Alcohol use and binge drinking among US college students by military veteran status: Findings from the Healthy Minds study, 2021-2022.

Objective: We examined current alcohol use and binge drinking among college students, by Veteran status. Participants: Students that completed the 2021-2022 Healthy Minds Study, with complete demographic, alcohol use, and mental health data (n = 78,446). Methods: Weighted logistic regression models examined the relationship between Veteran status and past two-week alcohol use; and among those currently using alcohol, whether Veteran status was associated with any binge drinking. Models controlled for age, gender, race and ethnicity, and mental health conditions. We replicated models within the

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Mitigate Long-Lasting Disruption of the Endocannabinoid System in the Adult Mouse Hippocampus Following Adolescent Binge Drinking.

Adolescent binge drinking has lasting behavioral consequences by disrupting the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and depleting brain omega-3. The natural accumulation of omega-3 fatty acids in cell membranes is crucial for maintaining the membrane structure, supporting interactions with the ECS, and restoring synaptic plasticity and cognition impaired by prenatal ethanol (EtOH) exposure. However, it remains unclear whether omega-3 supplementation can mitigate the long-term effects on the ECS, endocannabinoid-dependent synaptic plasticity, and cognition following adolescent binge drinking. Here, we

The serotonin 2C receptor agonist lorcaserin, alone and in combination with the opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone, attenuates binge-like ethanol drinking.

The serotonin (5-HT) system has been implicated in the pathophysiology of alcohol (ethanol; EtOH) use disorders. Lorcaserin, a 5-HT2C receptor agonist, attenuates drug self-administration in animal models. We investigated the effects of lorcaserin on EtOH intake using the drinking-in-the-dark (DID) procedure, an animal model of binge-like drinking. We compared the effects of lorcaserin to those of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug naltrexone and examined the effects of combining lorcaserin and naltrexone. To examine whether effects were specific for EtOH, we examined the eff

Early Adolescent Binge Drinking Increases Risk of Psychopathology in Post-9/11 Veterans and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Exacerbates Symptom Severity.

AIMS: To demonstrate that early adolescent binge drinking (BD) increases the risk for and/or severity of psychopathology in post-9/11 Veterans and determine if mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) modifies risk. METHODS: Post-9/11 Veterans (n = 375) were classified into two groups: 57 Veterans with a history of early adolescent BD (E-BD; age of onset <15) and 318 who did not BD until age 15 or older (late-BD or L-BD; age of onset ≥15). History of military mTBI and mental health disorders were also assessed following military service. RESULTS: Logistic regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA

Sports- and Physical Activity-Related Concussions, Binge Drinking and Marijuana Use among Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Depression and Suicidal Ideation.

BACKGROUND: Although past studies have examined the adverse impact of sports- and physical activity-related concussions (SPACs) on health and mental health outcomes, there is a dearth of research investigating the association between SPACs and binge drinking and marijuana use. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine the cross-sectional association between SPACs and binge drinking and marijuana use among adolescents and whether symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation mediate this association. METHODS: Data for this study came from the 2017 and 2019 National Youth Risk Behavi

Disruption of blood-brain barrier integrity in postmortem alcoholic brain: preclinical evidence of TLR4 involvement from a binge-like drinking model.

Inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species are reported to be involved in blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption. Because there is evidence that ethanol (EtOH) induces release of free radicals, cytokines and inflammatory mediators we examined BBB integrity and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity in postmortem human alcoholic brain and investigated the role of TLR4 signaling in BBB permeability in TLR4-knockout mice under a binge-like EtOH drinking protocol. Immunohistochemical studies showed reduced immunoreactivity of the basal lamina protein, collagen-IV and of the tight junction p

Salidroside Regulates Inflammatory Response in Raw 264.7 Macrophages via TLR4/TAK1 and Ameliorates Inflammation in Alcohol Binge Drinking-Induced Liver Injury.

The current study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of salidroside (SDS) and the underlying mechanism by using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages in vitro and a mouse model of binge drinking-induced liver injury in vivo. SDS downregulated protein expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and CD14. SDS inhibited LPS-triggered phosphorylation of LPS-activated kinase 1 (TAK1), p38, c-Jun terminal kinase (JNK), and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Degradation of IκB-α and nuclear translocation of nuclear factor (NF)-κB were effectively bloc

Age 18-30 Trajectories of Beverage-Specific Binge Drinking Prevalence Over 30 Years for Men and Women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking contributes to substantial mortality, morbidity, and economic costs in the United States. Although trends in and determinants of overall binge drinking are well characterized, little is known about how binge drinking trends vary by beverage type (beer, wine, liquor) across young adulthood and over historical time. Understanding beverage-specific patterns may clarify shifts in alcohol-related risks and inform beverage-specific policy. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Monitoring the Future longitudinal study, which sampled representative cohorts of US high-school sen

Associations between ZIP code-level alcohol outlet density and binge drinking among people who inject drugs in 22 US metropolitan areas.

BACKGROUND: Although alcohol outlet density (AOD) is associated with drinking behaviors in the general population, little evidence exists about this relationship among people who inject drugs (PWID). Establishing this connection is particularly important, as alcohol use exacerbates the risk of opioid overdose. This study investigated 1) the association between ZIP code-level AOD and binge drinking among PWID who use opioids, and 2) the potential moderating effect of race/ethnicity on the AOD-binge drinking relationship. METHODS: This analysis linked 2018 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (

Genetically modeled GLP1R and GIPR agonism reduce binge drinking and alcohol-associated phenotypes: a multi-ancestry drug-target Mendelian randomization study.

Pharmacological modulation of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) through dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly used for diabetes and obesity, shows promise in reducing alcohol consumption. We applied drug-target Mendelian randomization (MR) using genetic variation at these loci to assess their long-term effects on problematic alcohol use (PAU), binge drinking, alcohol misuse classifications, liver health, and other substance use behaviors. Genetic proxies for lowered BMI, modeling the appetite-suppressing and weight-reducing effects of v

High-intensity ethanol binge drinking pattern in adolescence induces long-lasting impairment in the salivary glands and saliva quality of rats.

This study investigated the effects of high-intense ethanol consumption during abstinence periods on the biochemical and morphological profile of the salivary glands and saliva of rats. For this, 72 male rats, 35 days old, exposed to ethanol (20% w/v) in 4 cycles of binge drinking at a dose of 3 g/kg/day were used. The animals were evaluated 1 day after the last cycle, as well as 30 and 60 days of abstinence. The parotid and submandibular glands were collected for oxidative biochemical and morphological analysis while saliva for antioxidant and total protein analysis. Student's t-test was used

Selenium supplementation via modulation of selenoproteins ameliorates binge drinking-induced oxidative, energetic, metabolic, and endocrine imbalance in adolescent rats' skeletal muscle.

Adolescence is characterized by increased vulnerability to addiction and ethanol (EtOH) toxicity, particularly through binge drinking (BD), a favored acute EtOH-ingestion pattern among teenagers. BD, highly pro-oxidant, induces oxidative stress (OS), affecting skeletal muscle (SKM), where selenium (Se), an antioxidant element and catalytic center of selenoproteins, is stored, among other tissues. Investigating the effects of Se supplementation on SKM after BD exposure holds therapeutic promise. For this, we randomised 32 adolescent Wistar rats into 4 groups, exposed or not to intermittent i.p.

GHSR blockade, but not reduction of peripherally circulating ghrelin via β1-adrenergic receptor antagonism, decreases binge-like alcohol drinking in mice.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and binge drinking are highly prevalent public health issues. The stomach-derived peptide ghrelin, and its receptor, the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR), both of which are expressed in the brain and periphery, are implicated in alcohol-related outcomes. We previously found that systemic and central administration of GHSR antagonists reduced binge-like alcohol drinking, whereas a ghrelin vaccine did not. Thus, we hypothesized that central GHSR drives binge-like alcohol drinking independently of peripheral ghrelin. To investigate this hypothesis, we antagon

Prior experience with flavored alcohol increases preference for flavored alcohol but flavor does not influence binge-like drinking behavior in mice.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking can lead to various negative consequences and in non-experimental settings, alcohol usually contains flavoring, which may promote increased binge drinking. Preclinical models of binge-like drinking have been well established, however, the influence of flavor on alcohol preference and binge-like drinking has not been fully explored. METHODS: Male and female C57BL/6 J mice were tested via two-bottle choice with alcohol flavored with different concentrations of unsweetened Cherry flavor Kool-Aid and water. Next, mice were tested for preference for flavored alcohol over

Trends in binge drinking, marijuana use, illicit drug use, and polysubstance use by sexual identity in the United States (2006-2017).

Background: National studies often examine associations between sexual identity and substance use at a single point in time and neglect to examine whether these associations change over time. The present study examines U.S. trends in the past-year prevalence of binge drinking, marijuana use, illicit drug use, and polysubstance use across sexual identity subgroups (gay, lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual). Methods: The data come from four independent, cross-sectional samples measured by the National Survey of Family Growth (2006-2010, 2011-2013, 2013-2015, and 2015-2017). Based on the consisten

Changes in Representation of Thalamic Projection Neurons within Prefrontal-Thalamic-Hippocampal Circuitry in a Rat Model of Third Trimester Binge Drinking.

Alcohol exposure (AE) during the third trimester of pregnancy-a period known as the brain growth spurt (BGS)-could result in a diagnosis of a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), a hallmark of which is impaired executive functioning (EF). Coordinated activity between prefrontal cortex and hippocampus is necessary for EF and thalamic nucleus reuniens (Re), which is required for prefrontal-hippocampal coordination, is damaged following high-dose AE during the BGS. The current experiment utilized high-dose AE (5.25 g/kg/day) during the BGS (i.e., postnatal days 4-9) of Long-Evans rat pups. AE

Do Maternal Dietary Antioxidants Modify the Relationship Between Binge Drinking and Small for Gestational Age? Findings from a Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids are potent dietary antioxidants that have been shown to attenuate ethanol-induced harm in animal models of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. A diet low in antioxidant-rich foods may induce a state of oxidative stress in the context of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy, potentially causing growth restriction in the developing fetus. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a longitudinal U.K. birth cohort. The sample comprised 9,699 women and their babies in Avon, U.K., with an estimated delivery date between April 1, 1991 and
