Anxiety disorders are among the most frequent mental disorders together with affective disorders with a lifetime prevalence of 18%. The pathogenesis of these disorders is complex and includes biological and psychosocial factors. Modern diagnostic classification systems (ICD-10, DSM-IV) differentiate between panic disorder with or without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia and specific phobia. Recommended treatment approaches include psychotherapy as well as pharmacotherapy, which have to be preceded by an empathic psychoeducation. Today, cognitive behavioural psychotherap

OBJECTIVE: Studies on the neurologic effects of high-altitude travel have focused on psychometric and cognitive testing and the long-term effects of hypoxia on memory and cognition. Few authors have discussed overt clinical psychiatric illness during high-altitude travel, and those few have focused on patients with preexisting psychiatric diagnoses. We describe a series of patients with new-onset anxiety disorders at high altitude treated at the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) clinic in Pheriche, Nepal (4240 m) in the spring season of 2006.
METHODS: We report on all 6 cases of anxiety-rela

Although most individuals with recurrent headache disorders in the general population do not experience severe psychopathology, population-based studies and clinical investigations find high rates of comorbidity between headache and mood and anxiety disorders. When present, psychiatric disorders may complicate headache treatment and portend a poorer treatment response. The negative prognosis associated with psychiatric comorbidity emphasizes the importance of the identification of psychopathology among those with headache beginning at an early age, and suggests that the treatment of psychiatri

Comorbidity is the rule with anxiety and depressive disorders. Anxiety and major depressive disorder are often comorbid with each other; these disorders are commonly associated with other psychiatric disorders; and they are frequently found coexisting with long-standing chronic medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. The comorbidity of major depressive and anxiety disorders is associated with barriers to treatment and worse psychiatric outcomes, including treatment resistance, increased risk for suicide, greater chance for recurrence, and greater utilization of

Fluvoxamine is a selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that has proved effective in large double-blind, randomized, controlled trials involving patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and panic disorder. Improvements have also been demonstrated in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as those with a range of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders including binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa, pathological gambling, and body dysmorphic disorder. Several well controlled studies have confirmed the efficacy of fluvoxamine in ch

Fear and anxiety are common experiences throughout childhood and adolescence. Anxiety disorders, along with depression and dysthymia, are characterized as internalizing disorders; they stand in distinction from the externalizing disorders representing such conditions as oppositional-defiant disorder and conduct disorder. Clinicians evaluating anxiety disorders in college youth face the task of differentiating normal, transient, developmentally appropriate expression of anxiety from pathologic states of anxiety. The developmental course of anxiety and depression, its appropriateness, and its bo

Anxiety disorders are relatively common; almost 30% of the population suffer from some form of anxiety disorder at some point during their life. Anxiety and depressive symptoms often co-exist, and for physicians in primary care the boundaries between depression and anxiety disorders (e.g. generalised anxiety disorder [GAD], social anxiety disorder [SAD], and panic disorder) are often fairly fluid. Differences in treatment tend to occur in patients diagnosed with a pure anxiety disorder and those with comorbid anxiety and depression. For example, the proportion of patients with pure GAD who see

OBJECTIVE: This article reviewed the child and adult medical literature on the prevalence of comorbid anxiety disorders in patients with asthma. Theoretical ideas regarding the relatively high comorbidity rates are presented along with a model describing putative interactions between anxiety disorders and asthma.
METHOD: A search of the literature from the last 2 decades using MEDLINE by pairing the word, "asthma," with the following words: "anxiety," "depression," "panic," and "psychological disorders." We located additional research by screening the bibliographies of articles retrieved in t

Venlafaxine extended-release (Effexor XR, Wyeth-Ayerst Co.) is a novel, dual acting serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant, which inhibits the synaptic reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine. Controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of venlafaxine in the treatment of anxiety disorders including social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Generally well-tolerated with side effects that usually abate with continued treatment, venlafaxine is an important alter

Panic disorder and social anxiety disorder are often-overlooked but debilitating disorders that share some common symptoms and treatments. Patients with panic disorder experience unexpected panic attacks and then worry about having more attacks. Those with social anxiety disorder fear doing or saying something embarrassing in social situations. The prevalence of these conditions is about 3% for panic disorder and 13% for social anxiety disorder in the United States and is higher in women than in men. Both disorders are thought to have a familial link and to be related to dysregulation of neuro

This study investigates anxiety and defense styles in eating disorders. Seventy eating disorder (ED) patients and fifty-one female matched control subjects completed State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and 88-items Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ). ED patients were more anxious in actual situations and more anxiety prone in general. They relied on maladaptive action and Image distorting defense style. Bulimic anorexic (BAN) patients and bulimia nervosa (BN) patients differed in defense styles from restrictive anorexic (RAN) patients who displayed no significant difference in either state

Epidemiological studies show that anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and an important cause of functional impairment; they constitute the most frequent menial disorders in the community. Phobias are the most common with the highest rates for simple phobia and agoraphobia. Panic disorder (PD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are less frequent (2% lifetime prevalence), and there are discordant results for social phobia (SP) (2%-16%) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (3%-30%). These studies underline the importance of an accurate definition of disorders using unambiguous diagnosti

The association between tobacco dependence and various forms of anxiety and depressive disorders is well established. The presence of these disorders constitutes a key cause of failure in subjects seeking to stop smoking. In addition to the clinically manifest forms of such anomalies, systematic screening for minor forms of these disorders was performed at the Centre for Tobacco Studies of Créteil, France; as well as the standard questionnaire concerning personal and familial history and current psychological well-being, subjects were asked to complete two self-questionnaires, the HAD (Hospita

Although quality of life (QOL) issues have long been recognized in severe psychiatric disorders, they have only recently come to be considered for the anxiety disorders. Conceptual and methodological developments in the study of QOL are briefly outlined, and the overlap among measures of QOL, functional impairment, and disability is discussed. Existing empirical studies on subjective and objective QOL dimensions in each of the anxiety disorders are then reviewed. QOL has been examined in panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder but has received little attentio

Two experimental paradigms were used to test for the presence of attentional bias in patients with panic disorders and social phobias. The results of the first experiment on the detection of visual probes employing the paradigm of MacLeod et al. indicate specific affects as a function of the physical or social emotional connotation of the probe words. Attention of patients with panic disorders was apparently restricted to words denoting physical threat. No effect related to the threatening connotation of words was observed for the social-phobia patients. In contrast, the control subjects prese
