Progressive apraxia of speech in Quebec French speakers: A case series.

BACKGROUND: The term progressive apraxia of speech (PAOS) is used to describe speakers presenting with isolated or dominant apraxia of speech in the context of a neurodegenerative syndrome, including primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) and dominant progressive apraxia of speech (DAOS), respectively. Its motor speech profile has been increasingly explored in the last decade, but description remains vague and very English oriented, although the effect of speakers' language on motor speech phenotypes is increasingly recognized. Although some studies suggest that speakers presenting with

Locked-In Syndrome: A Systematic Review of Long-Term Management and Prognosis.

Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a neurological disorder in which there is damage to the ventral pons and caudal midbrain. An ischemic cause, such as basilar artery occlusion, can often lead to LIS. LIS has three subtypes: classical, partial, and total. There is loss of motion in the four extremities in classical LIS, loss of horizontal gaze, and aphasia. In partial LIS, the patient still has some motor function. Complete LIS has the worst outcome because patients cannot blink or have vertical gaze, thus rendering them incapable of communicating. Most cases of LIS occur due to ischemic infarcts. Th

Putative sex differences in verbal abilities and language cortex: a critical review.

This review brings together evidence from a diverse field of methods for investigating sex differences in language processing. Differences are found in certain language-related deficits, such as stuttering, dyslexia, autism and schizophrenia. Common to these is that language problems may follow from, rather than cause the deficit. Large studies have been conducted on sex differences in verbal abilities within the normal population, and a careful reading of the results suggests that differences in language proficiency do not exist. Early differences in language acquisition show a slight advanta

Restoration of speech articulatory control and functional connectivity through visually-guided rehabilitation in chronic non-fluent aphasia: A case report study.

Computer-based therapy has shown promise in speech rehabilitation for individuals with language disorders. In this study, we investigated behavioural, acoustic and brain network changes in a patient with chronic non-fluent aphasia who underwent an enriched rehabilitation programme, combining the Ultraspeech-player software with conventional speech therapy, followed by a period of conventional therapy alone. The software provided visualisation of articulatory movements recorded from a reference speaker. Comprehensive assessments, conducted before and after each rehabilitation period, included p

Surgical management of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leakage through temporal bone defects--case series and review of the literature.

Increasing numbers of cases of idiopathic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage through temporal bone defects (TBD) have been recently reported, mainly in otolaryngologic journals. Those cases are referred to as spontaneous temporal bone encephaloceles (TBE). Three surgical approaches have been advocated for this condition: the transmastoid approach (TMA), the middle cranial fossa approach (MCFA), or a combination of both. We conducted a retrospective study of all 11 consecutive patients who underwent 12 middle cranial fossa craniotomies for the treatment of CSF leakage through TBD in our institut

Clinicopathologic and Neuroimaging Correlations of Nonverbal Oral Apraxia in Patients With Neurodegenerative Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nonverbal oral apraxia (NVOA) is the inability to plan, sequence, and execute voluntary oromotor movements in the absence of weakness. In the context of neurodegenerative disease, it remains unclear whether it is linked to a specific underlying pathologic, clinical, or neuroimaging finding. Thus, we aimed to assess the clinicopathologic and neuroimaging associations of NVOA. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of autopsy-confirmed patients previously assessed through an NVOA evaluation tool with a previously published cutpoint to screen for NVOA. We compared

A Function-Led Tailored Speech-Language Intervention in Primary Progressive Aphasia: A Retrospective Observational Pre-Post Study From Routine Clinical Practice.

PURPOSE: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects language abilities. Since no curative or pharmacological treatments are currently available, speech-language therapy represents one of the few clinical intervention options. Furthermore, evidence from routine clinical practice is needed to better characterize language changes associated with tailored, person-centered speech-language therapy approaches in PPA. The aim of this retrospective observational pre-post study was to explore baseline-to-follow-up changes associated with a function-led tailored speech-

Efficacy of rTMS in treating functional impairment in post-stroke patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Most stroke patients suffer from an imbalance in blood supply, which causes severe brain damage leading to functional deficits in motor, sensory, swallowing, cognitive, emotional, and speech functions. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is thought to restore functions impaired during the stroke process and improve the quality of life of stroke patients. However, the efficacy of rTMS in treating post-stroke function impairment varies significantly. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis of the number of patients with effective rTMS in treating post-stroke dysfuncti

How Does iReadMore Therapy Change the Reading Network of Patients with Central Alexia?

Central alexia (CA) is an acquired reading disorder co-occurring with a generalized language deficit (aphasia). The roles of perilesional and ipsilesional tissue in recovery from poststroke aphasia are unclear. We investigated the impact of reading training (using iReadMore, a therapy app) on the connections within and between the right and left hemisphere of the reading network of patients with CA. In patients with pure alexia, iReadMore increased feedback from left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) region to the left occipital (OCC) region. We aimed to identify whether iReadMore therapy was effec

Left-Handers Are Less Lateralized Than Right-Handers for Both Left and Right Hemispheric Functions.

Many neuroscientific techniques have revealed that more left- than right-handers will have unusual cerebral asymmetries for language. After the original emphasis on frequency in the aphasia and epilepsy literatures, most neuropsychology, and neuroimaging efforts rely on estimates of central tendency to compare these two handedness groups on any given measure of asymmetry. The inevitable reduction in mean lateralization in the left-handed group is often postulated as being due to reversed asymmetry in a small subset of them, but it could also be due to a reduced asymmetry in many of the left-ha
