Social transfer of pathogenic fungus promotes active immunisation in ant colonies.

Due to the omnipresent risk of epidemics, insect societies have evolved sophisticated disease defences at the individual and colony level. An intriguing yet little understood phenomenon is that social contact to pathogen-exposed individuals reduces susceptibility of previously naive nestmates to this pathogen. We tested whether such social immunisation in Lasius ants against the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae is based on active upregulation of the immune system of nestmates following contact to an infectious individual or passive protection via transfer of immune effectors amon

The evolution of "deformed" brains in ant-like stone beetles (Scydmaeninae, Staphylinidae).

We present the first study of the central nervous system of adult representatives of Scydmaeninae. Histological staining, scanning electron microscopy and computer-based 3D reconstruction techniques were used to document the shape and configuration of the major cephalic elements of the central nervous system and to explain its anomalies compared to other Coleoptera. For the first time we report the presence of cephalic glands in ant-like stone beetles: in Scydmaenus (Cholerus) hellwigii openings of voluminous glands are located near the occipital constriction and their secretion accumulates in

Clinicopathological features of senile systemic amyloidosis: an ante- and post-mortem study.

Senile systemic amyloidosis is a common age-related amyloidosis that involves accumulation of wild-type transthyretin, with cardiac dysfunction being a predominant result. The importance of obtaining an accurate diagnosis of senile systemic amyloidosis has been increasingly recognized, so that novel treatments are being developed. However, the clinicopathological features of senile systemic amyloidosis remain to be completely understood. Here, we evaluated cardiac specimens from 181 consecutive post-mortem cases older than 40 years, including 6 cases of senile systemic amyloidosis, and 5 cases

Health insurance and ex ante moral hazard: evidence from Medicare.

Basic economic theory suggests that health insurance coverage may cause a reduction in prevention activities, but empirical studies have yet to provide much evidence to support this prediction. However, in other insurance contexts that involve adverse health events, evidence of ex ante moral hazard is more consistent. In this paper, we extend the analysis of the effect of health insurance on health behaviors by allowing for the possibility that health insurance has a direct (ex ante moral hazard) and indirect effect on health behaviors. The indirect effect works through changes in health promo

Black ant stings caused by Pachycondyla sennaarensis: a significant health hazard.

Several species of ants cause stings, but not all lead to allergic reactions. We present a series of cases of allergic reactions following insect bites or stings that presented to our emergency department and that were caused by the black samsum ant (Pachycondyla sennaarensis). Reactions ranged from mild allergic reactions to severe anaphylactic shock. Patients were treated with subcutaneous epinephrine 0.3 mg, intravenous methylprednisolone 125 mg, intravenous diphenhydramine HCl 50 mg, and intravenous normal saline as appropriate. These cases illustrate the range of clinical presentations to

Ante- and intra-partum factors that predict increased need for neonatal resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: In the absence of identified risk factors, 7% of term newly borns require PPV-ETT (positive pressure ventilation and/or endotracheal intubation). Factors increasing need for resuscitation, and therefore for individuals with advanced resuscitation skills, require further evaluation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the predictive value of ante- and intra-partum risk factors for PPV-ETT in "at-risk" deliveries. DESIGN/METHODS: Over a 30-month period, the neonatal resuscitation team (NRT) at the tertiary perinatal centre in St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador, prospectively recorded reasons

Anaphylaxis caused by imported red fire ant stings in Málaga, Spain.

A 27-year-old woman suffered from anaphylaxis after being stung by Solenopsis invicta ants while she was handling wood from South America. The patient reported no previous adverse reactions to stings by other hymenopteran species. Intradermal skin tests with hymenoptera venom (Vespula vulgaris, Polistes species, Apis melifera) were negative. Serum specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E yielded positive results for S invicta (5.28 kU/L) and negative results for A melifera, Ves v 5 and Pol a 5. Immunodetection assays showed the presence of serum IgE against the Sol i 2 allergen. The patient had probably

Respiratory allergy to the indoor ant (Monomorium pharaonis) not related to sting allergy.

BACKGROUND: Many studies are available on systemic reactions to ant sting, but few have described the direct role of ants in respiratory allergy. The nonstinging house ant, Monomorium pharaonis (pharaoh ant), is a highly infesting species in indoor environments. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the pharaoh ant is an indoor source of aeroallergens. METHODS: Two patients with asthma who lived in homes with ant infestation were enrolled. Pharaoh ants were collected at the patients' homes, and crude extracts were prepared. Skin prick tests with ant extracts were performed. Specific IgE to pharaoh

Ante- and perinatal factors for cerebral palsy: case-control study in Estonia.

Establishing consistency between cerebral palsy registries in reporting of new cases enables more effective collaboration in terms of researching predisposing factors. To identify antenatal and intrapartum risk factors for cerebral palsy in the Estonian population, we undertook a matched case-control study of 153 children with cerebral palsy, ascertained from a population-based survey. One hundred two maternal, antenatal, and intrapartum variables were initially retrieved from medical records. Main outcome measures were the odds ratio estimates of relative risk of cerebral palsy. As a result o

Furosemide action on cerebellar GABA(A) receptors in alcohol-sensitive ANT rats.

Furosemide increases the basal tert-[35S]butylbicyclophosphorothionate ([35S]TBPS) binding and reverses the inhibition of the binding by gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the cerebellar GABA(A) receptors containing the alpha6 and beta2/beta3 subunits. These effects are less pronounced in the alcohol-sensitive (ANT) than in the alcohol-insensitive (AT) rat line. The difference between the rat lines in the increase of basal [35S]TBPS binding was removed after a longer preincubation with ethylendiaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) containing buffer, but long preincubation did not reduce the GABA conten

[Cancer of the skin tube--late complication of the ante-thoracic substitution for the esophagus].

The authors report on two patients suffering from benign oesophageal stricture reconstructed by a skin tube. In both skin tube there are developed a malignancy which infiltrated the skin of the chest wall. During one session they performed the removal of the skin tube and the antethoracic reconstruction with ileocolon. The large defect on the thorax was covered in both cases with a latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap. This provided satisfactory functional and cosmetic result. They point out the effectiveness of the cytostatic combination they administered. Attention should be drawn to the use o

[Pregnancy after ejaculatio ante portas in a patient with an anatomical obstruction to intercourse].

Pregnancies with intact hymen respectiverly without immissio penis are very events. There is reported about a 36 year old women, which had been pregnant following ejaculatio between the upper parts of the thigh. An immissio penis was impossible since long time because of a heavy defect of the pelvis. The introitus vaginae could be passed only with Hegar dilatator of number 3. Contraception therefore in the mind of the patient was not necessary. Diagnosis of pregnancy in the 17th gestational week resulted accidentally by ultrasound. Pregnancy was terminated at term section and tubal ligation.

Insecticidal and repellent activity of cinnamic acid derivatives: investigating alternative products to control imported fire ants (Formicidae: Hymenoptera).

Trans-cinnamic acid and its derivatives were investigated against Solenopsis invicta Buren (RIFA), Solenopsis richteri Forel (BIFA), and reproductively functional hybrid (HIFA) for their repellency and toxicity. A range of serial concentrations starting from 156 µg/g to the failure of treatments were evaluated. Removal of treated sand in a digging bioassay was used as the criterion for repellency. Treatments were considered active until the removal of treated sand became similar to that in the ethanol control. Based on sand removal, trans-cinnamic acid, benzyl cinnamate and phenethyl cinnamate

Latent gene network expression underlies partial re-evolution of a polyphenic trait in the worker caste of ants.

Polyphenisms-where alternative phenotypes develop from a single genome in response to environmental cues-are not only widespread in nature, but also occur at multiple levels of biological organization, from cells to individuals to societies. Polyphenism is thought to promote phenotypic diversification through the gain, loss, and re-evolution of alternative phenotypes. After the origin of a polyphenism, one of the alternative phenotypes often retains the developmental capacity to produce the ancestral trait, thereby permitting the other to evolve rapidly. Yet, little is known about the developm

Venomics survey of six myrmicine ants provides insights into the molecular and structural diversity of their peptide toxins.

Among ants, Myrmicinae represents the most speciose subfamily. The venom composition previously described for these social insects is extremely variable, with alkaloids predominant in some genera while, conversely, proteomics studies have revealed that some myrmicine ant venoms are peptide-rich. Using integrated transcriptomic and proteomic approaches, we characterized the venom peptidomes of six ants belonging to the different tribes of Myrmicinae. We identified a total of 79 myrmicitoxins precursors which can be classified into 38 peptide families according to their mature sequences. Myrmici

The genome of Rhizobiales bacteria in predatory ants reveals urease gene functions but no genes for nitrogen fixation.

Gut-associated microbiota of ants include Rhizobiales bacteria with affiliation to the genus Bartonella. These bacteria may enable the ants to fix atmospheric nitrogen, but no genomes have been sequenced yet to test the hypothesis. Sequence reads from a member of the Rhizobiales were identified in the data collected in a genome project of the ant Harpegnathos saltator. We present an analysis of the closed 1.86 Mb genome of the ant-associated bacterium, for which we suggest the species name Candidatus Tokpelaia hoelldoblerii. A phylogenetic analysis reveals a relationship to Bartonella and Bruc

Microhabitat and body size effects on heat tolerance: implications for responses to climate change (army ants: Formicidae, Ecitoninae).

1. Models that predict organismal and population responses to climate change may be improved by considering ecological factors that affect species thermal tolerance. Species differences in microhabitat use can expose animals to diverse thermal selective environments at a given site and may cause sympatric species to evolve different thermal tolerances. 2. We tested the hypothesis that species differences in body size and microhabitat use (above- vs. below-ground activity) would correspond to differences in thermal tolerance (maximum critical temperatures: CTmax ). Thermal buffering effects of

Comparative morphology and chemical profile of the metapleural gland in two ants: Paraponera clavata and Pachycondyla crassinoda.

Ants possess a pair of metapleural glands whose secretions are associated with antimicrobial defense and colony hygiene. Despite their importance, comparative studies integrating morphology and chemical characterization of these glands remain limited, particularly among poneromorph ants. This study investigated the hypothesis that species belonging to different ant lineages exhibit differences in the morphology and chemical composition of the metapleural glands. These features were evaluated in workers of Paraponera clavata (Fabricius, 1775) (Paraponerinae) and Pachycondyla crassinoda (Latreil

Streptomyces odontomachi sp. nov., a novel actinobacterium with antimicrobial potential isolated from ants (Odontomachus simillimus Smith, 1858).

A new actinomycete strain, ODS25T, exhibited antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Kocuria rhizophila, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, was isolated from the ants, Odontomachus simillimus, collected from National Science Museum Thailand, Pathum Thani, Thailand. A polyphasic technique was used to characterize the taxonomic position. The morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of the strain are typical of members of the genus Streptomyces. Strain ODS25T contained ll-diaminopimelic and glucose in the whole-cell hydrolysate. T

Hostility prevents the tragedy of the commons in metapopulation with asymmetric migration: A lesson from queenless ants.

A colony of the queenless ant species, Pristomyrmex punctatus, can broadly be seen as consisting of small-body sized worker ants and relatively larger body-sized cheater ants. Hence, in the presence of intercolony migration, a set of constituent colonies act as a metapopulation exclusively composed of cooperators and defectors. Such a setup facilitates an evolutionary game-theoretic replication-selection model of population dynamics of the ants in a metapopulation. Using the model, we analytically probe the effects of territoriality induced hostility. Such hostility in the ant metapopulation p
