An Adaptive Optimization Spiking Neural P System for Binary Problems.

Optimization Spiking Neural P System (OSNPS) is the first membrane computing model to directly derive an approximate solution of combinatorial problems with a specific reference to the 0/1 knapsack problem. OSNPS is composed of a family of parallel Spiking Neural P Systems (SNPS) that generate candidate solutions of the binary combinatorial problem and a Guider algorithm that adjusts the spiking probabilities of the neurons of the P systems. Although OSNPS is a pioneering structure in membrane computing optimization, its performance is competitive with that of modern and sophisticated metaheur

Application of spectral subtraction method on enhancement of electrolarynx speech.

Although electrolarynx (EL) serves as an important method of phonation for the laryngectomees, the resulting speech is of poor intelligibility due to the presence of a steady background noise caused by the instrument, even worse in the case of additive noise. This paper investigates the problem of EL speech enhancement by taking into account the frequency-domain masking properties of the human auditory system. One approach is incorporating an auditory masking threshold (AMT) for parametric adaptation in a subtractive-type enhancement process. The other is the supplementary AMT (SAMT) algorithm

Improved finite control set model predictive current control design for variable-speed wind-energy conversion system connected to the grid via an LCL filter.

This paper proposes an improved finite control set model predictive current control (FCS-MPCC) for variable-speed wind-energy conversion system (WECS) based on the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) connected to the grid via an LCL filter. For the generator side, the control is achieved through an adaptive FCS-MPCC based on an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and a reinforcement learning (RL) MPPT based on Q-learning algorithm for PMSG speed regulation and maximum power extraction (MPE). A UKF is used to perform a real-time parameter estimation for a PMSG prediction model, while a Q-le

Maternal immune activation during pregnancy is associated with more difficulties in socio-adaptive behaviors in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions characterised by deficits in social communication and interaction and repetitive behaviours. Maternal immune activation (MIA) during the mid-pregnancy is a known risk factor for ASD. Although reported in 15% of affected individuals, little is known about the specificity of their clinical profiles. Adaptive skills represent a holistic approach to a person's competencies and reflect specifically in ASD, their strengths and difficulties. In this study, we hypothesised that ASD individual with a history of MIA (MIA+) could be more se

Correction of the twisted nose deformity: a surgical algorithm using the external rhinoplasty approach.

Successful correction of the twisted nose is challenging due to the complex nature of the underlying anatomic deformity. Although the literature has in general supported endonasal rhinoplasty techniques for the twisted nose, we propose a surgical algorithm using the external rhinoplasty approach. The algorithm offer a stepwise, structured method that is adaptable to individual variations in anatomic deformity. The advantages and relative disadvantages of the external rhinoplasty approach are discussed, and a clinical experience of 30 patients is reviewed. Application of the external rhinoplast

Development and validation of a simple algorithm to estimate common gestational age categories using standard administrative birth record data in Ontario, Canada.

Gestational age is often incompletely recorded in administrative records, despite being critical to paediatric and maternal health research. Several algorithms exist to estimate gestational age using administrative databases; however, many have not been validated or use complicated methods that are not readily adaptable. We developed a simple algorithm to estimate common gestational age categories from routine administrative data. We leveraged a population-based registry of all hospital births occurring in Ontario, Canada over 2002-2016 including 1.8 million birth records. In this sample, this

Evaluating Diagnostic Algorithms for Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia using Two Combined Automated Rapid Immunoassays.

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is an autoimmune disorder caused by antibodies against platelet factor 4 (PF4) and heparin complexes. Rapid immunoassays (IAs) for detection of these antibodies mark a milestone in HIT diagnosis, despite a higher false-positive rate compared with functional platelet-activation assays. However, combining different rapid IAs may help to improve their diagnostic specificity. Here, we compared the individual performance of the latex immunoturbidimetric assay (LIA; HemosIL HIT-Ab [PF4-H]; sensitivity 91.7%, specificity 68.4%) and chemiluminescence immunoassay

Adaptive prior image constrained total generalized variation for low-dose dynamic cerebral perfusion CT reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic cerebral perfusion CT (DCPCT) can provide valuable insight into cerebral hemodynamics by visualizing changes in blood within the brain. However, the associated high radiation dose of the standard DCPCT scanning protocol has been a great concern for the patient and radiation physics. Minimizing the x-ray exposure to patients has been a major effort in the DCPCT examination. A simple and cost-effective approach to achieve low-dose DCPCT imaging is to lower the x-ray tube current in data acquisition. However, the image quality of low-dose DCPCT will be degraded because of the

The Modern Lobotomy: Closed-Loop Neuromodulation, Normalization by Algorithm, and the Disappearance of the Deviant Mind.

Closed-loop neuromodulation systems, particularly adaptive deep brain stimulation, mark a new phase in psychiatric intervention, extending from psychosurgery through pharmacological stabilization to automated algorithmic regulation. Drawing on Foucauldian genealogy and research on adaptive deep brain stimulation, this article develops the concept of "normalization by algorithm" to describe how algorithmic systems embed normative judgments about desirable cognition and affect within automated architectures operating below awareness. Their therapeutic potential for severe conditions like treatme

Assistive Trajectory Planning for Lower Limb Exoskeletons: Strategies From Laboratory-Optimized Gait to Environmentally-Adaptive Locomotion Through Multimodal Parameter Awareness.

Lower limb assistive exoskeletons (LLEs) show great potential to reduce metabolic cost, improve walking performance, and correct abnormal gait patterns. Among their core control architectures, assistive trajectory planning is key to determining system responsiveness and effectiveness under varying locomotion conditions. Many trajectory planning methods were proposed in either laboratory or unstructured real-world environments. To clarify the scope and challenges of existing research, this review categorizes trajectory planning strategies into two major types based on application scenarios: (1)

Performance of Closed-Loop DBS During Sleep in Patients with Essential Tremor.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has emerged as an effective therapy for people suffering from medication refractory essential tremor (ET). Significant tremor suppression for patients can be achieved by targeting and stimulating the thalamic ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM). In clinical practice, DBS is delivered continuously, resulting in stimulation when not needed, particularly during sleep when tremor is not experienced. Although the feasibility of fully embedded intention-based closed-loop DBS (CL-DBS) algorithms for ET has been demonstrated, there is a lack of research on their behavior du

Geomagnetic navigation metaheuristic algorithm for engineering optimization.

This paper proposes a novel meta-heuristic optimization algorithm - Geomagnetic Navigation Algorithm (GNA), which is inspired by the geomagnetic navigation mechanism of migratory birds. The algorithm constructs three core mechanisms: (1) Geomagnetic gradient dominance and multi-source cognitive modulation mechanism, which maps the direction of the magnetic inclination gradient to the global optimal solution and integrates information from three channels: elite memory, group social cognition, and magnetic pole reinforcement attraction; (2) Adaptive cognitive landmark chain correction mechanism,

Dynamic Feature Elimination-Based Visual-Inertial Navigation Algorithm.

To address the problem of degraded positioning accuracy in traditional visual-inertial navigation systems (VINS) due to interference from moving objects in dynamic scenarios, this paper proposes an improved algorithm based on the VINS-Fusion framework, which resolves this issue through a synergistic combination of multi-scale feature optimization and real-time dynamic feature elimination. First, at the feature extraction front-end, the SuperPoint encoder structure is reconstructed. By integrating dual-branch multi-scale feature fusion and 1 × 1 convolutional channel compression, it simultaneou

An algorithm for PCT-guided antimicrobial therapy: a consensus statement by Japanese experts.

In Japan, a national antimicrobial resistance (AMR) action plan was adopted in 2016, advocating a 20% reduction in antibiotic consumption by 2020. However, there is still room for improvement to accomplish this goal. Many randomized controlled trials have reported that procalcitonin (PCT)-guided antimicrobial therapy could help to reduce antibiotic consumption without negative health effects, specifically in acute respiratory infections. In September 2018, some experts in Europe and the USA proposed algorithms for PCT-guided antimicrobial therapy in mild to moderate infection cases outside the

Bleeding after use of the levonorgestrel regimen of emergency contraception: concordance between women's reports of their menstrual periods and an objective algorithm.

OBJECTIVE: To compare concordance between periods as recorded by women on daily diaries with those determined objectively by an algorithm used in an earlier study to assess bleeding patterns after taking the emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) regimen consisting of 1.5 mg levonorgestrel. METHODS: We asked 120 women who had been treated with the regimen to keep daily bleeding diaries for 9 weeks. We compared menstrual periods recorded on the diary cards and reported in follow-up interviews with those determined by an algorithm adapted from the World Health Organization (WHO). RESULTS: Altogeth

Benchmarking Image-Based Motion-Correction Methods for Ultrasound Localization Microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) achieves sub-diffraction resolution imaging in vivo through localizing and tracking microbubbles. However, the need to accumulate microbubble signals over time makes ULM highly sensitive to tissue motion, necessitating accurate motion correction. The accuracy of motion-correction techniques poses a limit to the attainable resolution, and there is currently no gold standard algorithm or approach. METHODS: This study benchmarked seven publicly available implementations of non-rigid image registration algorithms using two simulated datasets il

Adaptive Control for Gravitational Wave Detection Formation Considering Time-Varying Communication Delays.

A distributed six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) cooperative control for multiple spacecraft formation is investigated considering parametric uncertainties, external disturbances, and time-varying communication delays. Unit dual quaternions are used to describe the kinematics and dynamics models of the 6-DOF relative motion of the spacecraft. A distributed coordinated controller based on dual quaternions with time-varying communication delays is proposed. The unknown mass and inertia, as well as unknown disturbances, are then taken into account. An adaptive coordinated control law is developed by c
