Molecular and morphological identification of a reptile-associated tick, Amblyomma geoemydae (Acari: Ixodidae), infesting wild yellow-margined box turtles (Cuora flavomarginata) in northern Taiwan.

The genetic identity and morphological features of a reptile-associated tick, Amblyomma geoemydae, were examined for the first time in Taiwan. The key morphological characters of male and female Am. geoemydae were photographed using a stereo microscope. The genetic identity was analyzed by comparing the 16S mitochondrial DNA gene sequences obtained from 11 Taiwan Am. geoemydae ticks with other Amblyomma species and three Ixodes species as outgroups. All the Taiwan specimens were genetically affiliated to a monophyletic group of Am. geoemydae and could be discriminated from other Amblyomma spec

Field collection and genetic classification of tick-borne Rickettsiae and Rickettsiae-like pathogens from South Texas: Coxiella burnetii isolated from field-collected Amblyomma cajennense.

We are reporting the first known isolation of the Q-fever agent Coxiella burnetii from field-collected cayenne ticks Amblyomma cajennense in North America. Q-fever affects a number of domestic ungulates where it can lead to abortion in sheep and goats. There is far less known about the disease's effects on wild species, primarily because of the tendency of the disease to self resolve and to provide long-term immunity to subsequent infections. The first recovery of C. burnetii in North America was from the tick species Dermacentor andersoni. Since the original isolation C. burnetii has been rec

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) of three Timor-Leste reptiles: first country record of Amblyomma helvolum, with new interactions and an updated list of host species.

We report on the presence of the ixodid tick Amblyomma helvolum on three species of reptiles from Timor-Leste. Among a total of 21 host specimens (lizards: 18 four-fingered skinks, Carlia sp. 'Meleotegi' and two forest skinks, Sphenomorphus sp. 'Meleotegi'; snake: one Coelognathus subradiatus) four were parasitized by ticks. Whereas nymphs were associated with the lizards, an adult male was retrieved from the snake. This report is the first of A. helvolum for Timor-Leste, the first for the skink genera Carlia and Sphenomorphus, and the first for C. subradiatus. We present a comprehensive table

Amblyostatin-1, the first salivary cystatin with host immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties from the Neotropical tick Amblyomma sculptum, vector of Brazilian spotted fever.

INTRODUCTION: The Neotropical tick Amblyomma sculptum is the primary vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Brazilian spotted fever, a disease associated with high fatality rates. Tick saliva, a complex mixture of bioactive molecules essential for successful blood feeding, facilitates pathogen transmission and modulates host immune responses. A comprehensive evaluation of the salivary gland transcriptome database reveals that protease inhibitors are abundantly expressed molecules in tick saliva during feeding. Thus, this study aims to describe and characterize the most express

Comparative evaluation of Amblyomma americanum and Dermacentor variabilis microbial agents and human disease case data in seven Piedmont counties of North Carolina, 2020-2023.

Tick-borne pathogens pose an ongoing threat to human health in the southeastern United States, where tick and host abundances are high. In North Carolina, several medically important tick species are present, but in the Piedmont region, Amblyomma americanum is particularly abundant and associated with multiple human pathogens, including Rickettsia amblyommatis, a hypothesized human pathogen. In this study, we build on recent tick surveillance efforts across several North Carolina counties by screening A. americanum for Ehrlichia ewingii, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, and R. amblyommatis while also an

Ability of two natural products, nootkatone and carvacrol, to suppress Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum (Acari: Ixodidae) in a Lyme disease endemic area of New Jersey.

We evaluated the ability of the natural, plant-derived acaricides nootkatone and carvacrol to suppress Ixodes scapularis Say and Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae). Aqueous formulations of 1 and 5% nootkatone applied by backpack sprayer to the forest litter layer completely suppressed I. scapularis nymphs through 2 d. Thereafter, the level of reduction gradually declined to < or =50% at 28 d postapplication. Against A. americanum nymphs, 1% nootkatone was less effective, but at a 5% concentration, the level of control was similar or greater to that observed with I. scapularis through

Sustained control of Gibson Island, Maryland, populations of Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum (Acari: Ixodidae) by community-administered 4-Poster deer self-treatment bait stations.

In 1998, twenty-five 4-Poster deer treatment bait stations were deployed on Gibson Island (GI), Maryland, as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Northeast Area-Wide Tick Control Project. Treatments concluded in June 2002, having achieved 80% and 99.5% control of blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, and lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum, respectively. No area-wide tick control was attempted again on the island until 2003, when 15 Dandux-manufactured 4-Posters were purchased by the GI Corporation and operated until the present. Annual flagging at sites on the island and a simi

Relative abundance and prevalence of selected Borrelia infections in Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum (Acari: Ixodidae) from publicly owned lands in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

To evaluate their potential importance in the transmission of ixodid tick-borne borrelioses in Monmouth County, NJ, we collected host-seeking Ixodes scapularis Say and Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) adults and nymphs to determine relative encounter frequencies and the infection prevalence of selected Borrelia spp. in their respective tick vectors. We also reviewed records of all ticks submitted for identification by the public in Monmouth County during 2001-2005. Relative abundance of the two species varied markedly among sites. Adult encounter frequencies for the two species were

Mechanistic movement models to predict geographic range expansions of ticks and tick-borne pathogens: Case studies with Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma americanum in eastern North America.

The geographic range of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is expanding northward from the United States into southern Canada, and studies suggest that the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, will follow suit. These tick species are vectors for many zoonotic pathogens, and their northward range expansion presents a serious threat to public health. Climate change (particularly increasing temperature) has been identified as an important driver permitting northward range expansion of blacklegged ticks, but the impacts of host movement, which is essential to tick dispersal into new climati

Two for the price of one: Co-infection with Rickettsia bellii and spotted fever group Rickettsia in Amblyomma (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks recovered from wild birds in Brazil.

The bacterium Rickettsia bellii has been detected in 25 species of ticks in the American continents, but its pathogenic potential is considered as undetermined. A possible role for this species in the phenomenon of transovarial exclusion of pathogenic members of the spotted fever group (SFG) of Rickettsia has been suggested and co-infections with pathogenic species have been reported infrequently in both North and South America. Traditional methods for the molecular detection of rickettsial agents in ticks focus largely on the identification of sequences found in SFG Rickettsia, an approach th

Tick-associated microorganisms (Borrelia, Rickettsia, Hepatozoon, and Hemolivia) in Amblyomma varanense ticks parasitizing Asian water monitors (Varanus salvator): Insights from a hotspot in Ratchaburi Province, Western Thailand.

Asian water monitors (Varanus salvator) serve as significant hosts for ticks in Southeast Asia, yet the diversity of microorganisms potentially vectored or endosymbiotic within their ticks in Western Thailand remains underexplored. This study investigated the occurrence and genetic diversity of tick-associated microorganisms in ticks parasitizing this varanid species at the Khaozon Wildlife Breeding Center (KWBC), Ratchaburi Province. Morphological and molecular analyses confirmed that all 30 adult ticks collected were Amblyomma varanense (Arachnida: Ixodidae). PCR-based analysis coupled with

Recently Evolved Francisella-Like Endosymbiont Outcompetes an Ancient and Evolutionarily Associated Coxiella-Like Endosymbiont in the Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum) Linked to the Alpha-Gal Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are hematophagous arthropods that transmit various bacterial, viral, and protozoan pathogens of public health significance. The lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is an aggressive human-biting tick that transmits bacterial and viral pathogens, and its bites are suspected of eliciting the alpha-gal syndrome, a newly emerged delayed hypersensitivity following consumption of red meat in the United States. While ongoing studies have attempted to investigate the contribution of different tick-inherent factors to the induction of alpha-gal syndrome, an otherwise understudied asp
