Overview of Zoonotic Diseases in Turkey: The One Health Concept and Future Threats.

Zoonotic infections are globally important diseases and lead to huge economic losses in both low- and middle-income and high-income countries. Global warming, environmental and ecological changes, illegal movement of animals and humans, regional civil wars, and poverty are predisposing factors for the emergence of zoonotic infections and their distribution worldwide; they are also a big threat for the future. In addition, environmental pollution and antimicrobial resistance are immense serious threats and dangers to prevent and control zoonotic infections. The natural location of Turkey allows

Twenty Years of Listeria in Brazil: Occurrence of Listeria Species and Listeria monocytogenes Serovars in Food Samples in Brazil between 1990 and 2012.

Listeria spp. isolated from different food products and collected from 12 Brazilian states were sent to the Laboratory of Bacterial Zoonoses (Oswaldo Cruz Institute, Brazil) for identification. The aims of this study were to characterize these isolates, from 1990 to 2012, by using biochemical, morphological, and serotyping tests, and to analyze the distribution of L. monocytogenes serotypes on different food products and geographical locations. Serotyping was performed using polyclonal somatic and flagellar antisera. Of 5953 isolates, 5770 were identified as Listeria spp., from which 3429 (59.

Stray animal populations and public health in the South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions.

Uncontrolled urban growth in South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions involves city dwellers and stray animals (mainly dogs and cats) creating a dense and downgraded environment, in which irregular street garbage collection disposes sufficient food for survival and proliferation of stray animals. Under such conditions serious public health hazards are expected due to the increase of animal bites, the multiplication of insects and rodents vectors of different viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents to which humans are exposed. Traditional national stray animal eradication programs

In vitro response of the striped bass natural resistance-associated macrophage protein, Nramp, to LPS and Mycobacterium marinum exposure.

Mycobacteriosis in Chesapeake Bay (USA) striped bass Morone saxatilis is an ongoing disease problem with important economic implications for a large commercial and recreational fishery. Additionally, striped bass serve as a reservoir of potential mycobacterial zoonoses. Recently, we described a striped bass gene homolog of the natural resistance-associated macrophage protein family (MsNramp), which is responsible for resistance to mycobacterial infections in mice. Striped bass MsNramp is strongly induced in peritoneal exudate cells (PE) in vivo after intraperitoneal injection with Mycobacteriu

Insects represent a link between food animal farms and the urban environment for antibiotic resistance traits.

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections result in higher patient mortality rates, prolonged hospitalizations, and increased health care costs. Extensive use of antibiotics as growth promoters in the animal industry represents great pressure for evolution and selection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria on farms. Despite growing evidence showing that antibiotic use and bacterial resistance in food animals correlate with resistance in human pathogens, the proof for direct transmission of antibiotic resistance is difficult to provide. In this review, we make a case that insects commonly associate

The population structure of Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from animals: an emerging zoonotic threat.

To investigate the population structure of Acinetobacter baumannii in animals and the transmission pattern between humans and animals, we conducted a molecular epidemiological study by supplementing the data from poultry combined with data from 509 animal isolates and 2,218 human isolates in the NCBI GenBank database. Antibiotic susceptibility testing and genomic analysis showed that A. baumannii isolated from the brains of dead poultry embryos was universally sensitive to 19 antibiotics and genetically diverse. The pathogen has been isolated from 33 animal species from 17 countries worldwide.

Whole genome sequencing of Streptococcus suis revealed potential drug resistance and zoonotic transmission in companion cat.

Streptococcus suis is a bacterium of clinical importance in diverse animal hosts including companion animals and humans. Companion animals are closely associated in the living environment of humans and are potential reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens. Given the zoonotic potential of S. suis, it is crucial to determine whether this bacterium is present among the companion animal population. This study aimed to detect Streptococcus suis in companion animals namely cats and dogs of the central west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and further characterize the positive isolates via molecular and genomi

Eurasian griffon vultures carry widespread antimicrobial resistant Salmonella and Campylobacter of public health concern.

The global emergence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) strains of Salmonella and Campylobacter is a serious public health concern. Both bacteria are leading causes of human gastrointestinal foodborne infections and the two most reported zoonoses in the European Union. By feeding on livestock carcasses, especially from intensive farming, as well as on landfill sites, obligate avian scavengers can become infected with zoonotic pathogens and AMR strains, and can be considered large-scale sentinels of the environmental burden. In this study, we assessed the occurrence and AMR of Salmonella spp. and

Emerging zoonoses: crossing the species barrier.

The ability of infectious disease agents to cross the species barrier has long been recognised for many zoonotic diseases. New viral zoonotic diseases, such as acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), caused by human immunodeficiency viruses 1 or 2, emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, and have become established in the human population. Influenza virus continues to find new ways to move from avian species into humans. The filoviruses and the newer paramyxoviruses, Hendra and Nipah, highlight the increasing proclivity of some animal viral agents to infect human populations with devastating resul

Pathogenic micro-organisms in slaughterhouse sludge--a survey.

During slaughtering of animals and subsequent meat processing the process water used becomes polluted with organic matter of animal origin (i.e. protein and fat). This organic sludge is, in principle, a product suitable for animal feeding. To investigate the microbiological contamination level of sludge, raw sludge was collected at pig (n = 8) and poultry (n = 5) slaughterhouses. Both flocculated and aerobically activated sludge was monitored. Slaughterhouse sludge was heavily contaminated with Enterobacteriaceae (6.3-10.0 in log10 N/gram dry matter) and enterococci (4.6-7.9). Clostridia were

2010 ACVIM small animal consensus statement on leptospirosis: diagnosis, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention.

This report offers a consensus opinion on the diagnosis, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention of leptospirosis in dogs, an important zoonosis. Clinical signs of leptospirosis in dogs relate to development of renal disease, hepatic disease, uveitis, and pulmonary hemorrhage. Disease may follow periods of high rainfall, and can occur in dogs roaming in proximity to water sources, farm animals, or wildlife, or dogs residing in suburban environments. Diagnosis is based on acute and convalescent phase antibody titers by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), with or without use of polymerase

Small mammals as carriers of zoonotic bacteria on pig and cattle farms - Prevalence and risk of exposure in an integrative approach.

To prevent foodborne infections from pigs and cattle, the whole food chain must act to minimize the contamination of products, including biosecurity measures which prevent infections via feed and the environment in production farms. Rodents and other small mammals can be reservoirs of and key vectors for transmitting zoonotic bacteria and viruses to farm animals, through direct contact but more often through environmental contamination. In line with One Health concept, we integrated results from a sampling study of small mammals in farm environments and data from a capture-recapture experiment

The Status and Risk Factors of Brucellosis in Smallholder Dairy Cattle in Selected Regions of Tanzania.

Bovine brucellosis is a bacterial zoonoses caused by Brucella abortus. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine brucellosis seroprevalence and risk factors among smallholder dairy cattle across six regions in Tanzania. We sampled 2048 dairy cattle on 1374 farms between July 2019 and October 2020. Sera were tested for the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Seroprevalence was calculated at different administrative scales, and spatial tests were used to detect disease hotspots. A generalized mixed-effects regression model was built

MALDI-TOF MS and genomic analysis can make the difference in the clarification of canine brucellosis outbreaks.

Brucellosis is one of the most common bacterial zoonoses worldwide affecting not only livestock and wildlife but also pets. Canine brucellosis is characterized by reproductive failure in dogs. Human Brucella canis infections are rarely reported but probably underestimated due to insufficient diagnostic surveillance. To improve diagnostics, we investigated dogs in a breeding kennel that showed clinical manifestations of brucellosis and revealed positive blood cultures. As an alternative to the time-consuming and hazardous classical identification procedures, a newly developed species-specific i

Molecular insights into antimicrobial resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains: A potential zoonosis of goat origin.

Antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) strains have attained global attention due to their life-threatening zoonotic nature. Being a member of ESKAPE group, S. aureus has an ability to escape the biocidal action of antimicrobial drugs. The current study investigated the prevalence and molecular characterization of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), β-lactam-resistant S. aureus (BRSA), aminoglycoside-resistant S. aureus (ARSA), tetracycline-resistant S. aureus (TRSA), and fluoroquinolones-resistant S. aureus (FRSA) associated with goat subclinical mastitis (SCM). Seal finger: a literature review.

Seal finger is a rare zoonotic bacterial infection typically caused by Mycoplasma species, transmitted from seals (Pinnipedia suborder) to humans. First documented in 1907, this disease remains under-researched despite growing relevance as humans increasingly encroach on Arctic regions. We conducted a review of multiple databases to evaluate its history, prevalence, at-risk populations, and treatment options. The infection primarily affects individuals who have close contact with marine mammals, including fishers, hunters, sealers, and marine biologists. Seal finger usually presents similarly

'One Health´ approach to end zoonotic TB.

Mycobacterium bovis has a wide host range causing TB in animals, both in wildlife and cattle (bovine TB bTB), and in humans (zoonotic TB zTB). The real burden of bovine and zoonotic TB (b/zTB) remains unknown due to diagnostic challenges. Although progress has been made to reduce the burden of TB, b/zTB has been neglected in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with little improvement in prevention, diagnosis or treatment. Using Tanzania as a case study, because of its high TB burden, large wildlife diversity and wide reliance on livestock, we developed an approach to comprehensively estim

Public health significance of Helicobacter pullorum, a putative food-associated emerging zoonotic pathogen in Iran.

According to the World Health Organization, diseases which are naturally transmissible from vertebrate animals to human beings or from humans to vertebrates are defined as the zoonotic diseases. Among the most common zoonotic pathogens, Helicobacter pullorum has earned public recognition regarding its public health significance. This Enterohepatic Helicobacter species has been shown to be a very dangerous and life-threatening microorganism, accounting for several clinically important infections in the human population. However, despite the several studies indicating the significance of H.pullo
