Injectable corticosteroid and local anesthetic preparations: a review for radiologists.

Corticosteroids and local anesthetics are some of the most commonly administered medications in radiology departments. These medications have marked variability in their formulations, which may increase their adverse event profile for specific procedures. In particular, certain corticosteroid preparations are associated with adverse central nervous system (CNS) sequelae. This is most likely due to distal embolization by particulate formulations. Nonparticulate steroid formulations are not associated with such events. Local anesthetics have severe CNS and cardiac adverse effects if injected int

Apnea and seizures following retrobulbar local anesthetic injection.

Surgery on the eye is performed using topical anesthesia, retrobulbar anesthesia, peribulbar anesthesia, and general anesthesia. Retrobulbar anesthesia is associated with a number of complications that include apnea (respiratory arrest), seizures, or both. Although these complications are transient and self-limiting, they can be life-threatening if not recognized and treated early. We report two patients who developed apnea, one of whom had cardiorespiratory arrest; and two other patients who presented with seizures. We provided ventilation with 100% oxygen, treated the hypertension with nicar

[Local anesthetic mixtures in various regional anesthesia procedures].

The use of local anaesthetic mixtures in regional anaesthesia has been discussed controversially. This assumption led us to conduct an inquiry on anaesthesiologist opinion on local anaesthetic mixtures. The study was performed on 131 anaesthesiologists answering a questionnaire. It was asked how often and how many procedures of regional anaesthesia were performed, whether local anaesthetic mixtures were used or not, and what were the most common mixtures. Other questions were in what kind of regional anaesthesia mixtures were applied, and which causes led to the use of local anaesthetic mixtur

Vagotomy by the local anesthetic procaine hydrochloride: a study in the rat.

Transmission of nerve impulses is prevented by the local anesthetic procaine hydrochloride. This study was undertaken in rat models, in which the vagus nerve mediates gastric acid secretion, to examine the action of 1 mL of 5% oral procaine on this secretion. The H+ output (mean +/- SEM) associated with pylorus ligation for 1 h (61 +/- 7 mumol) was depressed by vagotomy or procaine (4.7 +/- 0.5 mumol and 5.8 +/- 0.7 mumol, respectively; p less than 0.001). In the rat without pylorus ligation, reserpine (0.1 mg/kg, ip) stimulated H+ output .4 +/- 0.7 mumol; p less than 0.001). Vagotomy or proca

Postoperative pain relief using local anesthetic instillation.

Effective pain control following surgery is a concern. Oral narcotic agents may be effective yet have many side effects. Parenteral agents are impractical in outpatient procedures. Local blocks may distort tissue planes and require additional time and technical skill to administer. We have found that instillation of local anesthetic (0.5% bupivacaine [Marcaine, Sensorcaine]) into the wound prior to closure is a safe and effective means of providing significant reduction in postoperative foot pain.

The local anesthetic effect of cyproheptadine on mammalian nerve fibres.

The local anesthetic effect of cyproheptadine on nerve fibres in the rabbit's cervical vagus and sciatic nerve was studied by the single sucrose-gap technique. Local anesthetics such as procaine and tetracaine, and an antihistaminic with local anesthetic activity, diphenhydramine, were studied for comparison. Increasing concentrations of cypropheptadine, starting from 5 x 10(-5) M, produced a dose-related fall in the amplitude of the compound action potential of the vagus nerve without significant change in the resting membrane potential. A complete reversibility of the local anesthetic effect

From local anesthetics to antibacterial agents: design, synthesis, and activity evaluation of dyclonine quaternary ammonium salt derivatives.

The discovery of antibiotics with novel structures is a crucial strategy to combat antibiotic resistance. This study was motivated by the reported antibacterial activity of local anesthetics. Dyclonine hydrochloride, which shows the highest antibacterial activity among local anesthetics, was selected as the structural scaffold. Based on the structural characteristics of quaternary ammonium salt antibiotics, a series of dyclonine quaternary ammonium salt derivatives were designed and synthesized, and their analgesic and antibacterial activities were evaluated. The target compounds exhibited alm

Local anesthetics and antibiotics display synergistic and antagonistic drug interactions against pathogens causing septic arthritis in horses.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the in vitro efficacy of antibiotics (amikacin, ceftiofur, and gentamicin) in combination with local anesthetics (LAs; bupivacaine hydrochloride, lidocaine hydrochloride, and mepivacaine hydrochloride), a combination commonly performed for IA injectate and regional limb perfusion (RLP) in horses. METHODS: 17 equine clinical isolates were tested by the checkerboard method for their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against a combination of concentrations of LAs and antibiotics from August 2020 through December 2023. RESULTS: For the majority of combinations, the

[Effects of local anesthetics (procaine, tetracaine) on slow calcium permeability and contraction of frog skeletal muscle fiber].

Slow inward calcium current and contraction were simultaneously recorded from isolated muscle fibres. When the release of calcium form the SR was blocked by local anaesthetics (Procaine, Tetracaine), the strict correlation between these two parameters was no longer obtained, suggesting that a calcium induced calcium release mechanism is necessary for the activation of the contractile proteins by the slow inward calcium current.

Effect of a topical anesthetic cream (EMLA) in reducing pain caused by infiltration of local anesthetic in eyelid surgery.

EMLA (eutectic mixture of local anesthetics) cream is a topical formulation of a mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine. It has been used to achieve local analgesia after application under an occlusive dressing. We carried out a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial to assess the effect of 5% EMLA (25 mg/mL of lidocaine and of prilocaine) in reducing the pain caused by infiltration of local anesthetic in eyelid surgery. Pain was assessed by means of a modified visual analogue scale ranging from 0 (no pain) to 10 (excruciating pain) in 25 consecutive patients (average age 65 years) und
