a growing ethnic group in the United States, it is important to understand the socio-cultural factors that may be associated with cancer screening and prevention in this population. The socio-cultural factors that may affect preparedness to undergo genetic cancer risk assessment (GCRA) deserve particular attention. The pre-GCRA period can provide insight into variables that may influence how medically underserved Latinas, with limited health resources and access, understand hereditary cancer information and subsequently implement cancer risk management recommendation

Suicide risk factors among deaf and hard-of-hearing adults remain understudied. Guided by Joiner's Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (2005), this preliminary cross-sectional study examined associations among adult attachment styles, Deaf acculturation, perceived burdensomeness, disconnectedness, and fearlessness about death among deaf and hard-of-hearing adults. Sixty-eight deaf and hard-of-hearing adults (63.2% female; 75% White; ages 18-69) completed online measures assessing Deaf acculturation, attachment style, perceptions of burdensomeness and disconnectedness, and fearlessness about death.

We conducted a systematic analysis of 24 peer-reviewed literary works that examined Asian Americans' breast, cervical, and colon cancer screening, focusing on empirical findings from large-scale public health surveys (i.e., NHIS, CHIS, HINTS, BRFSS). We provide an overview of relevant research in terms of study characteristics, samples, predictor/covariate of cancer screenings, and key findings. Our analysis indicates that Asian Americans' cancer screening rates are lower than for non-Hispanic Whites for all cancer types in four large-scale public health surveys throughout 17 study years. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate whether Conners 3 ( Conners 3rd edition) ratings of ADHD symptoms are robust to distortion by cultural variation when applied to children with migration background living in Germany.
METHOD: From 2010 to 2011, Conners 3 data (self-rating, parent rating, and teacher rating) of 243 children with Turkish migration background, aged 6 to 16 years, were collected in various German schools. Allocation of items to latent factors was tested with confirmatory analyses. Reliability and validity of resulting factors was calculated and influence of acculturation, g
