Wolbachia (Alphaproteobacteria, Rickettsiales) is an intraovarially transmitted symbiont of insects able to exert striking phenotypes, including reproductive manipulations and pathogen blocking. These phenotypes make Wolbachia a promising tool to combat mosquito-borne diseases. Although Wolbachia is present in the majority of terrestrial arthropods, including many disease vectors, it was considered absent from Anopheles gambiae mosquitos, the main vectors of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2014, Wolbachia sequences were detected in A. gambiae samples collected in Burkina Faso. Subsequently,

The microbiological quality of the five leading brands of Norwegian bottled still waters was investigated. All brands were free for the enteric indicator organisms and named pathogens whose absence is demanded in current quality directives. The relatively nutrient-poor agar R₂A revealed large heterogeneous bacterial populations which grew slowly, or not at all, on clinical media specified for use in substrate-utilization approaches to identification. The main approach used for identification was cultivation of microbes on R₂A, followed by amplification and partial sequencing of 16S rDNA genes.

Rochalimaea henselae and R. quintana belong to the order Rickettsiales and are thought to be responsible for trench fever, bacillary angiomatosis, and cat scratch disease. We recently examined four patients with intraocular inflammation of unknown origin. Each patient had either unilateral or bilateral moderate loss of visual acuity ranging from 20/25 to counting fingers. Bilateral intraocular inflammation manifested by anterior and posterior segment cells, retinal lesions, macular exudate, and optic nerve head swelling was present to varying degrees. The R. henselae to R. quintana antibody ti

Stable carbon isotope fractionation during dichloromethane (DCM) degradation by methylotrophic bacteria was investigated under aerobic and nitrate-reducing conditions. The strains studied comprise several Hyphomicrobium strains, Methylobacterium, Methylopila, Methylophilus and Methylorhabdus spp. that are considered to degrade DCM by a glutathione (GSH)-dependent dehalogenase enzyme system in the initial step. The stable carbon isotope fractionation factors (alphaC) of the strains varied under aerobic conditions between 1.043 and 1.071 and under nitrate-reducing conditions between 1.048 and 1.

Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) are promising molecular biomarkers widely applied in paleoenvironmental reconstructions, including temperature and pH. However, knowledge of the microorganisms responsible for brGDGT production in marine environments remains limited, which constrains the further development and application of brGDGT-based proxies for reconstructing past marine conditions. In this study, both 'living' intact polar lipid-derived brGDGTs (IPL-brGDGTs) and 'fossil' core brGDGTs (CL-brGDGTs), together with bacterial community compositions, were analysed in mu

Livestock waste composts with minimum inorganic fertilizer as a soil amendment in low-input intensive farming are a feasible agricultural practice to improve soil fertility and productivity and to mitigate soil degradation. The key benefits of the practice rely on the activities of soil microorganisms. However, the role of different livestock composts [composted cattle manure (CCM) vs. composted swine manure (CSM)] on soil microbes, their activities and the overall impact on soil fertility and productivity in a flooded paddy remains elusive. This study compares the effectiveness of CCM and CSM

Predicted highly expressed (PHX) genes in five currently available high G+C complete alpha-proteobacterial genomes are analyzed. These include: the nitrogen-fixing plant symbionts Sinorhizobium meliloti (SINME) and Mesorhizobium loti (MESLO), the nonpathogenic aquatic bacterium Caulobacter crescentus (CAUCR), the plant pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens (AGRTU), and the mammalian pathogen Brucella melitensis (BRUME). Three of these genomes, SINME, AGRTU, and BRUME, contain multiple chromosomes or megaplasmids (>1 Mb length). PHX genes in these genomes are concentrated mainly in the major (larg

BACKGROUND: Using a combination of pyrosequencing and conventional Sanger sequencing, the complete genome sequence of the recently described novel Brucella species, Brucella microti, was determined. B. microti is a member of the genus Brucella within the Alphaproteobacteria, which consists of medically important highly pathogenic facultative intracellular bacteria. In contrast to all other Brucella species, B. microti is a fast growing and biochemically very active microorganism with a phenotype more similar to that of Ochrobactrum, a facultative human pathogen. The atypical phenotype of B. mi

UNLABELLED: Methylthio-alkane reductase (MAR) is a relative of nitrogenase that cleaves methylthio-alkanes for methanethiol liberation and subsequent methionine biogenesis. For example, dimethylsulfide, the most abundant volatile organic sulfur compound, is cleaved to methanethiol and methane. To date, the only verified MAR enzymes are from Alphaproteobacteria like Rhodospirillum rubrum, despite the long-time observation of gene homologs with potential MAR function present across diverse taxa. Synthesis of MAR genes from uncultivated organisms and expression in R. rubrum reveals that functiona

PURPOSE: Keratoconus (KC) is characterized by irregular astigmatism along with corneal stromal weakness and is associated with altered immune status. Tissue resident microbiomes are known to influence the immune status in other organs, but such a nexus has not been described in ocular conditions. Therefore, we examined the ocular surface microbiome of patients with KC and correlated it to the immune cell and tear molecular factor profiles.
METHODS: Sixty-two patients with KC and 21 healthy controls underwent corneal topography analysis and eye examination followed by a collection of Schirmer'

BACKGROUND: Severe alcoholic hepatitis (SAH) has high 90-day mortality. Prednisolone therapy has shown modest survival benefits over placebo at 28 but not 90 days. Fecal microbial transplantation (FMT) has shown promise in these patients. We compared the efficacy and safety of the two therapies in SAH patients.
METHODS: Steroid eligible SAH patients were randomized in an open-label study to prednisolone (n = 60) 40 mg/day for 28 days (assessed at day-7 for continuation) or healthy donor FMT (n = 60) through naso-duodenal tube, daily for seven days. Primary outcome of study was day-90 survival

BACKGROUND: The Chernobyl accident represents a long-term experiment on the effects of exposure to ionizing radiation at the ecosystem level. Though studies of these effects on plants and animals are abundant, the study of how Chernobyl radiation levels affect prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities is practically non-existent, except for a few reports on human pathogens or soil microorganisms. Environments enduring extreme desiccation and UV radiation, such as sunlight exposed biofilms could in principle select for organisms highly resistant to ionizing radiation as well.

AIMS: This study aimed at isolating thermophilic bacteria that utilize cheap carbon substrates for the economically feasible production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), poly(3HB), at elevated temperatures.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Thermophilic bacteria were enriched from an aerobic organic waste treatment plant in Germany, and from hot springs in Egypt. Using the viable colony staining method for hydrophobic cellular inclusions with Nile red in mineral salts medium (MSM) containing different carbon sources, six Gram-negative bacteria were isolated. Under the cultivation conditions used in this study,

BACKGROUND: Species of the genus Bartonella are facultative intracellular alphaproteobacteria with zoonotic potential. Bartonella infections in humans range from mild with unspecific symptoms to life threatening, and can be transmitted via arthropod vectors or through direct contact with infected hosts, although the latter mode of transmission is rare. Among the small mammals that harbour Bartonella spp., rodents are the most speciose group and harbour the highest diversity of these parasites. Human-rodent interactions are not unlikely as many rodent species live in proximity to humans. Howeve

Very recently, Bartonella organisms have been isolated from large ruminants (deer, elk, and dairy and beef cattle) located in the United States and in France. In this study, we report the serologic, microbiologic, and molecular findings related to the isolation of a Bartonella species in North Carolina beef cattle and the detection of nanobacterial antigen using a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Between August 1998 and September 1999, blood was collected from 38 cattle ranging in age from 1 month to 6.5 years. After a 1-month incubation period, a Bartonella sp. was is

An aerobic bacterial strain M11 capable of degrading dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was isolated and identified as Camelimonas sp. This strain could not grow on dialkyl phthalates, including dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl and dipentyl phthalate, but suspensions of cells could transform these compounds to phthalate via corresponding monoalkyl phthalates. The degradation kinetics of DBP was best fitted by first-order kinetic equation. During growth in Brucella Selective Medium, M11 produced the high amounts of non-DBP-induced intracellular hydrolase in the stationary phase. The DBP hydrolase gene

Infectious and environmental agents have been proposed as immunologic triggers for primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). Recently, a ubiquitous organism that metabolizes organic compounds and estrogens, Novosphingobium aromaticivorans, has been defined. Importantly, 2 bacterial proteins have homology with the E2 component of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC-E2). Sera from 97 patients with PBC, 46 first-degree relatives, 10 spouses, and 195 controls were studied for reactivity against N. aromaticivorans and Escherichia coli. The reactivity was defined by absorption, affinity purification, and
