Parent Description of Anxiety in Angelman Syndrome.

Anxiety is being increasingly identified in Angelman syndrome (AS). Qualitative questions and quantitative assessments were used to evaluate for anxiety in 50 subjects with AS. In-person evaluations assessed behaviors concerning for anxiety and circumstances wherein they occurred. Caregivers completed anxiety and other behavioral rating scales. Caregiver responses were categorized and compared to items from anxiety rating scales. The most common behavioral manifestation of anxiety was "aggression." The most common circumstance was "separation from caregiver/parent." Subjects had elevated score

[Predictive factors in social adaptation disorders in anorexic and bulimic patients].

A lifetime diagnosis of at least one anxiety disorder has been found in 13% to 75% of women with BN (Herzog, Keller, Sacks, Yeh, & Lavori, 1992; Schwalberg, Barlow, Alger, & Howard, 1992), and in 20% to 55% of women with AN, (Herzog et al., 1992, Laessle et al., 1989). Wittchen et al., 1998) have observed that the frequency and degree of disabilities and impairments associated with mental disorders in adolescence are strongly related to comorbidity (notably with anxiety disorders). However, as noted by Wonderlich et al., 1997, no study has compared ED individuals with and without comorbid anxi

Rapid acquisition of emotional information and attentional bias in anxious children.

This study reports on the relationship between evaluative learning (EL) and attentional preference in children with varying degrees of anxiety, as measured by the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children, and varying degrees of parental anxiety, as measured by scores on the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). In the first experiment, 3 age groups (7-8, 10-11 and adults with mean age 26.8 years) were compared on a novel EL method, in which neutral images "morphed" over 1s into either smiling or angry adult faces. There were no differences in EL between the age groups-each showing a strong EL effec

[School phobia, definition and symptoms].

The refusal to go to school has been the subject of studies since the 19th century. It is necessary to separate the notions of truancy and school refusal, leaving that of anxiety-based school refusal. There exists a link between this phenomenon and separation anxiety, a depressive state and family problems.

Prevalence, Phenotypic Correlates and Predictive Factors of Catatonia in Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia, a psychomotor syndrome increasingly recognized in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), remains frequently underdiagnosed due to symptom overlap, particularly in adolescent populations where data remain limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, clinical correlates and predictive factors of catatonia in adolescents with ASD, focusing on sociodemographic, behavioural and affective characteristics. METHODS: A total of 107 adolescents aged 12-20 years with ASD were evaluated at a tertiary child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinic. The diagnos

Clinical Utility of Screening for Anxiety and Depression in Children with Tourette Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is often co-morbid with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Studies of TS, anxiety and depression have found variable results depending on study methodology and sample characteristics. Our aim was to examine the clinical utility of routine screening for anxiety and depression in children with TS. METHODS: Using a clinic-based sample, we evaluated the proportion of children with TS meeting diagnostic criteria for ADHD, OCD, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), separation anxiety disorder (SAD), and major dep

A 3-year follow-up of children with and without behavioral inhibition.

OBJECTIVE: Previous work suggested that children of parents with panic disorder and agoraphobia were likely to be classified as behaviorally inhibited and that behaviorally inhibited children were likely to develop anxiety disorders. Although these findings suggested that "behavioral inhibition to the unfamiliar" may be associated with risk for anxiety disorders in children, longitudinal data were needed to confirm the initial impressions. METHOD: Using DSM-III structured interviews, the authors examined psychiatric disorders at 3-year follow-up in children of two independently ascertained, p

Predictors and time course of response among panic disorder patients treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is well documented as an efficacious treatment for panic disorder. We provided open CBT treatment to patients who subsequently participated in a maintenance treatment study. This article reports on predictors and trajectory of response in 381 participants who completed treatment at 4 sites. METHOD: Participants who met criteria for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (N = 381) completed assessment and entered treatment. Of these, 256 completed 11 sessions of CBT delivered by trained and supervised research therapists. Raters trained to reli

Virtual link between mothers and infants to improve maternal c-section experience: a non-randomized controlled pilot trial.

Skin-to-skin contact is known to help protect against traumatic birth experiences. However, it is sometimes not possible during cesarean sections, causing mother-infant separation. This pilot study explored a supportive alternative by streaming a live video of the newborn to the mother via a head-mounted display during the separation. Conducted in a Swiss hospital, this monocentric open-label non-randomized controlled pilot trial included 71 mothers. When separation occurred in the operating theatre, participants received either the head-mounted display intervention or standard care. Validated

Anxiety disorders and tic severity in juveniles with Tourette's disorder.

OBJECTIVE: It was hypothesized that comorbidity with anxiety disorders would predict tic severity in youths with Tourette's disorder (TD). METHOD: Subjects were 190 youths meeting DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria for TD who were consecutively referred to a pediatric psychopharmacology program between 1994 and 1997. Subjects were initially evaluated with a clinical interview and the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Epidemiologic version. Statistical analysis used t tests, chi 2 tests, and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: One hundred thirty-four sub

Distinct Cortical Activation in Adolescents With Social Anxiety Disorder: An fNIRS Study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is prevalent among children and adolescents, manifesting as concerns and anticipatory anxiety in social settings. However, the precise mechanism remains to be elucidated. AIMS: To examine the hemodynamic response patterns in individuals with SAD using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), as well as the association with severity of social anxiety. METHODS: Twenty-nine adolescents diagnosed with SAD, and 36 healthy control (HC) were included in this study. FNIRS was used to access the frontal and temporal cerebral hemodynamics, expressed as Δ

Prevalence of panic disorder and other subtypes of anxiety disorder and their background.

Two hundred and forty-four patients with various subtypes of DSM-III anxiety disorder were found among 3,059 outpatients who visited our clinic consecutively for evaluation for five years. They included 53 patients with panic disorder comprising an outstanding number of patients, about a quarter of patients with anxiety disorder and 1.7% of the whole outpatient population, and 78 with generalized anxiety disorder. Differentiation between these two groups was difficult to make besides their specific clinical features whether the patient had panic attacks or chronic generalized anxiety. The pati

Anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders in parents of children with anxiety disorders.

Examined the prevalence of anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders in the parents of anxiety disordered (AD) children relative to children with no psychological disorder (NPD). The specificity of relationships between child and parent anxiety disorders was also investigated. Results revealed higher prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in parents of AD children relative to NPD children. Specific child-mother relationships were found between child separation anxiety and panic disorder and maternal panic disorder, as were child and maternal social phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, and sp

Exposure to Hazardous Neighborhood Environments in Late Childhood and Anxiety.

This investigation examined the relationship between living in disordered neighborhoods during childhood and anxiety 1 year later. Objective measures of neighborhood environment and individual data from a study of mental health in suburban children were utilized. Linear regression models were used to assess relationships between neighborhood hazard and anxiety. Childhood neighborhood disorder was inversely associated with generalized anxiety (β = 0.037, p<0.01) and social phobia (β = -0.33, p=0.03), but not other forms of anxiety including separation anxiety or panic disorder. We suspect that

The curious case of the "inseparable child".

Streptococcal infections in children rarely lead to neuropsychiatric manifestations referred to as pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections. The common sequelae include tics, Tourette's syndrome or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Rare presentations may include separation anxiety disorder, body dysmorphic disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. We present a case of a 10-year-old child that presented primarily with abrupt onset of separation anxiety without any other neuropsychiatric manifestations such as tics or obsessive-compulsive

Resistance to early-life stress in mice: effects of genetic background and stress duration.

Early-life stress can induce marked behavioral and physiological impairments in adulthood including cognitive deficits, depression, anxiety, and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Although robust rat models of early-life stress exist there are few established effective paradigms in the mouse. Genetic background and protocol parameters used are two critical variables in such model development. Thus we investigated the impact of two different early-life stress protocols in two commonly used inbred mouse strains. C57BL/6 and innately anxious BALB/c male mice were maternally deprived 3 h daily, either
