Beta band oscillations in the motor thalamus are modulated by visuomotor coordination in essential tremor patients.

INTRODUCTION: Beta oscillations in sensorimotor structures contribute to the planning, sequencing, and stopping of movements, functions that are typically associated with the role of the basal ganglia. The presence of beta oscillations (13-30 Hz) in the cerebellar zone of the thalamus (the ventral intermediate nucleus - Vim) indicates that this rhythm may also be involved in cerebellar functions such as motor learning and visuomotor adaptation. METHODS: To investigate the possible role of Vim beta oscillations in visuomotor coordination, we recorded local field potential (LFP) and multiunit a

Auditory cortical delta-entrainment interacts with oscillatory power in multiple fronto-parietal networks.

The timing of slow auditory cortical activity aligns to the rhythmic fluctuations in speech. This entrainment is considered to be a marker of the prosodic and syllabic encoding of speech, and has been shown to correlate with intelligibility. Yet, whether and how auditory cortical entrainment is influenced by the activity in other speech-relevant areas remains unknown. Using source-localized MEG data, we quantified the dependency of auditory entrainment on the state of oscillatory activity in fronto-parietal regions. We found that delta band entrainment interacted with the oscillatory activity

Respiratory medications and the risk of cardiac arrhythmias.

BACKGROUND: Medications used to treat respiratory diseases include beta-adrenoceptors, antimuscarinics, inhaled and oral corticosteroids, and theophyllines. Most of these drugs have been associated indirectly with cardiac rhythm disorders, but epidemiologic evidence is limited. METHODS: To evaluate the association between respiratory drugs and the occurrence of rhythm disorders among patients with asthma and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, we conducted a case-control study nested in a population-based cohort of individuals 10-79 years of age and registered in the U.K. Genera

Clinical EEG of Rett Syndrome: Group Analysis Supplemented with Longitudinal Case Report.

Rett syndrome (RTT), a severe neurodevelopmental disorder caused by MECP2 gene abnormalities, is characterized by atypical EEG activity, and its detailed examination is lacking. We combined the comparison of one-time eyes open EEG resting state activity from 32 girls with RTT and their 41 typically developing peers (age 2-16 years old) with longitudinal following of one girl with RTT to reveal EEG parameters which correspond to the RTT progression. Traditional measures, such as epileptiform abnormalities, generalized background activity, beta activity and the sensorimotor rhythm, were suppleme

Atrial fibrillation (AF) remains the most common sustained arrhythmia, with a growing need for rapid, effective, and patient-centered rhythm control strategies. Inhaled flecainide, a novel formulation of a well-established class individual consideration antiarrhythmic, offers an innovative approach by utilizing the pulmonary route to achieve rapid systemic absorption and therapeutic onset. This review examines the clinical efficacy, safety, and practical implications of inhaled flecainide for the treatment of recent-onset paroxysmal AF. Data from the RESTORE-1 trial and related studies suggest

The effect of ouabain on the isolated sinus node preparation of the rabbit studied with microelectrodes.

In 30 isolated, spontaneously beating right atrial preparations of the rabbit, the arrhythmogenic actions of ouabain were studied with microelectrodes. Ouabain (10(-6) M) uniformly produced the following events: (1) a gradual increase in sinus rate with periods of alternation of beta-to-beat atrial intervals, (2) a rapid rate and regular rhythm, (3) severe irregularity of rhythm, (4) total atrial arrest. Cycle length decreased from 394 msec +/- 43 (mean +/- SD) during control to 229 msec +/- 26 during the period of rapid rate and regular rhythm (P less than 0.001). Pretreatment with atropine o

The pharmacologic treatment of atrial fibrillation.

The pharmacologic treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) is aimed at controlling the ventricular response, restoring sinus rhythm, and preventing or delaying relapses. In the control of ventricular response, digitalis maintains a primary role when the arrhythmia is accompanied by heart failure. In ischemic, hypertensive, and degenerative (whose number is increasing at present) cardiopathies without evident ventricular dilatation, treatments with calcium antagonists (such as verapamil, gallopamil, or diltiazem) or beta-blocking agents must be preferred. In order to control the ventricular respon

Atrial fibrillation and heart failure comorbidity.

Atrial fibrillation and heart failure have in common that they mainly occur in older patients and the patients have similar underlying heart diseases. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in heart failure patients varies from 10% to 30%. There are conflicting data whether the presence of atrial fibrillation is an independent predictor for an increased mortality in heart failure. Optimal medical heart failure therapy can improve outcome and may influence the relationship between atrial fibrillation and survival. Keystones for the management of atrial fibrillation in heart failure patients are

Transcallosal connectivity and cortical rhythms: findings in children with spina bifida.

We studied the relation between cortical oscillatory rhythms and the structural integrity of the corpus callosum in 21 children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Participants underwent resting state neuromagnetic recordings and diffusion tensor imaging. Areas of three segments of the corpus callosum (genu, body, splenium) were derived through diffusion tensor imaging-based morphometrics. Children with spina bifida showed reduced values of spectral power in the theta, alpha and beta bands when compared with age-matched controls, but only in the posterior and temporal regions. Reduced spectra

Meta-analysis of retinal transcriptome profiling studies in animal models of myopia.

OBJECTIVE: Myopia prevalence is increasing at alarming rates, yet the underlying mechanistic causes are not understood. Several studies have employed experimental animal models of myopia and transcriptome profiling to identify genes and pathways contributing to myopia. In this study, we determined the retinal transcriptome changes in response to form deprivation in mouse retinas. We then conducted a transcriptome meta-analysis incorporating all publicly available datasets and analyzed how the results related to the genes associated with refractive errors in human genome-wide association studie

Atrial Fibrillation Modifies the Relationship Between Beta Blocker Dose and Physical Capacity After Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrythmia in post-myocardial infarction (MI) cardiac rehabilitation (CR) cohorts, and beta-adrenergic signaling remodeling and rate-control pharmacotherapy may influence functional capacity. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 117 consecutive male post-MI patients referred to outpatient CR. Functional capacity was assessed with a 6 min walk test (6MWT). AF was identified from clinical records, and beta-blocker exposure was unified as carvedilol-equivalent daily dose. RESULTS: Beta-blockers were used in 94.1% of patients and AF was present in 1

Beta power as a neural correlate of sensory features in autistic individuals.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by social communication difficulties, restricted and repetitive behaviors, and sensory atypicalities. Its pathophysiology remains poorly understood, and no diagnostic biomarker is currently available. However, studies support the hypothesis of an imbalance in the neuronal excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance. Beta and gamma oscillatory powers are described in the literature as indirect electrophysiological features reflecting network dynamics related to this balance. This study takes a dimensional approach to investigate whether altera

Reduced Modulation of Theta and Beta Oscillations Mediates Empathy Impairment in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Empathy is an inaccessible part of advanced social cognitive functions in humans. Impairment of empathy greatly affects the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) but the underlying neurophysiologic mechanisms have not been established. OBJECTIVES: The dynamic process of brain oscillations in PD pain empathy was explored and the mechanism of empathy damage was studied. METHODS: A total of 27 patients with PD and 13 healthy controls were recruited to undergo a pain judgment task, and the event-related potentials were recorded. This study compared the changes in

Movement rate effect on activation and functional coupling of motor cortical areas.

We investigated changes in the activation and functional coupling of bilateral primary sensorimotor (SM1) and supplementary motor (SMA) areas with different movement rates in eight normal volunteers. An auditory-cued repetitive right-thumb movement was performed at rates of 0.5, 0.75, 1, 2, 3, and 4 Hz. As a control condition, subjects listened to pacing tones with no movements. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded from 28 scalp electrodes and electromyogram was obtained from the hand muscles. From Traditional Tasks to Hyperscanning: Exploratory Evidence for Selective Modulation of Sensorimotor Neurodynamics Using Time-Resolved Generalized Additive Model Analysis.

Sensorimotor rhythms in the mu (8-13 Hz) and beta (13-30 Hz) frequency ranges provide a canonical window into action-related neural dynamics. While these rhythms are known to reflect movement preparation, execution, and postmovement regulation, less is known about how their temporal organization varies across increasingly ecological interactional contexts. Here, we used a four-tier scalable experimental design (SED) based on the rock-paper-scissors (RPS) game to examine sensorimotor event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) across contexts ranging from individual computer-based

What If We Let It Fibrillate? New Perspective on Atrial Fibrillation in Sepsis.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a frequent arrhythmia in sepsis patients and is traditionally regarded as a harmful epiphenomenon requiring immediate correction. Its abrupt onset and association with adverse outcomes have driven clinicians to pursue aggressive rhythm or rate control strategies, which are often extrapolated from cardiology rather than sepsis-specific evidence. However, emerging data challenge this reflexive approach. Studies with ultrashort-acting beta-blockers, such as esmolol and landiolol, have shown that hemodynamic stabilization may occur even in the absence of sinus rhythm re
