OBJECTIVES: To our knowledge, this study is the first in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to investigate the prevalence of child maltreatment in relation to depressive symptoms and self-esteem.
STUDY DESIGN: Exposure to physical maltreatment, emotional abuse and neglect was evaluated in 518 adolescents (86% response rate) randomly selected from schools in Al Ain in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The Rosenberg self-esteem scale and the Beck Depression Inventory were used to measure self-esteem and depressive symptoms by using multivariate logistic regression analyses.

The natural history of precancerous lesions and cervical cancer in Israeli women differs from that reported in the world. In 2011, 244 women were diagnosed in Israel with invasive cervical cancer, with the mortality of 79 women. The incidence of cervical cancer in Israel is about 5 new cases per year per 100,000 women (5.4 Jewish, 3.2 Arab). This figure is very low compared with statistics presented in other countries and has not changed over the last decades. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at growing risk of HIV infection in many parts of the world; however, the epidemic has not been well explored among this population in most Arab countries. To estimate the prevalence of HIV and related risk behaviors among MSM in Yemen, we recruited 261 adult MSM from the port cities of Aden and Al-Hudaydah through venue- and facility-based sampling.
