The Effects of Specialization and Sex on Anterior Y-Balance Performance in High School Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Sport specialization and movement asymmetry have been separately discussed as potential risk factors for lower extremity injury. Early specialization may lead to the development of movement asymmetries that can predispose an athlete to injury, but this has not been thoroughly examined. HYPOTHESIS: Athletes rated as specialized would exhibit greater between-limb anterior reach asymmetry and decreased anterior reach distance on the Y-balance test (YBT) as compared with nonspecialized high school athletes, and these differences would not be dependent on sex. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sect

Implications of altered autonomic control on sports performance in athletes with spinal cord injury.

It is well known that athletes with spinal cord injury (SCI) may experience altered autonomic physiology that impacts their exercise capacity and sports performance. This is particularly relevant given the ever-increasing number of individuals with SCI who are actively engaged in sports at all levels, from community-based adaptive sports to elite Paralympic competitions. As such, the purpose of this article is to review the present literature regarding the implications of altered autonomic control on the safety and performance of athletes with SCI. A particular emphasis will be placed on the a

Tracking Performance Changes With Running-Stride Variability When Athletes Are Functionally Overreached.

PURPOSE: Stride-to-stride fluctuations in running-stride interval display long-range correlations that break down in the presence of fatigue accumulated during an exhaustive run. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether long-range correlations in running-stride interval were reduced by fatigue accumulated during prolonged exposure to a high training load (functional overreaching) and were associated with decrements in performance caused by functional overreaching. METHODS: Ten trained male runners completed 7 d of light training (LT7), 14 d of heavy training (HT14) designed to indu

The effects of rear-wheel camber on maximal effort mobility performance in wheelchair athletes.

This study examined the effect of rear-wheel camber on maximal effort wheelchair mobility performance. 14 highly trained wheelchair court sport athletes performed a battery of field tests in 4 standardised camber settings (15°, 18°, 20°, 24°) with performance analysed using a velocometer. 20 m sprint times reduced in 18° (5.89±0.47 s, P=0.011) and 20° camber (5.93±0.47 s, P=0.030) compared with 24° (6.05±0.45 s). Large effect sizes revealed that 18° camber enabled greater acceleration over the first 2 (r=0.53, 95% CI=0.004 to 0.239) and 3 (r=0.59, 95% CI=0.017 to 0.170) pushes compared with 24

Voluntary fluid intake, hydration status, and aerobic performance of adolescent athletes in the heat.

We determined whether beverage flavoring and composition would stimulate voluntary drink intake, prevent dehydration, and maintain exercise performance in heat-acclimated adolescent males running in the heat. Eight adolescent (age, 13.7 ± 1.1 years) runners (peak oxygen uptake, 59.5 ± 4.0 mL·kg-1·min-1) underwent at least four 80-min exercise heat-acclimation sessions before completing 3 experimental sessions. All sessions were performed at 30 °C and 60%-65% relative humidity. Each experimental session consisted of five 15-min treadmill runs at a speed eliciting 65% peak oxygen uptake, with a

Effects of formoterol on endurance performance in athletes at an ambient temperature of -20 degrees C.

The use of inhaled beta2-agonists is restricted in sports. No benefit of inhaled formoterol upon performance was found in healthy athletes under normal climatic conditions, but it has not been investigated whether formoterol improves performance in athletes during exposure to cold. To investigate the effect of inhaled formoterol vs placebo upon performance and lung function at -20 degrees C in 20 healthy male athletes. We used a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design. The subjects performed a run until exhaustion after inhaled study drug. The speed was 95% of the predet

Performance-influencing factors in homogeneous groups of top athletes: a cross-sectional study.

Sport scientists have identified many factors as prerequisites for a good athletic performance in various sports. It is not clear whether these factors also influence the best performers in the homogeneous groups of top athletes selected for national teams. In this study, this issue is addressed with members of the Dutch National Junior Speed Skating Team. A total of 237 different technical, physiological, anthropometrical, and psychological parameters were collected, including many that correlated with performance in previous studies. High speed film analyses during the National Championships

[Effects of doses of cereal foods and zinc on different blood parameters in performing athletes].

A total of 51 athletes, randomly divided into two groups (with or without zinc supplementation) and respective two subgroups (with or without cereal diet) had been tested for their serum levels in respect of zinc, iron, copper, phosphorus and potassium over a period of 8 weeks, i.e. during a period of competition. Furthermore, subpopulations of lymphocytes were defined. Modifications of the immunologic defense mechanism with special regard to the zinc level could, however, not be detected. Minerals, i.e. zinc and iron revealed to decrease significantly during simultaneous uptake of certain amo

Change-of-Direction Performance and Its Deficits in Relation to Countermovement-Jump Height and Phase-Specific Performance Among Female Athletes.

PURPOSE: Jump and linear sprint performances both correlate with pro-agility performance. However, correlation does not imply causation, and potential confounders may affect the correlation. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between change-of-direction (COD) performance and COD deficits (COD-D) in linear-sprint and countermovement-jump (CMJ) -related performance using multiple stepwise linear-regression models. METHODS: The study included 42 female national-level intercollegiate athletes. The 10- and 20-m linear-sprint and pro-agility times, COD-D, CMJ height, and phas

The Effect of Strength Training Methods on Middle-Distance and Long-Distance Runners' Athletic Performance: A Systematic Review with Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The running performance of middle-distance and long-distance runners is determined by factors such as maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), velocity at VO2max (vVO2max), maximum metabolic steady state (MMSS), running economy, and sprint capacity. Strength training is a proven strategy for improving running performance in endurance runners. However, the effects of different strength training methods on the determinants of running performance are unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to compare the effect of different strength training methods (e.g.,

From Athletic Performance to Functional Ageing: Shared Genetic Architecture, Redox-Inflammatory Pathways and Functional Reserve Across the Life Course-A Narrative Review.

Physical performance can be understood as a continuum throughout the life course, ranging from peak athletic ability in early life to the preservation of mobility and functional independence in old age. This narrative review explores whether the biological and genetic pathways involved in athletic performance might also modulate the risk of geriatric motor dysfunctions (GMDs), a conceptual umbrella proposed here for sarcopenia, dynapenia, lower-limb weakness and the motor component of physical frailty. The available evidence suggests a convergence between performance and motor decline in mecha
