[Rethinking Sciatica In View of a Bilateral Anatomical Variation of the Sciatic Nerve, with Low Origin and High Division: Historical, Anatomical and Clinical Approach].

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present study is to report an original, unusual, case of bilateral anatomical variation of the sciatic nerve, with low origin and high division. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Anatomical dissection was performed on a 66 year-old female cadaver. The corpse was embalmed and conserved through our original embalming techniques. RESULTS: The particular anatomical variation was first detected during routine dissection classes for undergraduate students. The study was completed with contralateral dissection to unveil bilateral variation. In both hind limbs, the sciatic nerve had

The English national low rectal cancer development programme: key messages and future perspectives.

AIM: Adenocarcinoma of the lower rectum is clinically challenging because of the need to choose between a wide excision to achieve oncological clearance, on the one hand, and sphincter conservation to maintain anal function, on the other. The English National Low Rectal Cancer Development Programme (LOREC) was developed under the auspices of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and the English National Cancer Action Team to improve the outcome of low rectal cancer in England. METHOD: LOREC was initiated focusing on preoperative imaging, selective neoadjuvant therapy,

Anastomosis at the level of the elbow joint connecting the deep, or normal, brachial artery with major arterial variations of the upper limb.

Major variations of the principal arteries of the upper limb have long received the attention of anatomists. These variations can be summarised as the presence of 2 main arteries traversing the cubital fossa, a deep (or normal) brachial artery in coexistence with a superficial brachial, radial or ulnar artery. Anastomosis between these arterial trunks at elbow level has been reported in 1–6% of cases as an incidental finding in studies on the major arterial variations of the upper limb (Quain, 1844; Müller, 1903; Poynter, 1922; Adachi, 1928; McCormack et al. 1953; Wankoff, 1962; Rodríguez-Baez

The dark side of anatomical illustration: should we still be utilising artistic depictions of cadavers from unethical or unknown sources? A UK perspective.

The history of anatomical illustration is deeply entangled with unethical and, at times, illegal practices shaped by the politics of death and bodily autonomy. While anatomical images remain central to education, research, and patient communication, the individuals whose bodies were rendered into these illustrations have rarely been acknowledged. Historically, anatomists relied on bodies from executions, prisons, workhouses, and grave robbing. Legislation such as the Murder Act of 1752 and the Anatomy Act of 1832 disproportionately targeted marginalised populations, many of whom did not consen

Inferior polar renal artery arising just above the aortic bifurcation: case report and brief literature review.

BACKGROUND: Multiple renal arteries (MRAs) are common anatomical variants; however, inferior polar arteries (IPAs) remain rare and clinically significant. Their presence may influence surgical procedures, transplantation outcomes, and diagnostic imaging. Therefore, detailed anatomical descriptions of such variants remain important. CASE REPORT: A rare case of right inferior polar artery (RIPA) was identified during routine cadaveric dissection of an 86-year-old female cadaver. Morphometric measurements of the vessel were performed using an electronic caliper with an accuracy of ± 0.02 mm. RE

Mandibular Gonial Angle Measurement with Anatomical Precision in 3D Volume Rendered CT Images.

PURPOSE: This letter presents a novel, simple, and reproducible method for measuring the gonial angle using open-source imaging software, 3D Slicer. The main research question was whether a standardized three-dimensional (3D) approach could provide a practical and accurate alternative to traditional two-dimensional cephalometric techniques. METHODS: High resolution head computed tomography (CT) scans were imported into 3D Slicer (version 5.6.2). The mandible was reconstructed in 3D using volume rendering module. Two three-point planes were defined: one tangential to the mandibular body's lowe

Bilateral duplicated hypoplastic superior cerebellar arteries one of which originates from a full-type fetal posterior cerebral artery.

PURPOSE: The association of bilateral duplication of the superior cerebellar artery with an origin from the posterior cerebral artery is rare but of great interest to anatomists, radiologists, and surgeons. This article reports bilateral duplicated hypoplastic superior cerebellar arteries, one of which arises from a full-type fetal cerebral artery. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A 59-year-old woman admitted to the neurosurgery department for a subarachnoid hemorrhage underwent a brain CTA with 3D reconstruction using «3D slicer 4.11» software. Brain CTA and the 3D model were used to analyze the configu

Gangliformis Intumescentia and Beyond: Antonio Scarpa and His Core Contribution to Neuroanatomy, Neurosurgery, and Otoneurosurgery.

Nearly 250 years ago, Antonio Scarpa became a professor of anatomy and surgery only 2 years after he graduated from the University of Padua. The young lecturer soon became one of the most renowned anatomists in Italy and a director of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Pavia. He worked in the fields of general surgery and ophthalmology. Several anatomic structures have been named after him, mainly Scarpa fascia and Scarpa triangle. His interest in neuroanatomy was ardent, despite being occasionally neglected. Scarpa's contributions to the fields of neurosciences have been significant

Eponymous "valves" of the nasolacrimal drainage apparatus. I. A historical review.

The nasolacrimal drainage apparatus (NDA) is of interest to anatomists, radiologists, and ophthalmologists alike, owing to its intricate luminal contour, complex surrounding structural morphology, and its clinical relevance. Here, we review the history of anatomical descriptions of so-called luminal "valves" of the NDA, including the numerous historical figures whose eponyms adorn the NDA. By 1908, multiple false "valves" that are likely no more than mounds of mucosa along the NDA had been recorded. In the modern era, these have all been largely considered speculative in nature and function as

Value of vaginal cervical position in estimating uterine anatomy.

The anatomy of the uterus is defined with the angles of the vagina, cervix and uterine corpus. Hereunder there are angles of version and flexion. The cervical position observed during the vaginal speculum examination, may give information about the uterine anatomy. In this study, we investigated the place of the cervical position in the estimation of the uterine anatomy observed during the cervical examination. We enrolled 240 patients in our study, who applied to our routine gynecology outpatient clinic with various complaints. We divided these patients into two groups according to the cervic

Two Rare Variants of Left Vertebral Artery.

Though the variations of vertebral artery are clinically asymptomatic yet abnormalities are of diagnostic importance either prior to vascular surgery in the neck region or in patients of intravascular diseases such as arteriovenous malformations or cerebral aneurysms. Therefore, the aim of the study is to bring out 2 variations in the configuration of vertebral artery and their clinical implication. During dissection of thorax of 2 female cadavers, 2 different variants of configurations of left vertebral arteries were observed. In 1 patient, the left vertebral artery arose aberrantly from arch

The murine lens: A model to investigate in vivo epithelial-mesenchymal transition.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) produces myofibroblasts that contribute to the formation of fibrotic tissue with an impairment of tissue homeostasis and functionality. The crystalline lens of the eye is a unique transparent and isolated tissue. The lens vesicle becomes isolated from the surface ectoderm, its cells are all contained as they line the inner surface of the lens capsule. Clinically the formation of fibrotic tissue by the lens epithelial cells causes a type of cataract or opacification and contraction of the lens capsule postcataract surgery. Production of EMT in the intact

Stereological Evaluation of the Optic Nerve Volume in Alzheimer Disease.

Optic nerve damage occurs in Alzheimer disease (AD) related to the loss of the retinal ganglion cells that contribute fibers to the optic nerve and reduction of the density of axons of the optic nerve. In this study the authors evaluated optic nerve volume changes and the relation between the cerebrum and optic nerve volumes in AD patients. The study evaluated the volumetric measurements of optic nerve by applying the stereological method on magnetic resonance images (MRI). It included age-matched study and control groups, which were composed of 20 patients with probable AD and 20 healthy subj

Notes on the history of the Dr. Senckenbergische Anatomie in Frankfurt/Main. Part II. The Dr. Senckenbergische Anatomie during the Third Reich and its body supply.

In order to be able to understand how body supply was maintained at the Dr. Senckenbergische Anatomie from 1933 to 1945 - with special emphasis on victims of the National Socialist regime - we have collected information from various and often fragmentary sources. The documents reveal that during this period at least 474 bodies were brought to the anatomical institute. Among them were the bodies of at least 71 prisoners, 51 of whom had been executed, and the bodies of 8 inmates of (labor-) camps. 356 unclaimed bodies were received, some of them may stem from victims of "euthanasia" programs. Overview of the History of the Cranial Nerves: From Galen to the 21st Century.

Throughout history the description and classification of the cranial nerves has been linked to the development and characteristics of anatomy and the role that it played as a tool in providing rationality to medicine, together with social, cultural, religious, and philosophical factors. Anatomists were interested in the cranial nerves, but they disagreed on their number and their paths. We can divide the history of the cranial nerves into three different periods: the first, early or macroscopic period; the second or microscopic period; and the third period or ontogenesis and genoarchitecture.

The prevalence of the extensor digiti minimi tendon of the hand and its variants in humans: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The extensor digiti minimi (EDM) is frequently used in the case of an abduction deformity of the little finger. It is also considered as a main resource for tendon transfer. However, it shows many variations in the human hand, which include splitting into two or more slips and sending a slip to the fourth finger, named the extensor digiti minimi et quarti (EDMQ). The aim of this systematic review is to perform an evidence synthesis on the prevalence of the EDM and its variants. Twenty-six cadaveric studies met the inclusion criteria with a total of 2247 hands. Meta-analysis results yielded an

Magnetic resonance elastography: a review.

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a rapidly developing technology for quantitatively assessing the mechanical properties of tissue. The technology can be considered to be an imaging-based counterpart to palpation, commonly used by physicians to diagnose and characterize diseases. The success of palpation as a diagnostic method is based on the fact that the mechanical properties of tissues are often dramatically affected by the presence of disease processes, such as cancer, inflammation, and fibrosis. MRE obtains information about the stiffness of tissue by assessing the propagation of m

Moritz Nagel (1808-1871): A faceless name in the history of the adrenal glands.

In 1836, an article was published in which the terms Rindensubstanz (cortical substance) and Marksubstanz (medullary substance) were introduced for the first time with reference to the adrenal glands. The author was indicated as 'Dr Nagel', without any further specification. Modern scientific literature often identifies the author's name as 'N. Nagel', without citing any primary source. Here, Nagel is positively identified as Moritz Nagel (1808-1871), a student of the German physiologist and anatomist Johannes Peter Müller (1801-1858), who graduated in Medicine at the University of Berlin in 1

Jean Riolan the Younger (1580 - 1657) and the Trepanation of the Mastoid Process: More Than a Suggestion?

INTRODUCTION: The Parisian anatomist Jean Riolan the Younger (1580 - 1657) is usually associated with the first proposal to surgically open the mastoid for certain ear pathologies with varying degrees of accuracy. The purpose of this historical research is to go back to the original texts and try to understand what probably prompted Riolan the Younger to suggest the surgical opening of the mastoid, thus paying him the correct tribute and restoring him to his rightful place in the history of mastoid surgery. METHODOLOGY: Review of the published secondary literature on the history of the surgic
