[Allergic contact dermatitis to commonly used antiseptics in clinical settings].

Antiseptics are widely used in medical and daily settings. They are essential for preventing infections and ensuring safety during surgical procedures, wound care, and even hand hygiene. However, their repeated or prolonged use can cause allergic reactions, including irritant and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). It is important to recognize contact allergy to antiseptics and differentiate it from an infectious complication in postoperative or traumatic wounds. Patch testing is crucial for confirming a contact allergy and identifying the responsible allergen(s) especially if the antiseptic co

Advances in the use of chlorhexidine for periodontitis treatment in diabetic patients: A review.

Periodontitis and diabetes mellitus exhibit a bidirectional relationship. This narrative review descriptively outlines the role of chlorhexidine in the periodontal treatment of diabetic patients, focusing on its antimicrobial mechanisms against microbial communities and its antiplaque effects. Although chlorhexidine is proven to be effective in combating microbial presence and improving gingivitis with substantial supporting evidence, its impact on glycemic control and insulin resistance in diabetic patients remains contentious. Additionally, the effectiveness of chlorhexidine as an adjunctive

The "Syringe Hickey": An Alternative Skin Marking Method for Lumbar Puncture.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar puncture is a procedure that is commonly performed in emergency departments. Despite their absence from procedure kits, emergency physicians often use skin markers to delineate landmarks for a lumbar puncture. We prefer to create a temporary indentation in the skin using the suction of a syringe. This "syringe hickey" eliminates the need for a skin marker. DISCUSSION: We created a photo demonstration comparing the syringe hickey to a skin marker for site marking. The syringe hickey was created using a 10-mL syringe aspirated to 5 mL on the forearm for 1 min. The syringe hic

Efficacy of antiseptics for rubber dam sterilization prior to endodontic treatment.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the efficacy of various antiseptics for disinfection of rubber dams used during endodontic treatment, the duration of disinfection effectiveness, and the disinfection protocol employed by dental schools in Thailand. METHODS: The efficacy of 10% povidone-iodine, 1.5% tincture iodine and 70% ethyl alcohol in eliminating Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) and Candida albicans (C. albicans) on the rubber dam was investigated. Time duration of disinfection was evaluated at 0, 30, 60, and 120 min. The two-step disinfection method adopted at Thai dental school was e

Xylityl Sesquicaprylate Efficacy as an Antiseptic Ingredient for Oral Care Products (Mouthwash): An In Vitro Screening Investigation against Eight Microorganisms.

For dental caries and periodontal diseases initiated by dental plaque (as bacterial communities) and to inhibit the growth of oral pathogenic bacteria, oral care products containing antiseptic active ingredients are highly recommended, nonetheless, side effects of such actives are a concern (teeth discoloration/staining and taste perception, for example). In this context, we challenged xylityl sesquicaprylate, an antiseptic compound from natural resources, as an active ingredient to be used in an alcohol-free mouthwash formulation. The xylityl sesquicaprylate sample was compared to a respectiv

Evaluating bacterial contamination of free bone fragments falling to the ground and the effectiveness of antiseptic solutions.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the contamination incidence rate of bone fragments that have been dropped on the floor of the operating theatre, as well as how effective antimicrobial solutions are at decontaminating them. METHODS: Bone fragments obtained after 30 total knee arthroplasties were used in the study. Inert pieces of bone emerging after the bone cuts during total knee arthroplasty were divided into 1 × 1 cm fragments. The bone fragments were first left in free fall on the floor of the operating theatre and then were kept in a number of antimicrobial solutions for 15 s. Su

Comparison of topical treatment methods used in recurrent anterior epistaxis: a randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent epistaxis is a common medical problem faced by ENT specialists, emergency physicians, and pediatricians. The facts that many treatment modalities are being searched and no single treatment method is universally accepted yet support this information. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of topical antiseptic ointment, topical decongestant ointment and chemical cauterization treatments, which are frequently used in recurrent anterior epistaxis, both singly and in combination. MATERIAL-METHODS: Between August 2017 and February 2018, 137 patients who were

Evaluation of in Vitro Bactericidal Activity of 1.5% Olanexidine Gluconate, a Novel Biguanide Antiseptic Agent.

Recently, 1.5% olanexidine gluconate, a biguanide compounds, was launched as a new antiseptic agent in Japan. However, the comprehensive bactericidal spectrum of olanexidine gluconate is still unknown. In this study, we evaluated in vitro bactericidal activity of olanexidine gluconate using time-kill assay against various bacteria, mycobacteria, and fungi. With the exception of Burkholderia cepacia and Mycobacterium spp., 1.5% olanexidine gluconate exhibited fast-acting (≤60 s) bactericidal activity against all tested Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including vancomycin-resistant Ent

Can Chemical Mouthwash Agents Achieve Plaque/Gingivitis Control?

Also note that structured abstracts are not allowed per journal style: What is the effect of a mouthwash containing various active chemical ingredients on plaque control and managing gingivitis in adults based on evidence gathered from existing systematic reviews? The summarized evidence suggests that mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine(CHX) and essential oils (EO) had a large effect supported by a strong body of evidence. Also there was strong evidence for a moderate effect of cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC). Evidence suggests that a CHX mouthwash is the first choice, the most reliable alterna

[The place of chemical products in oral hygiene for the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease].

The mechanical elimination of the bacteria plaque is the basis of the prevention and the treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis. Chemicals products used in the control of supra and subgingival plaque show a great importance because of individual and professional difficulties which constitute an impediment to the effective elimination of the bacteria plaque. However, by this time, there's no miracle product for oral hygiene capable at long term to take over from the tooth-brush and paste. The use at long term of chemicals in the bacteria plaque control can't be recommended because of their f

Local delivery of antimicrobial agents for the treatment of periodontal diseases.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by groups of specific microorganisms. Aggressive forms of periodontitis can be localized or generalized. The concept that localized problem sites may be treated by local drug delivery appears attractive as the antimicrobial agent is delivered within periodontal pockets and the therapy is targeted on specific pathogenic microorganisms. Local delivery of antimicrobial agents using controlled release systems should be considered as adjunctive to mechanical debridement for the treatment of localized forms of per

[Verification of the effectiveness of neutralization in the in vivo study of antiseptics].

Well defined controls of the effectiveness of antiseptic neutralizing agents in vitro already exist (Afnor Standards for antiseptics and disinfectants). Conversely, there is currently no standard method for verifying how effectively such agents neutralize antiseptics which have been applied to the skin. We describe a method in which the neutralizing solution is first applied to the antiseptic-treated skin and then filtered to remove skin flora. The effect of the neutralizing agent is then checked using a test organism (Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 14990) in parallel with four controls: viab
