Diagnosis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal bleeding: iron deficiency anemia working group consensus report.

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are important signs of gastrointestinal (GI) hemorrhage. Therefore, the evaluation of the GI tract should be a part of the diagnostic protocol in patients with IDA. GI hemorrhage is not a disease but a symptom, which might have different underlying causes. ID and IDA have significant negative impacts on the life quality and work ability, and they may lead to frequent hospitalization, delay of discharge, and increased healthcare costs. Therefore, an optimal management of the disease causing GI hemorrhage should include iron replacement thera

Comparison of Two Oral Iron Formulations for Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The use of oral iron in iron deficiency (ID) and ID anemia (IDA) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is controversial. Its lower cost and ease of administration must be weighed against side effects and efficacy. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of two oral iron formulations (Sucrosomial® iron [SI] and ferric hydroxide-polymaltose complex [FHPC] for correcting ID and IDA in IBD. As a secondary objective, we aimed to assess the impact of oral iron on correcting ID, IDA, and disability in IBD. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational, bicentr

Iron Therapy in Pediatric Iron Deficiency and Iron-Deficiency Anemia: Efficacy, Safety, and Formulation-Specific Trade-Offs-A Narrative Review.

Background/Objectives: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional disorder in childhood worldwide. It has profound consequences for growth, neurodevelopment, behaviour, and overall health. Despite the long-standing efficacy of oral ferrous salts, their poor gastrointestinal tolerability and adherence challenges have spurred the development of alternative formulations and innovative dosing strategies. Methods: We conducted a narrative review of national and international guidelines, pediatric randomized controlled trials, observational and cohort studies, cost-effectiveness analyses, d

Prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency anemia in Chinese pregnant women (IRON WOMEN): a national cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The current evidence about anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) during pregnancy remains elusive in China. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of anemia and IDA and their risk factors in Chinese pregnant women. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional survey of pregnant women was conducted during their antenatal visits. Using a multi-stage sampling method, 24 hospitals from 16 provinces across China were selected. Structured questionnaires were administered to collect information from participants and to extract clinical data from electronic medical records.

Iron Deficiency, Iron Deficiency Anemia, and HbA1c Levels in Nondiabetic Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Iron deficiency refers to depleted body iron stores, while iron deficiency anemia (IDA) develops when iron depletion becomes sufficient to impair hemoglobin production. Both conditions may influence glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) independently of circulating glucose and may therefore affect glycemic classification in adults without diabetes. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the association of iron deficiency and IDA with HbA1c levels, while also examining anemia severity, iron-status markers, the effects of iron replacement, and the potential for HbA1c-based glycemic misclassifi

Risk Factors of Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) can effectively improve obesity and its related complications, but it may lead to side effects such as iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA). However, the specific risk factors for ID and IDA after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) remain unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 465 patients who underwent LSG from April 2014 to December 2021. The risk factors for postoperative ID and IDA were evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Patients who underwent LSG from December 2020 to December 2021 were given low-do

Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia: Implications and Impact in Pregnancy, Fetal Development, and Early Childhood Parameters.

A normal pregnancy consumes 500-800 mg of iron from the mother. Premenopausal women have a high incidence of marginal iron stores or iron deficiency (ID), with or without anemia, particularly in the less developed world. Although pregnancy is associated with a "physiologic" anemia largely related to maternal volume expansion; it is paradoxically associated with an increase in erythrocyte production and erythrocyte mass/kg. ID is a limiting factor for this erythrocyte mass expansion and can contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes. This review summarizes erythrocyte and iron balance observed in

Split Daily Oral Iron Dosing Enhances Correction of Iron-Deficiency Anemia in Rats.

Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anemia worldwide. Single oral iron daily supplementation is usually unsatisfactory. We hypothesize dividing the oral iron dose may improve the anemic parameters. To test this hypothesis, forty male Wistar rats were evenly assigned to the following groups (n = 8): Control nonanemic or anemic groups. Anemia was induced by repeated phlebotomy from the orbital plexus under anesthesia for 4 weeks. The anemic rats either received no treatment (IDA group) or received a total oral iron supplementation (7.1 mg/kg/day) for 1 week. Iron was administered in differen

Double trouble: A case of fraternal twins with iron-refractory iron-deficiency anemia.

Iron-refractory iron-deficiency anemia (IRIDA) is a rare autosomal recessive disease that presents in childhood. We report the case of fraternal twins presenting with severe hypochromic microcytic anemia and hypoferritinemia. Two missense mutations affecting the TRMPSS6 gene were identified, consistent with IRIDA. Subsequent parenteral iron therapy improved clinical and blood parameters.

Iron Deficiency Caused by Intestinal Iron Loss-Novel Candidate Genes for Severe Anemia.

The adult human body contains about 4 g of iron. About 1-2 mg of iron is absorbed every day, and in healthy individuals, the same amount is excreted. We describe a patient who presents with severe iron deficiency anemia with hemoglobin levels below 6 g/dL and ferritin levels below 30 ng/mL. Although red blood cell concentrates and intravenous iron have been substituted every month for years, body iron stores remain depleted. Diagnostics have included several esophago-gastro-duodenoscopies, colonoscopies, MRI of the liver, repetitive bone marrow biopsies, psychological analysis, application of

Coexistence of Essential Thrombocythemia, Iron-Refractory Iron Deficiency Anemia and Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-negative myeloproliferative neoplasm. It is characterized by thrombocytosis and megakaryocytic hyperplasia of the bone marrow with JAK2V617F mutation. Iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA) is an autosomal recessive disorder, which is mainly characterized by iron deficiency anemia not responding to oral iron intake, but partially responding to parenteral iron therapy. Recently, it has been shown that IRIDA has stemmed from mutations in the gene TMPRSS6, which encodes a transmembrane serine protease (matriptase-2) expresse

Evaluation of total-dose iron sucrose infusions in patients with iron deficiency anemia.

PURPOSE: The safety and efficacy of a total-dose iron sucrose infusion protocol used in a large, tertiary care teaching hospital were studied. METHODS: Nondialysis-dependent patients ages 18 years or older who received > or =250 mg of iron sucrose as a single i.v. infusion between January 2005 and January 2007 were eligible for study inclusion. The protocol for total-dose iron sucrose infusion was the same for all patients. The total dose of iron sucrose for each patient was calculated using an equation that included the desired hemoglobin (Hb) value, observed Hb level, ideal body weight, and

Effect of iron-supplemented total parenteral nutrition in patients with iron deficiency anemia.

Iron deficiency anemia is common among hospitalized patients, and blood losses from diagnostic phlebotomy increase the likelihood of a negative iron balance. The role for iron supplementation of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in these patients is unclear. Twenty-three patients with iron deficiency anemia were identified. Twelve patients were randomized to receive TPN without iron (group 1) and 11 received TPN supplemented with 10 mg of iron as iron dextran daily (group 2). Both groups were matched for age, serum iron studies, red cell indices, and hemogram. After a 7-d period, the mean serum

High serum iron in human parvovirus-induced aplastic crisis in iron deficiency anemia.

Recent study has shown that the human parvovirus (HPV) is a causative agent of aplastic crisis in hemolytic anemias. In subjects without shortened red blood cell life span, HPV is not associated with symptomatic anemia. A case of iron deficiency anemia revealed by HPV linked to erythroblastopenia is described in a child. On admission, the serum iron was not decreased and other blood chemistry tests were also not consistent with the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia. Abrupt cessation of erythropoiesis induced by HPV infection appeared to prolong plasma iron clearance, which elevated serum iro
