Prolactin, aggression and hostility: a discussion of recent studies.

Several studies are summarized in which the relationship of high prolactin levels and self-rated anger-hostility was examined. The Symptom Questionnaire, a state measure which contains an anger-hostility scale, was included in all studies. Women with hyperprolactinemic amenorrhea were found to have higher hostility scores than amenorrheic women with normal prolactin levels. In another study, hyperprolactinemic women were found to have higher hostility scores than female family practice patients, random employees and there was a nonsignificant trend for higher hostility scores than in female no

Anosmia and aggression in male owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus).

Adult owl monkeys behaved aggressively when paired with unfamiliar members of the same sex. Males showed the greatest aggressive responses. When plugs containing bismuth iodoform paste were inserted into the nasal passages of male owl monkeys they fought less readily and showed less contact aggression. Although intermale aggression was not abolished anosmic males spent longer in proximity and showed an increase in olfactory inspections. Control experiments confirmed that the technique used to induce anosmia had blocked responsiveness to conspecific odours and that decreases in aggression were

Aggression, suicide, and serotonin: relationships to CSF amine metabolites.

In an earlier, separate study, the authors found that human aggression and suicide (a specific aggression-related behavior) were associated with lower levels of CSF 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), a serotonin metabolite. That study focused on subjects with personality disorders without affective illness. In the present study they examine the life history of aggression and history of suicidal behavior in 12 subjects with borderline personality disorders without major affective disorder. Histories of aggressive behaviors and of suicide attempts were significantly associated with each other,

Development of a measure of aggressive behavior expectancies in adults: The Aggression Expectancy Questionnaire.

According to sociocognitive theories, aggression is learned and elicited through a series of cognitive processes, such as expectancies, or the various consequences that an individual considers more or less likely following aggressive behavior. The current manuscript describes a measurement development project that ultimately yielded a 16-item measure of positive and negative aggression expectancies suitable for use in adult populations. Across two content generation surveys, two preliminary item refinement studies, and three full studies, we took an iterative approach and administered large it

A single social defeat reduces aggression in a highly aggressive strain of Drosophila.

Genes and prior experience both influence the behavior of animals, but the relative contribution of each to fighting behavior in Drosophila remains unclear. To address this issue, we bred hyperaggressive flies by selecting winners of fights over 34-37 generations. Males of this strain initiate fights sooner, retaliate more often, and regularly defeat opponents from the nonselected parent Canton-S strain. After a defeat, however, these highly aggressive flies lose their second fights against socially naïve counterparts. Defeated flies also lunge and retaliate less after experiencing a loss, sug

Retinal detachment despite aggressive management of aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity.

Posterior retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is unusual in its atypical features and its aggressive, rapidly progressive course. It is more difficult to recognize and to treat, with many of these eyes progressing to retinal detachment despite multiple treatments with laser or cryotherapy. The authors present a case of aggressive posterior ROP refractory to multiple laser treatment. This patient was successfully treated with intravitreal bevacizumab, but required repeat treatment 4 months later. The second injection with bevacizumab was followed by progression to retinal detachment requiring surg

A comparison of aggressive play and aggression in free-living baboons, Papio anubis.

A quantitative comparison is given of aggressive play and aggression in terms of the duration and type of movement patterns employed, and the relationships between individuals. The mean length of contact in play was greater than in aggression, whereas chases tended to be longer in adult male aggression than in play, Linear hierarchies describing the overall direction of interactions between individuals were divisible into two sorts, according to the frequency with which roles were reversed. The regions of the body bitten and the proportions in which six types of movement pattern were used were

Architects of Aggression: The Molecular Blueprint of Glioma Progression.

Despite decades of clinical validation, glioblastoma (GBM) treatment remains tethered to a dismal 15-to-16-month survival plateau, heavily thwarted by the ys blood-brain barrier (BBB) and profound cellular heterogeneity. While the 2021 World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System (WHO CNS5) fundamentally reoriented diagnosis around definitive molecular signatures, such as isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)-wildtype status, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) amplification, and +7/-10 chromosomal alterations, the ultimate obstacle to clinical efficacy is the

A Literature Review: Violence and Aggression in Neuroscience Nursing.

BACKGROUND: Violence and aggression is commonly encountered in nursing worldwide and is an increasing concern, although it is largely underreported by staff. Violence and aggression can take many forms, from verbal and physical abuse to sexual assault. This study aims to define agitation, violence, and aggression and to explore the prevalence of violence and aggression among neuroscience patients. This review also examines why violence and aggression occurs for neuroscience patients and to determine the effects on the patients, the environment, and the nursing staff. METHODS: A review of artic

Frustration-aggression hypothesis reconsidered: The role of significance quest.

One of the oldest scientific theories of human aggression is the frustration-aggression hypothesis, advanced in 1939. Although this theory has received considerable empirical support and is alive and well today, its underlying mechanisms have not been adequately explored. In this article, we examine major findings and concepts from extant psychological research on hostile aggression and offer an integrative conception: aggression is a primordial means for establishing one's sense of significance and mattering, thus addressing a fundamental social-psychological need. Our functional portrayal of

Aggression by omission: Redefining and measuring an understudied construct.

Researchers of aggression have classically focused on what has been previously called active aggression-the deliberate infliction of harm through the direct application of deleterious consequences. However, the counterpart to this, what was originally called passive aggression, has gone understudied, and its definition has mutated beyond its original conceptualization. The present two studies (N's 196 and 220, respectively) attempted to examine passive aggression as originally defined-the deliberate withholding of behavior to ensure that a target is harmed-and renaming it aggression by omissio

Alcohol, Aggression, and Violence: From Public Health to Neuroscience.

Alcohol has been associated with violent crimes and domestic violence across many nations. Various etiological factors were linked to chronic alcohol use and violence including psychiatric comorbidities of perpetrators such as personality disorders, mood disorders, and intermittent explosive disorders. Aggression is the precursor of violence and individuals prone to aggressive behaviors are more likely to commit impulsive violent crimes, especially under the influence of alcohol. Findings from brain studies indicate long-term alcohol consumption induced morphological changes in brain regions i

Arrest and Trait Aggression Correlates of Emergency Department Use.

This study examined the associations between arrest and incarceration, trait aggression, and emergency department (ED) use. Data were collected from 525 clients who visited the Center for Behavioral Research and Services in Long Beach, CA, using the following instruments: Risk Behavior Assessment, Risk Behavior Follow-Up Assessment, the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ), the Displaced AQ, and the parole and Legal Status section of the Addiction Severity Index. The bivariate analysis suggested that ED use was significantly associated with trait aggression and trait-displaced aggression among those

Insecure Attachment, Emotion Dysregulation, and Psychological Aggression in Couples.

According to adult attachment theory, levels of insecure attachment-both anxious and avoidant-are associated with abilities to regulate emotions in a relational context. This study is the first to test emotion dysregulation as a mediator of the association between levels of insecure attachment and psychological aggression using dyadic data. Cross-sectional self-report data were collected from 124 couples presenting for couple or family therapy at an outpatient clinic. Path analysis was used to analyze an actor-partner interdependence mediational model. Results did not support emotion dysregula

Clozapine in Reducing Aggression and Violence in Forensic Populations.

Popular media often portray people with a mental illness as being aggressive, violent, and incarcerated as a result of their behavior. Despite exaggeration in the media, risks for some aggressive behaviors are in fact higher in individuals with schizophrenia. This is often the case with influence of comorbid substance use disorders. It is essential that mental health professionals are aware of treatments that may help with attenuating and treating behaviors that contribute to violence, aggression and incarceration. This paper reviews violence and incarceration in individuals with schizophrenia

Prospective Evaluation of Self-Reported Aggression in Transgender Persons.

BACKGROUND: Although research on the relation between testosterone and aggression in humans is inconclusive, guidelines (including the World Professional Association for Transgender Health Standards of Care, edition 7) have warned for an increase in aggression in transgender men taking testosterone treatment. AIMS: To investigate the association between levels of testosterone and aggression in treatment-seeking transgender people and explore the role of mental health psychopathology (anxiety and depressive symptoms) and social support in aggression in this population. Violent aggression predicted by multiple pre-adult environmental hits.

Early exposure to negative environmental impact shapes individual behavior and potentially contributes to any mental disease. We reported previously that accumulated environmental risk markedly decreases age at schizophrenia onset. Follow-up of matched extreme group individuals (≤1 vs. ≥3 risks) unexpectedly revealed that high-risk subjects had >5 times greater probability of forensic hospitalization. In line with longstanding sociological theories, we hypothesized that risk accumulation before adulthood induces violent aggression and criminal conduct, independent of mental illness. We determi
