Revista alergia Mexico (Tecamachalco, Puebla, Mexico : 1993)2020spa
BACKGROUND: Allergy skin prick tests are important tools for the diagnosis of respiratory allergic diseases. Cockroach antigens have been identified as the cause of rhinitis, asthma, and other allergic diseases.
OBJECTIVE: To show that the cockroach antigen participates in the cause of allergic diseases.
METHODS: A retrolective and cross-sectional study was carried out, for which clinical records and history of atopy were reviewed; the results were obtained from blood biometry, nasal cytology, total IgE, and coproparasitoscopic serial tests. After prior informed consent, skin tests were appl

Allergies comprise a set of highly prevalent diseases. When allergic processes are not controlled, they can endanger patients' health and lives, and have an important economic and social impact. The aim of this paper is to present a practical consensus of the scientific evidence on the use of immunotherapy in allergic diseases. A collaborative review made by various institutes and universities in Colombia was carried out upon request of the Asociación Colombiana de Alergia, Asma e Imunología, led by general practitioners, allergists, immunologists, internists and paediatricians with experience

Vaccine-preventable disease levels in the United States are at or near record lows. Most parents today have never seen a case of diphtheria, measles, or other once commonly encountered infectious diseases now preventable by vaccine administration. As a result, some parents wonder why their children must receive shots for diseases that do not seem to exist. Myths and misinformation about vaccine safety abound and can confuse parents who are trying to make sound decisions about their children's health care. However, we cannot take continued high immunization coverage levels for granted. A succes

Bronchiectasis and chronic rhinosinusitis are chronic diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract characterised by both infective and inflammatory pathways. The two share many clinical, radiological, microbiological and pathophysiological aspects. Bronchiectasis and chronic rhinosinusitis may be characterised by different endotypes, with inflammation driven by either neutrophils and/or eosinophils. Although the two conditions may coexist, the prevalence of their association remains uncertain. To date, few studies have investigated the pathogenetic relationship between these disorders, wi

Allergists are often asked to evaluate children with atopic dermatitis (AD) for allergen triggers to disease. Testing, particularly for food triggers, often leads to elimination diets in an effort to improve AD control. However, the dual exposure hypothesis suggests that oral tolerance to food antigens is promoted through high-dose oral exposure, where sensitization occurs through lower dose cutaneous exposure. This suggests that strict elimination diets may pose some risks in children with AD. In addition, emerging evidence suggests an important role of skin inflammation in further allergic d

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Penicillin allergy is often misdiagnosed and is associated with adverse consequences, but testing is infrequently done in the hospital setting. This article reviews historical and contemporary innovations in inpatient penicillin allergy testing and its impact on antimicrobial stewardship.
RECENT FINDINGS: Adoption of the electronic medical record allows rapid identification of admitted patients carrying a penicillin allergy diagnosis. Collaboration with clinical pharmacists and the development of computerized clinical guidelines facilitates increased testing and appropriate

Betalactams are the most widely used antimicrobials for their safety and efficacy. These include the penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams. Penicillin allergy ranks first in relation to drug allergy. 10 to 20 % of the population is labeled as allergic to it, often wrongly. Cross reaction is reported in 2 to 5 % between penicillins and cephalosporin. There is no cross reaction between penicillins and aztreonam, but there is with ceftazidime. All the mechanisms of the Gell and Coombs classification are included in the pathophysiology of hypersensitivity reactions to penicilli

Food allergy is a modifiable disease, and at present its only form of management is dietary elimination of the offending food or foods. Success depends on the modification of four sources of food-related risk: underestimation of the food allergy problem; ignorance of cross-reacting allergens in other foods; unsupportive or uninformed measures from the family or school environments; and inadequate social recognition that food allergy is a growing public health problem. Ultimately, the empowerment of children with allergies through education, allergist and dietician guidance, and patient associa

The ocular manifestations of allergy have traditionally been classified into four categories--namely, hay fever conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, atopic keratoconjunctivitis, and contact lens-associated giant papillary conjunctivitis. Typically, hay fever conjunctivitis is characterized by mild conjunctival inflammation, whereas the other disorders may have severe inflammation and clinical manifestations. Potentially blinding corneal complications may result from vernal keratoconjunctivitis and atopic keratoconjunctivitis. Although hay fever conjunctivitis is clearly an immediate hy

Angioedema of the face is a common entity seen by the allergist, but other less common conditions should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of facial swelling. Elephantiasis nostras is a rare condition that can result in persistent swelling of the lips secondary to recurrent attacks of lymphangitis caused by bacterial infection. Cheilitis granulomatosa is a disorder that may also present with lip swelling. We present a patient with persistent swelling of his lips who was referred to our service to consider an allergic cause. The clinical findings of persistence of the swelling wi

Bronchial asthma, a chronic condition marked by persistent inflammation and bronchial obstruction, affects over 334 million people globally. Although extensive research has been conducted on its biological and environmental causes, the impact of psychiatric disorders such as stress and anxiety on asthma is less understood, despite their significant association with the condition. Stress can exacerbate asthma by weakening the body's response to medications and is associated with a higher prevalence of anxiety and depressive disorders among asthmatics. A bidirectional relationship exists between

Hyper-immunoglobulin E (IgE) syndrome (HIES) is an immunodeficiency syndrome characterized by atopic dermatitis, recurrent skin abscesses, and sinopulmonary infections with elevated serum IgE. In addition, patients also present with other skeletal and non-immune symptoms. We present a six-year-old boy with severe atopic dermatitis, multiple food allergies, mild asthma, and recurrent sinopulmonary infections, who presented to the ER with left ankle pain, fever, and inability to bear weight. Physical examination showed generalized eczematous lesions, significant left ankle ecchymosis, swelling,

Exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) denotes a range of disorders where anaphylaxis occurs in relation to physical exercise. Typical symptoms include flushing, pruritus, urticaria, angioedema, respiratory symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, hypotension, and collapse during or after exercise. The far best described entity within EIA is food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA), where symptoms only occur in combination with food intake. Frequency and predictability of symptoms vary, and some patients experience symptoms only if exercise is accompanied by other co-factors Areas covered:

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Telemedicine uses technology to connect patients with providers at a distance. While the clinical aspects of this have been reviewed extensively, the technical aspects are not as well understood by allergists when they consider adding telemedicine to their practice. This review focuses on the technical aspects of setting up a telemedicine program.
RECENT FINDINGS: With the advent of new technologies including high-speed Internet, video conferencing solutions, and digital examination equipment, facilitated virtual visits as replacements for in-person visits are now possible.

Children who begin wheezing during early childhood are frequently seen by health care providers in primary care, in hospitals, and in emergency departments, and by allergists and pulmonologists. When a young child, such as the 2 year-old patient presented here, is evaluated for wheezing, a frequent challenge for clinicians is to determine whether the symptoms represent transient, viral-induced wheezing or whether sufficient risk factors are present to suspect that the child may experience recurrent wheezing and develop asthma. Most factors that influence prognosis are not mutually exclusive, a

BACKGROUND: Enzyme replacement therapy significantly reduces morbidity and mortality in patients with Pompe disease. Development of hypersensitivity reactions to enzyme replacement therapy is common and can adversely affect disease outcomes when treatment is halted or delayed.
OBJECTIVE: Our institution reports a case of successful alglucosidase alfa enzyme replacement therapy desensitisation in a 9-year-old girl with infantile onset Pompe disease.
METHODS: A desensitisation protocol was tailored to our patient with the help of a multidisciplinary team including the allergist, geneticist, nu

Drug allergy has been a research topic within the allergy field for decades. However, many drug reactions presumed to be of allergic nature are not and originate from different mechanisms. Drug-induced reactions can affect numerous organ systems, present with various symptoms, and have more than 1 mechanism of action. In this rostrum article, we want to give an overview of the different allergic and nonallergic reactions that can be expected with the (illicit) use of cannabis, cocaine, opioids, and alcohol. In addition, this article focuses on the different methods available to diagnose allerg

Urticaria with angioedema is a common clinical presentation that often poses a challenge for allergists. The differential diagnosis for urticaria is broad, making the evaluation and pinpointing the underlying cause difficult and frustrating for both families and physicians. Certain causes of urticaria such as infections or medications are more common and easier to identify whereas less frequently seen conditions are often overlooked because of their rarity. One such condition is mastocytosis. Mastocytosis is a rare disease that very seldom presents with urticaria but may be associated with sig
