Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology1994eng
BACKGROUND: The hazards of acute radiation exposure are well known. Bone marrow failure from total body gamma or neutron irradiation is the most clinically relevant aspect of acute radiation disease. With nonhomogeneous exposure, as is characteristic in accidents, other organ systems, such as the skin, may be more important in determining clinical prognosis. This became obvious in the two worst radiation accidents since 1945, the Chernobyl accident in April 1986 and the Goiania accident in September 1987.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe the characteristic chronic sequelae of accidental

The accidental gamma radiation exposure of an industrial radiography worker and the cytogenetic examination of the worker's blood lymphocytes are described here. The exposure of the worker was due to a malfunction at the entrance into the depleted uranium-shielding device of a (192)Ir source during operation. Because the source was sealed no additional beta radiation exposure was assumed. The worker's thermoluminescent dosimeter indicated an absorbed dose of 0.078 Sv, which presumably took place in December 2013. No clinical symptoms were reported in the case history after the potential exposu

BACKGROUND: Second malignancies are a well recognized complication of radiation therapy.
METHODS: We performed a computer search of the literature using the Medline Database for Pericardial Tumors and Post-Irradiation Sarcomas.
RESULTS: The case history of a patient who developed a radiation-induced pericardial angiosarcoma is described. We present a detailed review of pericardial sarcomas.
CONCLUSIONS: We believe this to be the first report of a radiation-induced pericardial sarcoma. The importance of continued long-term observation for patients who receive mediastinal irradiation is stres

BACKGROUND: Radiation recall refers to a tissue reaction produced by a chemotherapeutic agent in a previously irradiated field that would not occur in a nonirradiated field. A number of agents have been reported to cause radiation recall. Recently, there have been case reports of recall dermatitis from paclitaxel treatment.
METHODS: A patient with metastatic lung cancer received palliative radiation to her mediastinum and ribs. Because of disease progression, she subsequently received paclitaxel.
RESULTS: After paclitaxel administration, the patient became acutely dyspneic. A subsequent ches

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced morphea is a fibro-inflammatory remodelling process of the subcutaneous connective tissue caused by ionising radiation, most commonly in the context of breast cancer treatment. The underlying pathomechanisms and putative risk factors are unknown. Therefore, misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment pose a significant problem in the care of those patients.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to provide an overview as well as guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of radiation-induced morphea based on current case reports and review articles.

Our current knowledge of the mechanisms underlying the induction of bystander effects by low doses of high or low LET ionizing radiation is reviewed. The question of what actually constitutes a protective effect is discussed in the context of adaptive (often referred to as hormetic or protective) responses. Finally the review considers critically, how bystander effects may be related to observed adaptive responses or other seemingly protective effects of low doses exposures. Bystander effects induce responses at the tissue level, which are similar to generalized stress responses. Most of the w

BACKGROUND: Human liver has an unusual sensitivity to radiation that limits its use in cancer therapy or in preconditioning for hepatocyte transplantation. Because the characteristic veno-occlusive lesions of radiation-induced liver disease do not occur in rodents, there has been no experimental model to investigate the limits of safe radiation therapy or explore the pathogenesis of hepatic veno-occlusive disease.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We performed a dose-escalation study in a primate, the cynomolgus monkey, using hypofractionated stereotactic body radiotherapy in 13 animals.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies that used the noninvasive laser flare-cell meter (LFCM) have demonstrated impairment of the blood-aqueous barriers in eyes with uveal melanoma. Herein we report the use of the LFCM in the follow-up of brachytherapy in 2 patients after radiation therapy with iodine 125 for choroidal melanoma.
CASE REPORT: Two women (59-and 57-years-old) with choroidal melanoma who were treated with iodine 125-plaque, were followed-up for 24 and 36 months, respectively. Complete ophthalmological examination including tyndallometry and echography were performed regularly. Following r

BACKGROUND: Patients with incurable but not-yet-biopsied cancers sometimes require urgent palliative radiation. However, wait-times for biopsy procedures and pathologic results can delay treatment, with significant consequences to patient quality of life and/or the chance of irreversible cancer complications. There is no prospective data to guide empirical decision-making in these urgent, palliative contexts.
METHODS: In this prospective single-arm pragmatic clinical trial, we will enrol 48 patients with incurable cancer where a biopsy is delaying urgent palliative radiation. Patients will re

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There has been growing concern about the media's negative portrayal of radiation oncology in recent years. Our study shows changes in media sentiment toward radiotherapy over the years, identifies prevalent themes, and analyzes their shifts over time.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed articles about radiation oncology published in The New York Times since the journal's inception in 1851. Initially, we collected 30 427 articles containing the keywords "radiation" or "radiotherapy" up to July 2023. In the next step, we selected 342 articles on radiation oncology using k

BACKGROUND: Despite recent improvements in radiation safety, interventionalists are increasingly exposed to radiation during cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) procedures. The RADPAD was designed as a protective scatter-radiation absorbing shield with the goal of reducing scatter radiation. Early studies demonstrated between a 20 and 62 % relative reduction in scatter radiation. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the RADPAD through a randomized controlled trial in a large contemporary CCL.
DESIGN: The ATTENUATE (v) Trial is an investigator-initiated, prospective, ran

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy with or without chemotherapy is commonly used as an adjunct or alternative to surgery for treating head and neck cancer (HNC). In rare cases, radiation-induced side effects such as posterior pharyngeal wall necrosis, fistula formation, and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) can lead to dangerous complications of the cervical spine (C-spine).
METHODS: We conducted a literature review on C-spine ORN in HNC, and we reported four additional cases following the treatment of oropharyngeal carcinoma.
RESULTS: We identified 26 reported cases of C-spine ORN following radiation for

According to the doctrine underlying the current radiation protection regulations each, no matter how small, exposure to ionizing radiation may be carcinogenic. However, numerous epidemiological observations demonstrate that cancer incidence and/or mortality are not elevated among inhabitants of the high- versus low-natural-background radiation areas and homes. Results of our own and other authors' studies described in this paper bear testimony to the possibility that stimulation of the anti-neoplastic immune surveillance mediated by NK lymphocytes and activated macrophages explains, at least
